The album so far has a score of 67 out of 100 from Metacritic based on "generally favorable reviews". [1] Filter gave it a score of 74% and said that DiFranco "dives into a murkier, less-definable world that is part acoustic neo-soul, part spoken word and dreamier than you might imagine." [1] The A.V. Club gave it a positive review and stated that it "benefits from DiFranco's emphasis on spare shimmer, though it also perpetuates her recent tendency to let her songs languidly drift along, for better and for worse." [10] The New York Times also gave it a positive review and stated that "It's worth putting up with a few overbearing moments to hear someone so willing to take chances." [11] Billboard likewise gave the album a positive review and said it was "Characterized by production rawness—for better (the immediacy of the performance) and worse (traces of off-key harmonies)." [12]
Other reviews were average, mixed, or negative: Q gave it three stars out of five and said of DiFranco, "The jazzy stylings are a mixed blessing... [but] her fans will not be disappointed." [1] Rolling Stone gave the album only two stars out of five and stated that the "awkward, improbable tendency goes unchecked, as does DiFranco's penchant for jarring arrangements." [7] E! Online gave it a D and called the album "so staccato and nonlinear, a sort of free-jazz version of rock with just too much going on and little worth hearing." [1]
The album reached No. 55 on the Australian ARIA albums chart in January 2004, and spent five weeks in the top 100. [13]

Ophelia is the second studio album by the American singer-songwriter Natalie Merchant, released on May 19, 1998, by Elektra Records. The album was supported by the singles "Kind & Generous" and "Break Your Heart", with the former being the most successful single of the album, reaching the top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay Chart. "Break Your Heart" also received single and video treatment. These and the other videos from the album, plus three from Tigerlily, were gathered on a Warner Music Vision home video, also entitled Ophelia. "I love the opportunity to flex my thespian muscle," Merchant quips on it. The album became Merchant's only top ten hit on the Billboard 200, where it peaked at number eight.

It was released in November 26, 2002 by Curb Records and was recorded on a mountaintop studio in upstate New York. Four singles were released. Two songs were in the movie Black Cloud, starring McGraw. The album also included a cover of Elton John's "Tiny Dancer", which was released only to the AC format, although it also reached the country charts from unsolicited airplay. The album debuted at number 2 on the Billboard 200 with first week sales of 602,000 copies.

"Water" was released on June 9, 2009, followed by the title track on June 16 and "Everybody's Here" on June 23. The second radio single is "Welcome to the Future." The title track was released as the third single on November 16, 2009. As of the chart dated January 8, 2011, the album has sold 714,812 copies in the US.
