The FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 1987 were held in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, from 27 January to 8 February 1987. [1]
The alpine world championships included Super-G for the first time; [2] it was first run on the World Cup level four seasons earlier, in December 1982.
The host Swiss team won eight gold medals out of ten, including all five women's events.

Super giant slalom, or super-G, is a racing discipline of alpine skiing. Along with the faster downhill, it is regarded as a "speed" event, in contrast to the technical events giant slalom and slalom. It debuted as an official World Cup event during the 1983 season and was added to the official schedule of the World Championships in 1987 and the Winter Olympics in 1988.
Jan Ingemar Stenmark is a Swedish former World Cup alpine ski racer. He is regarded as one of the most prominent Swedish athletes ever, and as the greatest slalom and giant slalom specialist of all time. He competed for Tärna IK Fjällvinden.
Wallace Jerold "Buddy" Werner was an American alpine ski racer in the 1950s and early 1960s.
Debra Rae "Debbie" Armstrong is a former World Cup alpine ski racer from Seattle, Washington. She was the first Olympic gold medalist from the U.S. in women's alpine skiing in twelve years, winning the giant slalom at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia.
The FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 1978 were held in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bavaria, West Germany, between 29 January and 5 February. It held competitions in alpine skiing like downhill, special slalom, giant slalom and combined. The combined was only a "paper race".
The FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 1989 were held February 2–12 in the United States at Vail, Colorado. Outside of the Winter Olympics of 1960 and 1980, the alpine world championships returned to the U.S. for the first time since 1950, which were also in Colorado at Aspen. Vail's first championship served to re-introduce Colorado to a European audience, with coverage of the events broadcast during prime time due to the difference in time zones. The championship was marked by the death of the president of the Spanish Olympic Committee Alfonso, Duke of Anjou and Cádiz, who was beheaded by a cable which he collided with as it was being raised to support a finish line banner.
