The Embassy of the United States in Port Louis is the diplomatic mission of the United States of America in Mauritius. Mauritius is among the principal beneficiaries of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) and stands as a key ally of the United States in combating maritime piracy in the Indian Ocean. [1] The bilateral ties between the two nations encompass Diego Garcia, an island subject to territorial disputes and the location of a United States naval base. [2]
The U.S. Ambassador to Mauritius previously also held concurrent accreditation as the Ambassador to Seychelles, which changed with the re-opening of the embassy in Victoria, Seychelles. [3]
The United States recognized Mauritius on March 12, 1968, coinciding with Mauritius's independence from the United Kingdom. The first diplomatic representative from the United States to Mauritius was William B. Hussey, who served as Chargé d'Affaires ad interim. [4]
