FC Shakhter Karagandy is an Kazakh football club based in Karaganda. Shakhter first qualified for European football at the end of the 2005 season, where they finished in 5th position and were Kazakhstan's representative in the 2006 UEFA Intertoto Cup.

History

2000's

On 10 April 2006, UEFA announced the draw for the 2006 UEFA Intertoto Cup, drawing Shakhter in to the Central/East 1st Round draw where they would play the Belarussian entrant, MTZ-RIPO Minsk. [1]

2010's

During their 2013 season, Shakhter entered the UEFA Champions League at the Second qualifying round stage after winning the League the previous season. After defeating BATE Borisov and then Skënderbeu Korçë, Shakhter were drawing against Celtic. Shakhter won the first leg, played at the Astana Arena, 2-0 thanks to goals from Andrei Finonchenko and Sergey Khizhnichenko. [2] [3] Following the game, Shakhter were warned by UEFA after they had sacrificed a sheep at the stadium before the game against Celtic. [4] Celtic then went on to win the second leg of the tie 3–0 at Celtic Park to progress to the group stages of the Champions League, [5] whilst Shakhter dropped down in to the group stage of the UEFA Europa League were they would finish bottom on two points.

No clubs participated in continental competitions during the 2001–02 season, as the Football Federation of Kazakhstan finalised their switch to become the 52nd member of UEFA. Kazakhstani clubs have played in UEFA competitions since the 2002–03 season. Zhenis in the 2007–08 UEFA Champions League, were the first club to advance in a European tournament. Tobol reached the second qualifying round of the UEFA Cup by winning three rounds of the Intertoto Cup in 2007. Shakhter were the first team to reach group stage of any competition in 2013, qualifying to UEFA Europa League after being defeated in UEFA Champions League play-off round. Astana became the first ever Kazakhstani team to reach UEFA Champions League group stage in 2015, passing three rounds of qualification and play-offs. Astana also became the first ever Kazakhstani team to qualify for knockout stage of any European competition in 2017, by finishing runner-up in 2017–18 UEFA Europa League group stage. In 2021 Kairat became the first ever Kazakhstani club to compete in the group stage of inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League.

The 2011–12 UEFA Europa League was the third season of the UEFA Europa League, Europe's secondary club football tournament organised by UEFA, and the 41st edition overall including its predecessor, the UEFA Cup. It began on 30 June 2011 with the first legs of the first qualifying round, and ended on 9 May 2012 with the final held at Arena Națională in Bucharest, Romania. As part of a trial that started in the 2009–10 UEFA Europa League, two extra officials – one on each goal line – were used in all matches of the competition from the group stage.

This was both teams second appearance in the Kazakhstan Super Cup.

The 2018 FC Kaisar season is the club's second season back in the Kazakhstan Premier League, the highest tier of association football in Kazakhstan, and 21st in total. Kaisar will also participate in the Kazakhstan Cup.

The 2019 FC Shakhter Karagandy season was the 29th successive season that the club will play in the Kazakhstan Premier League, the highest tier of association football in Kazakhstan. Shakhter finished the season in 9th position whilst they were knocked out of the Kazakhstan Cup at the last 16 stage by FC Taraz.

The 2020 FC Shakhter Karagandy season was the 30th successive season that the club played in the Kazakhstan Premier League, the highest tier of association football in Kazakhstan. Shakhter Karagandy finished the season in 4th position and as a result qualified for the 2021–22 UEFA Europa Conference League.

Solomon Ime Udo is a professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Pyunik. Born in Nigeria, he plays for the Armenia national team.

The 2022 Kazakhstan Cup was the 30th season of the Kazakhstan Cup, the annual nationwide football cup competition of Kazakhstan since the independence of the country. The winners qualified for the 2023–24 UEFA Europa Conference League second qualifying round. FC Kairat were the defending champions, having beaten FC Shakhter Karagandy in the previous final.
