Fact (stylized in all caps) is a Japanese post-hardcore band, formed in December 1999 in Ibaraki Prefecture.

The members have hidden their faces during every video since 2009 wearing traditional Japanese Noh masks during the time they supported their second album, Fact (2009), but abandoned the imagery in videos the next year[ clarification needed ] in favor of either partially or fully concealing their faces.

They were signed to Maximum10, an indie-rock imprint of the Avex Group until they disbanded in 2015. The band reformed in October 2024.

History

The band was formed from members of other bands in the Tokyo area. They then began to tour the local music scene in and around Chiba, Mito and Tokyo. Originally, Tomohiro played bass and sang with support from Kazuki and Takahiro but, in 2002, main vocal duties as well as a third guitar were added when Hironobu joined. Hironobu had been a member of the band Second Base along with Kazuki before either of them joined Fact. [1]

Continuing onward as a group, the band traveled to the United States, specifically California for a short tour in 2003.

In 2006, they released their first full-length album Never Turn Out the Light to Keep Myself on Japan's Bullion Records (a sublabel of Wave Master). [2]

The band later signed a record deal sometime between 2008 and 2009 with Vagrant Records to release Fact, their worldwide début album. A single from the album, "A Fact of Life", was released with an accompanying video in early 2009. In support of the album, the band toured the U.S. accompanying American bands, including A Skylit Drive, Greeley Estates, Iwrestledabearonce, Memphis May Fire and Senses Fail. Their tour was abruptly cut short after a car collision early on, injuring drummer Eiji, but another U.S. tour was rescheduled soon after.

Their third full-length album, In the Blink of an Eye , was released on 13 January 2010, and its first single, "Slip of the Lip" was released online with an accompanying music video. The album débuted at number six on the Japanese Oricon weekly charts, becoming their first album to reach the top ten. [3]

The band returned[ clarification needed ] to the UK in support of In The Blink of an Eye for a second tour of the country between 24 May and 4 June 2010, with a headlining show at London's O2 Academy Islington and then playing as the support act for the American electronic-rock duo Breathe Carolina during the rest of the dates. [4]

Their single "A Fact of Life" was featured in Konami's rhythm music game Jubeat .

In 2011, they released the singles "Attack Me If You Dare", "Error" and "The Shadow of Envy", all of which were later featured in their extended-play album Eat Your Words.

On 11 January 2012, the band released their fourth album, Burundanga , which features their newest member, Adam (from the United Kingdom), on guitar.[ citation needed ]

On 27 January 2014 the band released a new single titled Disclosure. [5] The song is the first single off fifth record titled, Witness, available in Japan on 5 March 2014 and worldwide shortly after. [5] Over a year later, Fact released their sixth and final album, KTHEAT, in 2015, before announcing their disbandment just two months later. [6] They held their farewell set at ROCK-O-RAMA 2015 in Shibuya, featuring performances from 18 bands, including Crossfaith, Crystal Lake, HEY-SMITH, Ken Yokoyama, LITE, and MAN WITH A MISSION. [7]

Following the disbandment, members Hironobu Onose, Kazuki Sakurai, and Takahiro Onose formed a new melodic hardcore band called SHADOWS, while Adam Graham, Eiji Matsumoto, and Tomohiro Takayasu, along with former The Amity Affliction guitarist Imran Siddiqi, established Joy Opposites. [8]

In 2024, Bring Me the Horizon used Fact’s sound as a reference on their track "Top 10 staTues tHat CriEd bloOd" from the album POST HUMAN: NeX GEn. Paledusk guitarist DAIDAI, who co-wrote the track, introduced BMTH frontman Oli Sykes to Fact’s 2009 album during the songwriting process. [9] [10]

In October 2024, Fact announced a reunion performance at ‘REDLINE ALL THE FINAL’ in Chiba. [11] Suzuki Kentaro, the event’s organiser, shared on social media that securing Fact’s participation required two years of discussions with the band members. [12]

Musical style

Fact has typically been described as post-hardcore. However, with the release of their second album, their style seemed to follow elements of melodic hardcore much more than the precursor. They often incorporate elements of metalcore and mathcore, with latter especially appearing after the release of their third album In the Blink of an Eye. Their fourth record saw an incorporation of much more electronic elements. On their fifth and sixth records, Witness and KTHEAT, they approached their sound from a more traditional hardcore punk perspective. Most of their compositions consist of melodic lead vocals accompanied by gang vocals, rhythmically complex guitar riffs, technical drumming with emphasis on double bass, changing time signatures, and fast upbeat tempos ranging from 180 to 220 bpm.

Schwein is a music group comprising members of Buck-Tick, KMFDM, and Pig. Members Raymond Watts and Hisashi Imai, both having worked together in Schaft, were joined by Atsushi Sakurai, Sascha Konietzko and Lucia Cifarelli. In 2001 Schwein released an album, Schweinstein, which peaked at number 18 on Oricon's album chart, followed by the remix album Son of Schweinstein. Schwein toured Japan in the summer of 2001. However, Konietzko did not tour with them, citing illness and a desire to focus on KMFDM. In a 2023 interview with Visual Music Japan, Raymond Watts talked about the project and cited Schwein as his favorite collaboration to date and called Sakurai a "grand vocalist".

Buck-Tick is a Japanese rock band formed in Fujioka, Gunma in 1983. The group consisted of lead vocalist Atsushi Sakurai, lead guitarist Hisashi Imai, rhythm guitarist Hidehiko Hoshino, bassist Yutaka Higuchi and drummer Toll Yagami from 1985 until Sakurai's death in 2023. The band has experimented with many different genres of music throughout their four decade career, including punk rock, gothic rock and industrial rock. Buck-Tick are commonly credited as one of the main founders of the visual kei movement.

Crazy Ken Band (クレイジーケンバンド), also referred to as CKB, is a Japanese musical group formed in 1997 by its lead vocalist, writer and composer Ken Yokoyama. The band first came together in 1991 under the name "CK's", with a four-member lineup: Ken Yokoyama, Keiichi Hiroishi, Masao Onose and Shinya Horaguchi. This incarnation of the group was centred on a 15-man instrumental and vocal group. In 1997, Keiichi Nakanishi became the fifth member and the group's name was changed to "Crazy Ken Band".

Set the World on Fire is the third studio album by Canadian heavy metal band Annihilator, released on May 4, 1993 by Roadrunner and Epic Records. Raphael was a Japanese visual kei rock band formed in March 1997, when the members were only 15. They quickly achieved popularity, headlining the Nippon Budokan and reaching the top 20 on the Oricon charts, but disbanded in January 2001, after guitarist Kazuki died at age 19. The remaining three members reunited Raphael for two concerts in 2012 and for a 2016 tour.

Bow Wow are a Japanese rock band formed in 1975. Originally consisting of guitarist and vocalists Kyoji Yamamoto and Mitsuhiro Saito, bassist Kenji Sano and drummer Toshihiro Niimi, they were one of the first Japanese metal bands. After releasing nine studio albums, Saito left in 1983. The band then adopted a mainstream sound by recruiting lead vocalist Genki Hitomi and keyboardist Rei Atsumi and renamed themselves to Vow Wow. They relocated to England in 1986, before Sano left the band the following year and Yamamoto invited former Whitesnake bassist Neil Murray to replace him. After Murray left to join Black Sabbath, studio bassist Mark Gould played on Vow Wow's last album before they disbanded in 1990.

Darker Than Darkness: Style 93 is the seventh studio album by the Japanese rock band Buck-Tick. It was released on June 23, 1993, through Victor Entertainment. The album peaked at number two on the Oricon chart, became a certified gold seller by July 1993, and subsequently sold 213,260 copies. Darker Than Darkness: Style 93 was digitally remastered and re-released on September 19, 2002, with two bonus tracks. It was remastered and re-released again on September 5, 2007. "Dress" was remixed and used as the opening theme for the anime Trinity Blood (2005), this version was also released as a single. The album was named one of the top albums from 1989 to 1998 in a 2004 issue of the music magazine Band Yarouze.

Cosmos is the ninth studio album by the Japanese rock band Buck-Tick. The album was released on June 21, 1996, through Victor Entertainment. It was the group's last album released through Victor and peaked at number six on the Oricon charts. Cosmos has sold 130,000 copies within two weeks. The album was digitally remastered and re-released on September 19, 2002, with two bonus tracks. It was remastered and re-released again on September 5, 2007. The song "Tight Rope" was later re-recorded as the b-side to the group's "Alice in Wonder Underground" single in 2007, and "Sane" was re-recorded in 2012 for their "Elise no Tame ni" single. The album was heavily influenced by electronic music, as the band started gravitating towards cyberpunk music.

Ai no Wakusei is the only solo album released by Japanese singer Atsushi Sakurai, lead vocalist of the rock band Buck-Tick. It was released by Victor Entertainment on June 23, 2004. In addition to providing lead vocals, Sakurai wrote the lyrics to every song, while the music was composed and performed by many different collaborators. Contributors include, Wayne Hussey, Robin Guthrie, Yasuyuki Okamura, and Theatre Brook frontman Taiji Sato. Three singles were released to promote the album. Ai no Wakusei reached number 15 on the Oricon Albums Chart, and charted for four weeks.

Tenshi no Revolver is the fifteenth studio album by Japanese rock band Buck-Tick, released by BMG Japan on September 19, 2007. The group deliberately focused on melody and adopted a straight rock "band sound" for the album. Preceded by the singles "Rendezvous" and "Alice in Wonder Underground", Tenshi no Revolver reached number five on the Oricon Albums Chart. All of the tracks on the compilation were re-recorded and contain different musical arrangements, because of this some argue that it is a studio or remix album. The album was digitally remastered and re-released on September 19, 2002, with a bonus track. It was remastered and re-released again on September 5, 2007. PMtoday was a progressive post-hardcore band from Jacksonville, Arkansas, formerly signed to Rise Records. They released two EPs as well as two full-length albums, And Then the Hurricane in 2007 and In Medias Res in 2010. The band consisted of brothers Connor, Ryan, and Cuinn Brogan, as well as Jerrod Morgan.

Galileo Galilei (ガリレオ・ガリレイ) is a Japanese indie rock band from Wakkanai, Hokkaido who debuted in 2008 after winning the teenage audition festival “Senkou Riot”. In 2009, The band signed with SME Records and released their debut song “Hanamasu no Hana” the next year which marked over 1 million downloads. Their debut studio album, Parade was released in 2011 which reached the top 5 on the Oricon weekly chart, followed by their second studio album Portal in 2012.
