Frank Effenberger is an American electrical engineer. He is currently Vice President and Fellow of Fixed Access Networks at FutureWei Technologies. [1]

Effenberger completed his undergraduate studies in 1988 at Stevens Institute of Technology, where he majored in engineering and engineering physics. He completed a master's degree at University of Rochester's Institute of Optics. [2] He earned a PhD from the University of Central Florida College of Optics and Photonics. His doctoral thesis was titled Signal and noise in sprite detectors. [3] After graduating, he studied passive optical networks (PONs) at Bellcore. In 2000, he served as director of systems engineering at Quantum Bridge Technologies (later Motorola). [1] He became director of FTTX at Huawei in 2006. [4] In 2011, Effenberger and colleagues published a paper describing the world's first field trial of XG-PON. [5]

Since 2009, Effenberger has served as a rapporteur for Q2/15 (WP1/15) on optical systems for fibre access networks in Study Group 15 on optical transport networks and access network infrastructures of the International Telecommunication Union. [6] [7] [8] He chairs the IEEE 802.3cp task force. [1]

Effenberger was elected as a Fellow of the Optical Society (OSA) in 2015. [9] That year, he was additionally named a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) [10] for contributions to passive optical networking standards and technology. He was also honored by the UCF Alumni Association with their Professional Achievement Award. [2]

Anthony Michael Johnson is an American experimental physicist, a professor of physics, and a professor of computer science and electrical engineering at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). He is the Director of the Center for Advanced Studies in Photonics Research (CASPR), also situated on campus at UMBC. Since his election to the 2002 term as president of the Optical Society, formerly the Optical Society of America, Johnson has the distinction of being the first and only African-American president to date. Johnson's research interests include the ultrafast photophysics and nonlinear optical properties of bulk, nanostructured, and quantum well semiconductor structures, ultrashort pulse propagation in fibers and high-speed lightwave systems. His research has helped to better understand processes that occur in ultrafast time frames of 1 quadrillionth of a second. Ultrashort pulses of light have been used to address technical and logistical challenges in medicine, telecommunications, homeland security, and have many other applications that enhance contemporary life.

Gisele Bennett was a professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology and the Director of the GTRI Electro-Optical Systems Laboratory at the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI). She also founded the Logistics and Maintenance Applied Research Center (LandMARC) at GTRI.

10G-PON is a 2010 computer networking standard for data links, capable of delivering shared Internet access rates up to 10 Gbit/s over existing dark fiber. This is the ITU-T's next generation standard following on from GPON or Gigabit-capable PON. Optical fibre is shared by many subscribers in a network known as FTTx in a way that centralises most of the telecommunications equipment, often displacing copper phone lines that connect premises to the phone exchange. Passive optical network (PON) architecture has become a cost-effective way to meet performance demands in access networks, and sometimes also in large optical local networks for "Fibre-to-the-desk".

Higher Speed PON is a family of ITU-T recommendations for data links, capable of delivering shared Internet access rates up to 50 Gbit/s. Higher Speed PON is the first PON system to use digital signal processing, succeeding both single-channel XGS-PON and multi-channel NG-PON2. It provides upgrade paths for legacy PON generations such as GPON, XG-PON, XGS-PON, and 10G-EPON.
