Europrop International (EPI) GmbH is a consortium set up in 2002 [2] in the form of a company governed by German law, by the four main European aircraft engine manufacturers, MTU Aero Engines, Safran Aircraft Engines, Rolls-Royce and Industria de Turbo Propulsores. [3] [4] [5]

EPI GmbH is tasked with designing, developing, marketing, manufacturing and providing support for the TP400-D6 turboprop engine designed to power the Airbus A400M Military Transport built by Airbus Defence and Space. [6] [4] [5] [2]

The TP400 is the most powerful turboprop in the world currently in production. [7] [8]

Pooling the expertise of each engine manufacturer, Europrop International GmbH brings together around 2,500 people across Europe who are invested in the TP400-D6 program. [1] Based in Munich, the Europrop International teams also operate out of Madrid, Seville and Berlin. The final assembly of the TP400-D6 engine is carried out in Munich before being delivered to Airbus Defence and Space in Seville.

History

Europrop GmbH was established in 2002. [2] One year after its inception, EPI GmbH with the TP400 was selected by Airbus Military to design the engine that was to power the A400M military Airbus. [9] In 2004, work began on analyzing the engine design, with the initial ground tests taking place a year later. The first engine run with propeller took place in 2006, with the first flight of the TP400 aboard a testbed taking place in 2008.

The first flight of the A400M took place in 2009. [10] Two years later the TP400 engine received EASA certification. [11] The first engines were delivered in 2012. The French Air Force began using the A400M in 2013. [4] The following year, the engine was delivered to a further three countries: Turkey, the United Kingdom [12] and Germany. [13] The year 2015 marked the first delivery to the Royal Malaysian Air Force, the first export customer for the A400M and TP400, and in 2016, the first delivery was made to the Spanish Air Force.

In 2017, EPI GmbH signed a support contract with the Royal Malaysian Air Force, which was extended in 2019.

Airbus A400M Atlas Multi-national four-engine turboprop military transport aircraft

The Airbus A400M Atlas is a European four-engine turboprop military transport aircraft. It was designed by Airbus Military as a tactical airlifter with strategic capabilities to replace older transport aircraft, such as the Transall C-160 and the Lockheed C-130 Hercules. The A400M is positioned, in terms of size, between the C-130 and the Boeing C-17; it can carry heavier loads than the C-130 and is able to use rough landing strips. Along with the transport role, the A400M can perform aerial refueling and medical evacuation when fitted with appropriate equipment.

Rolls-Royce Holdings British multinational public holding company

Rolls-Royce Holdings plc is a British multinational engineering company incorporated in February 2011 that owns Rolls-Royce, a business established in 1904 which today designs, manufactures and distributes power systems for aviation and other industries. Rolls-Royce is the world's second-largest maker of aircraft engines and has major businesses in the marine propulsion and energy sectors.

Propfan Engine with the speed and performance of a turbofan, but with the efficiency of a turboprop

A propfan, also called an open rotor engine, or unducted fan, is a type of aircraft engine related in concept to both the turboprop and turbofan, but distinct from both. The design is intended to offer the speed and performance of a turbofan, with the fuel economy of a turboprop. A propfan is typically designed with a large number of short, highly twisted blades, similar to a turbofan's bypass compressor. For this reason, the propfan has been variously described as an "unducted fan" or an "ultra-high-bypass (UHB) turbofan."

Safran Helicopter Engines aircraft engine manufacturer in France

Aircraft diesel engine

The aircraft diesel engine or aero diesel is a diesel-powered aircraft engine. They were used in airships and tried in aircraft in the late 1920s and 1930s, but never widely adopted beyond this. Their main advantages are their excellent specific fuel consumption, the reduced flammability and somewhat higher density of their fuel, but these have been outweighed by a combination of inherent disadvantages compared to gasoline-fueled or turboprop engines. The ever-rising cost of avgas and doubts about its future availability have spurred a resurgence in aircraft diesel engine production in the early 2010s.

The Pratt & Whitney PW1000G is a high-bypass geared turbofan engine family, currently selected as the exclusive engine for the Airbus A220, Mitsubishi SpaceJet, and Embraer's second generation E-Jets, and as an option on the Irkut MC-21 and Airbus A320neo. The project was previously known as the Geared Turbofan (GTF), and originally the Advanced Technology Fan Integrator (ATFI). The engine is expected to deliver reductions in fuel use and ground noise when used in next-generation aircraft. The PW1000G engine first entered commercial use in January 2016 with Lufthansa's first commercial Airbus A320neo flight.
