Fallon is a Roanoke, Virginia neighborhood located in southeast Roanoke. It borders the neighborhoods of Hollins on the north, Kenwood to the south and Belmont on the west. The eastern and part of the northern border is shared with the town of Vinton. [1] Today the neighborhood is bisected by Virginia State Route 24 (Dale Avenue) and is bordered by Tinker Creek to the east.

Hollins is a Roanoke, Virginia neighborhood located in eastern Roanoke, immediately to the west of Tinker Creek. It borders the neighborhoods of Preston Park and Williamson Road on the west, Monterey, Eastgate and Wildwood on the east across Tinker Creek, and Fallon on the south. Its public education is at Northside High School. The extreme southeast corner of the neighborhood also is bounded by the town of Vinton. This neighborhood should not to be confused with the Census Designated Place called Hollins in Roanoke County.

History

Originally established as a neighborhood serving workers of the neighboring Roanoke Shops, the majority of the development in Fallon dates from between the 1890s and 1950s. [2] The Southeast Action Forum serves as the citizen advocacy group for the neighborhood, and today Fallon is both the location of Fallon Park and the Fallon Park Elementary School. [2]

The Roanoke Shops is a Norfolk Southern workshop and maintenance facility in Roanoke, Virginia. Between 1884 and 1953, the shops produced 447 steam locomotives, all for the Norfolk and Western (N&W). The Roanoke Locomotive Shops famous known steam locomotives preserved were Norfolk and Western 611, a N&W Class J 4-8-4 "Northern" built in 1950, Norfolk and Western 1218, an articulated N&W Class A 2-6-6-4 built in 1943, and Norfolk and Western 2156, an articulated Class Y6A 2-8-8-2 built in 1942.
