General elections were held in Ghana on 7 December 1996. The presidential election resulted in a victory for the incumbent, Jerry Rawlings of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), whilst the NDC won 133 of the 200 seats in Parliament. [1]

Jerry John Rawlings is a former Ghanaian military leader and politician who ruled the country from 1981 to 2001 and also for a brief period in 1979. He led a military junta until 1992 and then served two terms as the democratically elected President of Ghana.

National Democratic Congress (Ghana) political party in Ghana

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is a social democratic political party in Ghana, founded by Jerry Rawlings, who was Head of State of Ghana from 1981 to 1993 and the President of Ghana from 1993 to 2001. Following the formation of the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) which ruled Ghana following the military coup d'état on 31 December 1981, there was pressure from the international community to restore democracy. The NDC was formed as the ruling party ahead of elections in 1992, in which Rawlings was elected president, and in 1996 Rawlings as re-elected as the NDC candidate. Rawlings' second term ended in 2001. The NDC lost the presidency in the 2000 election, and it was not until the 2008 election that they regained it with candidate John Atta Mills.

New Patriotic Party political party in Ghana

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is a centre-right and liberal conservative party in Ghana. Since the democratization of Ghana in 1992, it has been one of the two dominant parties in Ghana politics; its leading rival being the centre-left National Democratic Congress (NDC). John Kufuor of the NPP was President of Ghana from 2001 to 2009. At the elections held on 7 December 2004, the party won 129 out of 230 seats. Democratic Peoples Party (Ghana) political party in Ghana

The Democratic People's Party is a Ghanaian political party formed in 1992 after the ban on political party activity was lifted by the Provisional National Defence Council government of Ghana. The party claims to follow the Nkrumahist tradition along with the People's National Convention (PNC), Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP), National Reform Party (NRP) and the Convention People's Party (CPP).

Nii Okaidja Adamafio is a Ghanaian former politician. He was the Minister of the Interior in the Rawlings government from 1997 to 2001. He was the first Member of Parliament from 1992 to 1997 in the Odododiodoo constituency.

Alhaji Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka is the Member of Parliament for Asawase in the Ashanti Region of Ghana and also the Minority Chiep in Ghana's Parliament. He was the Minister for Youth and Sports in the Ghana government. He was requested by President Mills to proceed on leave while allegations of corruption against him were investigated. He however resigned from government following the acceptance by President Mills of the findings of the investigating committee.
