Find a Way to Care received a score of 70 out of 100 on review aggregator Metacritic based on five critics' reviews, indicating "generally favorable" reception. [1] Uncut found there to be "no surprises" and wrote that it is "no classic, but a warm and well-produced set", [6] while Mojo commented that "there's a synergy and rapport in the set's dozen tracks that reveals how deeply the new band has gelled with Mayall". [4] Record Collector 's Michael Heatley described it as "another excellent studio album of all-new material" that "the addition of a horn section" to "gives this album a different feel to its rootsier predecessor, while Mayall himself features more prominently on keyboards – a feature of the live shows". [5]
David West of Classic Rock called Mayall's voice "a little rougher, a little thinner" but "crucially, Mayall still knows how to sell a song and he's backed by his regular band – guitarist Rocky Athas, bassist Greg Rzab and drummer Jay Davenport – who understand where to push forwards to fill the gaps and when to sit back". [3] AllMusic's Thom Jurek opined that it is "a Mayall album that—uncharacteristically—focuses on his keyboard skills" and one that demonstrates that his "voice is beginning to show its age (on the slow tunes in particular), but he can still sing and shout clearly. Find a Way to Care doesn't break new ground, but it is exploratory." [2]

The idea for The Optimist originated from the cover artwork of the album A Fine Day to Exit (2001). The coordinates from the first track are pointing to Silver Strand beach in San Diego County, the location that is shown on the cover of A Fine Day to Exit. The Optimist won "Album of the Year" at the 2017 Progressive Music Awards. It is the final album featuring bassist Jamie Cavanagh before he left the band a second time in 2018. Things Happen That Way is the final studio album by American musician Dr. John. It was released on September 23, 2022, through Rounder Records, making it his only posthumous release after he passed away of a heart attack on June 6, 2019 at the age of 77. Recording sessions took place at Esplanade Studios and at The Music Shed in New Orleans, at Dirty Power Studios and at Chateau Oblivion. Production was handled by Shane Theriot and Dr. John himself, except for the song "I Walk on Guilded Splinters", which was produced with Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real. It features guest appearances from Aaron Neville, Lukas Nelson and Willie Nelson.
