Gendarmerie Nationale Basketball Club, commonly known as GNBC, is a Malagasy basketball club based in Antsirabe, Vakinankaratra. [1] The team plays in the Malagasy N1A and played in the inaugural season of the Basketball Africa League (BAL). Established in 2012, the team has won its national championship three times.

History

The public sports institution GNBC was established in 2012. [2] In September 2019, GNBC grabbed the N1A title after edging COSPN in the final. [3] As national champions, GNBC played in the first round of the qualifying tournament of the Basketball Africa League (BAL). [4] In the first round, the team finished second in its group and advanced to the second round. [5] On 21 December 2019, GNBC qualified for the inaugural BAL season, after surprisingly beating Ferroviário Maputo in the semi-finals.

In the inaugural season of the BAL, GNBC played in Group A and lost all three games to Patriots BBC, Rivers Hoopers and US Monastir.

GNBC waited four more years until it next national title, which came on 30 October 2023, following a 89-71 win over ASCUT in the final. The team was led by final MVP Elly Randriamampionona, who scored 43 points and had 17 rebounds in the final. [6]

The 2021 BAL season, also known as BAL Season 1, was the inaugural season of the Basketball Africa League (BAL). Established as a joint effort between the National Basketball Association (NBA) and FIBA, the BAL is the highest tier continental league of Africa, replacing the FIBA Africa Basketball League. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the BAL held its inaugural season one year later as planned, with the season beginning in 2021. The 2022 BAL season, also known as BAL Season 2, was the second season of the Basketball Africa League (BAL). The season began on 2 March 2022 and ended with the Finals on 28 May 2022. The group phase was played in the Dakar Arena in Dakar and the Hassan Moustafa Sports Hall in Cairo. The playoffs and finals were played in the BK Arena in Kigali for a second year in a row.

Kiady Mijoro Razanamahenina is a Malagasy basketball player who plays for Lyonso. Standing at 1.84 m, he plays as point guard. Razanamahenina also plays for the Madagascar national team.

Elly Randriamampionona is a Malagasy basketball player for COSPN on loan from GNBC and for Madagascar. Standing at 1.88 m, he plays as shooting guard. Randriamampionona is a three-time champion of the N1A, the highest level league in Madagascar.

Association Sportive et Culturelle de Boeny, better known as ASCB Boeny, is a Malagasy basketball club based in Mahajanga (Boeny). The team plays in the Malagasy N1A, the national highest level league. The club joined the N1A in 2017, and won the national championship the same year.

The 2021 BAL Finals was the championship game of the inaugural season of the Basketball Africa League (BAL). The final was played in the Kigali Arena in Kigali on 30 May 2021. The game was played between Egyptian club Zamalek and Tunisian club US Monastir.
