Flying Wild Alaska is a documentary television series that aired on Discovery Channel in 2011 and 2012.

Contents

The show features the Tweto family from Unalakleet, Alaska who run the Alaska airline Era Alaska. They operate the hub operations from Unalakleet. The show also features other segments from their bases in Utqiagvik (Barrow), Deadhorse, and other places. [1]

Death of Jim Tweto

On June 16, 2023 Jim Tweto was killed in a plane crash near Shaktoolik, along with passenger Shane Reynolds, a hunting and fishing guide. [17] The cause of the crash is still under investigation, the NTSB preliminary report stated that the plane impacted a tree during takeoff, however no conclusion about the final cause has yet been published. [18]

Star Air Service, later Star Air Lines and Alaska Star Airlines was an American air service in Alaska from 1932 to 1944. With financial help from a wealthy Alaska miner, three pilots who had started a flying school and charter business in Seattle, shipped an open-cockpit biplane by steamship to Alaska in March 1932. Star Air Service was incorporated in April, 1932 in Anchorage with capitalization of $4,000. The company had some early success training student pilots, but their airplane was destroyed in a crash. Their financial backer helped them purchase a larger plane with an enclosed cabin which supported winter operations.

Offering primarily cargo services, Ryan Air also operates scheduled passenger service out of Aniak, and passenger or cargo charters throughout Alaska.

On April 27, 2012, a multinational team of television studios staged an airplane crash near Mexicali, Mexico. An unmanned Boeing 727-200, fitted with numerous cameras, crash test dummies and other scientific instruments, was flown into the ground. The exercise was filmed for television.

Ice Airport Alaska is a TV series on the Smithsonian Channel about Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport. A 6 episode first season premiered on November 15, 2020. On December 12, 2021, a second season was announced with a premiere date of January 9, 2022.
