Glendive Depot is an office building and former train station in Glendive, Montana. The Northern Pacific Railway established the town in 1881 and opened the first depot in 1882. The present depot building was built in 1922 and is part of the Merrill Avenue Historic District.
Passenger rail service to Glendive ended in 1979 when budget cuts forced Amtrak to discontinue the North Coast Hiawatha . As of 2022 [update] , the depot remains in use as a regional office for the BNSF Railway, while rail advocates continue to call for the restoration of train service.
Extending west from Bismarck, North Dakota, the main line of the Northern Pacific Railway (NP) reached the Yellowstone River in 1881. The town of Glendive was built at this junction, and consequently it became the headquarters of the railroad's Yellowstone Division. [1]
The first depot was a single-story wood-frame structure built in 1882. A second story was later added to house the offices of the Yellowstone Division. While the building became overcrowded and in need of replacement by the 1910s, World War I delayed any action. The wooden depot eventually burned down and the railroad moved into temporary offices elsewhere in the city. [1]
On December 20, 1922, the Northern Pacific inaugurated the new Glendive Depot. The three-story "fire-proof" brick and concrete building was designed by NP staff architect O. M. Rognan and constructed by the Winston-Grant Company, with George Ready as project superintendent and R. A. Shellgren as construction engineer. The occasion was celebrated with an elaborate fruitcake in the shape of the new depot decorated by Fred Kaul, master baker of the Northern Pacific's dining car services. [1]
In 1970 the Northern Pacific merged with the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, Great Northern Railway, and Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway, forming the Burlington Northern Railroad. In 1996 the Burlington Northern Railroad was merged into the BNSF Railway, which remains the owner of the depot as of 2022 [update] .
In 1988 the depot was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a primary contributing property to the Merrill Avenue Historic District. [2]
The first passenger train timetable to include Glendive was issued in June 1882. [1] In August 1883 the Northern Pacific completed its transcontinental line at a site near Gold Creek.
In 1900 the Northern Pacific launched the North Coast Limited , an express train between Chicago and both Seattle and Portland that stopped at Glendive Depot. The Alaskan ran over the same route but on a slower schedule, making more stops. In 1952 the Alaskan was replaced by the Mainstreeter . [3]
Amtrak took over most inter-city passenger rail in the United States on May 1, 1971, including the Burlington Northern routes. The North Coast Limited and Mainstreeter were discontinued. Glendive was left with no train service until pressure led by Senator Mike Mansfield resulted in Amtrak launching the North Coast Hiawatha in June. Though Amtrak now handled passenger rail through Glendive, Burlington Northern retained ownership of the depot and continued using the office space.
In October 1979 Amtrak discontinued the North Coast Hiawatha due to budget cuts, severing Glendive and all of southern Montana from the national rail network. This left the Empire Builder as the only passenger rail service in the state, running on the former Great Northern Railway line.
In 2020 a group of Montana counties formed the Big Sky Passenger Rail Authority with the goal of restoring service in southern Montana through Glendive. [4] In 2021 the authority played a role in securing language in the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act requiring USDOT to study restoration of the North Coast Hiawatha. The study must be completed by 2023. [5]
When built in 1922, the depot building was said to have been "modern" and "without superfluous frills." [1] It has been categorize under the Prairie School style. [2] The exterior is red brick with white brick trim, both pressed by the Hebron Brick Company of North Dakota. The ground floor was intended as a passenger station while the top two floors were built as company offices. There is a portico on the north side that was used to store carts for baggage and mail. [1]
Amenities included a waiting room, ticket room, smoking room, lunch room, and baggage room. The interior featured Ludowic red promenade tile flooring and oak woodwork. The public restrooms were finished in glazed white tile and Tennessee marble. [1]
The station had three brick platforms lined with twenty-six electric lamp posts. One platform was 380 feet (120 m) long while the other two measured 1,000 feet (300 m). [1] These have since been removed.
The Empire Builder is a daily long-distance passenger train operated by Amtrak between Chicago and either Seattle or Portland via two sections west of Spokane. Introduced in 1929, it was the flagship passenger train of the Great Northern Railway and was retained by Amtrak when it took over intercity rail service in 1971.

The North Coast Limited was a named passenger train operated by the Northern Pacific Railway between Chicago and Seattle via Bismarck, North Dakota. It started on April 29, 1900, and continued as a Burlington Northern Railroad train after the merger on March 2, 1970 with Great Northern Railway and the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad. The next year, it ceased operations after the trains which left their originating stations on April 30, 1971, the day before Amtrak began service, arrived at their destinations.
The North Coast Hiawatha was a streamlined long-distance passenger train operated by Amtrak between Chicago, Illinois, and Seattle, Washington.
The Olympian and its successor the Olympian Hiawatha were passenger trains operated by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad between Chicago and the Pacific Northwest. The Olympian operated from 1911 to 1947 and was, along with its running mate the Columbian, the first all-steel train to operate in the Pacific Northwest. The streamlined Olympian Hiawatha operated from 1947 to 1961 and was one of several Milwaukee Road trains to carry the name "Hiawatha". The Olympian Hiawatha was designed by industrial designer Brooks Stevens and included the distinctive glassed-in "Skytop" observation-sleeping cars. It later featured full-length "Super Dome" cars.
Billings station is a historic train depot in the Historic District of downtown Billings, Montana, United States. The depot was constructed to serve as a passenger station for the Northern Pacific Railway, Great Northern and Chicago, Burlington and Quincy. All three railroad merged to form the Burlington Northern Railroad in 1970, along with the Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway. In 1971 Amtrak took over passenger service throughout the country.
Whitefish station is a stop on Amtrak's Empire Builder in Whitefish, Montana. In addition to the Empire Builder, a once-daily Greyhound Lines bus service also links the station to Kalispell and Missoula. A car rental agency operates a window within the station. The station and parking lot are owned by the Stumptown Historical Society. BNSF Railway leases office space on the upper floors of the station and owns the platform and track.

Fargo Station is a train station in Fargo, North Dakota, United States. It is served by Amtrak's Empire Builder. It is the only railway station in use in the Fargo-Moorhead area and is the third-busiest in North Dakota. The platform, tracks, and station are currently all owned by BNSF Railway. The station is currently located in the former BNSF freight house. The former main station building is now home to Great Northern Bicycle Co.

Osceola is the closest Amtrak station to Des Moines, Iowa's capital and most populous city, which is about 50 miles (80 km) to the north. Livingston Depot is a former train station in Livingston, Montana, built by the Northern Pacific Railway in 1902. The station last saw passenger rail service in 1979 when Amtrak discontinued the North Coast Hiawatha. Since 1987 the restored building has anchored Livingston's downtown historic district as the Livingston Depot Center.
The Minneapolis Great Northern Depot, also known as Great Northern Station, was a passenger railroad station which served Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. It was built in 1913 and demolished in 1978. It was located on Hennepin Avenue next to the Hennepin Avenue Bridge and across the street from the main Minneapolis Post Office.
The Bismarck station in Bismarck, North Dakota was built in 1900 by the Northern Pacific Railway. It is in Mission/Spanish Revival style and was designed by architects Reed & Stem. It "is notable for its Spanish mission-style architecture, a familiar mode in the Southwest and California but uncommon in the northern plains." After the Northern Pacific Railway and then Burlington Northern Railroad discontinued passenger service, Amtrak's North Coast Hiawatha used the station from 1971 until it was discontinued in 1979.
The Missoula station in Missoula, Montana, was built by the Northern Pacific Railway in 1901. The current structure is the third depot built in Missoula by the Northern Pacific, which reached Missoula in 1883. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985, as the Northern Pacific Railroad Depot.

Gardiner station was a railway station in Gardiner, Montana, serving the Northern Pacific Railway. Gardiner was on the southern terminus of a branch line from Livingston and is at the northern border of Yellowstone National Park. Passengers would be shuttled to/from the park via stagecoach. The station was designed by Robert Reamer in the rustic style. Passenger service eventually diminished from Gardiner, and the station was torn down in 1954.

Bozeman Depot is a former train station in Bozeman, Montana, opened in 1883 by the Northern Pacific Railway. The current brick station house was built in 1892 and expanded in 1924.
