Eight Bears Island is an island of the Arctic Archipelago, specifically of the Parry Islands subgroup of the Queen Elizabeth Islands. The island belongs to the Northwest Territories, Canada. It lies just east of Fitzwilliam Owen Island, south-west of the Ballantyne Strait. It is roughly halfway between Mackenzie King Island (to the north-east) and Emerald Isle (to the south-west).
Eight Bears Island was discovered on June 24th, 1915 by Vilhjalmur Stefansson as part of the Canadian Arctic Expedition, 1913–1916. [1] Eight Bears Island was named by Hubert Wilkins in honor of Edwin Willard Deming and his family, who were known as the "eight bears". During a journey he made from Svalbard to Nome, Alaska, Deming and his family continued to send him letters even after he had been assumed for dead. [2]
