History

The United States maintained a Consulate in Brunei from 1865 to 1868, with Consul Captain C. Lees Moses presenting his credentials on July 18, 1865. [1]

The historical relationship was momentarily affected when Brunei became a British protectorate in 1888, and the United Kingdom assumed responsibility for Bruneian foreign affairs. Official diplomatic relations did not resume until Brunei regained full independence in 1984. [1] [2]

Upon Brunei's independence from the United Kingdom on January 1, 1984, the United States promptly recognized Brunei Darussalam's sovereignty and established an American Embassy in Bandar Seri Begawan on May 28, 1984. The first U.S. Ambassador to Brunei, Barrington King, presented his credentials to the Bruneian government shortly thereafter. [1]

Brunei and the United States signed a military and defense cooperation memorandum of understanding in 1994. This agreement resulted in the continuation of joint military exercises, training programs and other forms of military cooperation between the two countries. Brunei pulled out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership in 2017 due to the country's involvement in the China-dominated Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership. In August 2022, the two nations conducted an exercise focused on enhancing partner land force capacity. [3]
