William Lee Stoddart (1868–1940) was an architect who designed urban hotels in the Eastern United States. Although he was born in Tenafly, New Jersey, most of his commissions were in the South. He maintained offices in Atlanta and New York City.
Burroughs School, also known as Burroughs Graded School, is a historic school located at Conway in Horry County, South Carolina. It was built in three phases between 1905 and 1923. The earliest portion of the building was built as an elementary school and has three main portions of eleven bays. It features a one-story, hip roof porch supported by six Ionic order columns with Scamozzi capitals. About 1915 a two-story hipped classroom wing was added and in 1923 four classrooms and an auditorium was added to the complex.
Ocean Forest Country Club, previously known as Ocean Forest Hotel and Country Club, and called Pine Lakes Country Club since 1946, is a historic country club and hotel located at Myrtle Beach in Horry County, South Carolina. The club and hotel were designed by an influential New York architect, Raymond Hood (1881-1934) and is an unusual example of Classical Revival architecture. Construction of the club began in 1926 and was completed in 1927. In addition to the hotel / club building, a 27-hole golf course was built in association with the club. It was designed by Robert White, a golf course designer and future president of the Professional Golfers' Association of America. The present 18-hole course dates to 1946.
Myrtle Heights–Oak Park Historic District is a national historic district located at Myrtle Beach in Horry County, South Carolina. It encompasses 89 contributing buildings and one contributing site. They relate to the period of residential development in Myrtle Beach following the financial collapse of Woodside Brothers, the company that developed the Ocean Forest Hotel and Country Club in the late 1920s. The Myrtle Heights section was opened in 1933 and the Oak Park Section was opened in 1935. The majority of these oceanside residences were built between about 1925 and 1945 and are two-story frame buildings, many of them with one- or two-story attached garages, two-story detached garage apartments, or one-story attached servants’ quarters. They reflect a variety of popular architectural styles, the most prevalent being Colonial Revival. Also represented are the Classical Revival, Tudor Revival, and Bungalow/Craftsman styles.
The W New York Union Square is a 270-room, 21-story boutique hotel operated by W Hotels at the northeast corner of Park Avenue South and 17th Street, across from Union Square in Manhattan, New York. Originally known as the Germania Life Insurance Company Building, it was designed by Albert D'Oench and Joseph W. Yost and built in 1911 in the Beaux-Arts style.
Hotel Albert Commercial Block, also known as the Shoppes at the Albert House, is a historic hotel building located at Walterboro, Colleton County, South Carolina. The complex was built in 1912, and consists of four two-story brick structures. It was operated as a hotel until 1960, after which it housed apartments and various commercial enterprises. They buildings were restored in 1995.
Arcade Hotel is a historic hotel located at Hartsville, Darlington County, South Carolina. It was built in 1913, and is a three-story, brick, L-plan building with a one-story rear wing. The front facade features a rusticated first floor, and an entrance portico with two paneled brick pillars.
Hotel Keturah is a historic hotel building located at McCormick in McCormick County, South Carolina. It was built about 1910, and is a 2 1/2-story, brick building with a hipped roof in the Colonial Revival style. The front façade features a one-story frame porch with Doric order Tuscan columns.
Orangeburg County Fair Main Exhibit Building is a historic county fair exhibition hall and grandstand located at Orangeburg, Orangeburg County, South Carolina. It was built in 1911, and is a one-story, rectangular, frame building. It sits on an open, brick pier foundation and has shiplap siding and a low-pitched gable roof.
Fair-Rutherford and Rutherford Houses, refers to a set of two historic homes located at Columbia, South Carolina. The Fair-Rutherford House was built about 1850, and underwent three alterations during the following century. It was demolished in 2004. The two-story Rutherford House was built in 1924–25. They are associated with they prominent African American Rutherford family of Columbia. The Rutherford House presently serves as an office for Palmetto Dental Services. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.
Hotel Oregon, also known as Oakman Drugs, Oakman Glass, and Spartan Hotel, is a historic hotel building located at Spartanburg, Spartanburg County, South Carolina. It was built in 1909, and is a three-story, brick building with two first floor storefronts. It features horizontal granite belt courses, decorative brick panels, brick cornices, and a stepped front parapet.
Main Street Grammar School, also known as Union High School, is a historic school building located at Union, Union County, South Carolina. It was built in 1909 and is a two-story, brick Neo-Classical building. It features a brick parapet, central projecting bay and large pedimented portico. In 1965, the Union Campus of the University of South Carolina acquired the building and rehabilitated it to serve as its main campus building.
Union Downtown Historic District is a national historic district located at Union, Union County, South Carolina. The district encompasses 48 contributing buildings in the central business district of Union. The commercial, public, residential, industrial, and transportation-related buildings were built between about 1878 to about 1940, with the majority dating from about 1880 to about 1930. The district includes buildings representative of the Neo-Classical and Victorian styles. Notable buildings include the Union County Courthouse, Union Post Office/Federal Building, Flynn Building, Krass Building, People's State Bank/Arthur State Bank, Union Depot, Union Cotton Oil Mill, and Union Hardware Co. Located in the district is the separately listed Fair Forest Hotel.
Imperial Hotel, currently known as Greenville Summit, is a historic hotel building located at Greenville, South Carolina. It was built in 1911–1912, and is a seven-story, U-shaped skyscraper with a buff-colored brick veneer over a steel frame. It was originally a 90-room hotel, and expanded by 1930 to 250 rooms. The hotel closed in the early 1970s, but this establishment is still used as a nursing home for low income and disabled people 55 and over. An adjacent parking garage was demolished in the 1980s.
Alamance Hotel is a historic hotel located at Burlington, Alamance County, North Carolina. It was designed by architect Charles C. Hartmann and built in 1924. It is a seven-story, brick sheathed building in the Classical Revival style. It features terra cotta ornamentation, a brick parapet, and stuccoed panels at the uppermost floor.
Graylyn Estate, or Graylin, is a historic estate located in Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, North Carolina. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The construction of the Norman Revival style mansion began in 1928. Associated with the house are a number of contributing outbuildings including a garage-guest house and "farm" complex. Today, Graylyn estate is used as a conference center and hotel. It is currently a member of Historic Hotels of America, the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
LaSalle Hotel is a historic hotel building located at South Bend, St. Joseph County, Indiana. It was built in 1921, and originally housed 223 hotel rooms. It is a nine-story, Commercial style brick building with terra cotta trim and a wide overhanging cornice. It is located next to the Hoffman Hotel and across the street from where the Chicago South Shore and South Bend Railroad's original South Bend station were once located. A tunnel connected the station and the hotel.
