Elizabeth Steiner (born April 5,1963),also known as Elizabeth Steiner Hayward,is a Democratic member of the Oregon Senate,representing the 17th district. [1] Steiner was appointed to the Senate in 2011 by commissioners from Multnomah and Washington counties following the resignation of her predecessor,Suzanne Bonamici. [2]
On November 5,2024,Steiner defeated state senator Brian Boquist in the 2024 Oregon State Treasurer election,becoming the first woman to be elected treasurer. [3]
Steiner is an adjunct associate professor of family medicine at Oregon Health &Science University (OHSU). She is a past president of the Oregon Academy of Family Physicians. [4]
In November 2018,Steiner was appointed to co-chair the Oregon legislature's joint ways and means committee,serving with senator Betsy Johnson. [5] She remained in the role until 2024,when she stepped down to focus on her run for state treasurer. [6]
On September 13,2023,Steiner announced her candidacy for state treasurer in the 2024 election. [7] On May 21,2024,Steiner won the Democratic primary with 77% of the vote. [8] On November 5,2024,Steiner defeated Republican state senator Brian Boquist in the general election,becoming the first woman to be elected to the position. [3]
In 2013,Steiner publicly revealed she suffers from major depressive disorder and multiple sclerosis. [9]
Steiner lives in Northwest Portland and has three adult children. [10]

The Oregon State Senate is the upper house of the statewide legislature for the US state of Oregon. Along with the lower chamber Oregon House of Representatives it makes up the Oregon Legislative Assembly. There are 30 members of the state Senate,representing 30 districts across the state,each with a population of 141,242. The state Senate meets in the east wing of the Oregon State Capitol in Salem.

Oregon Ballot Measure 113,the Exclusion from Re-election for Legislative Absenteeism Initiative,was approved by Oregon voters in the 2022 Oregon elections. Measure 113 amended the Constitution of Oregon to provided that members of the Oregon Legislature with ten unexcused absences from floor sessions are disqualified from serving in the legislature following their current term. It is codified as Article IV,Section 15 of the Oregon Constitution.
The 2024 Oregon Secretary of State election was held on November 5,2024,to elect the Oregon secretary of state,the highest office in the state after the governor. Incumbent Democrat LaVonne Griffin-Valade was appointed by Governor Tina Kotek to replace Shemia Fagan,who resigned in May 2023 after revelations that she took a consulting job at a cannabis company while her office was auditing Oregon's marijuana industry,which many considered to be a conflict of interest. Griffin-Valade did not seek election to a full term.
The 2024 Oregon State Treasurer election was held on November 5,2024,to elect the Oregon state treasurer. Incumbent Democratic state treasurer Tobias Read is term-limited and cannot seek re-election to a third term in office;he is instead running for Secretary of State.
