Goolamhussein Essaji Vahanvati was an Indian senior counsel who served as the 13th Attorney General for India. [1] His first term in office began in June 2009 and was for three years. [2] [3]
Goolam was born to Essaji Vahanvati,a lawyer, [3]
He started his practice at Bombay High Court and was a junior to Fali S Nariman and later under Soli Sorabjee,Ashok Desai and Ashok Sen. [3] In March 1990,he was designated as a senior advocate. In December 1999,he was appointed as the Advocate General of Maharashtra which he served till June 2004 till he was elevated as the Solicitor General of India, [3] where he handled various important cases,including the Enron cases and the stock market scam.
He appeared in the nine-judge bench hearing on the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution of India,Kuldip Nayar's challenge to the amendment to the Representation of the People's Act with regard to the Rajya Sabha,the tainted Ministers case,in all matters pertaining to the sealing and the challenge to the Delhi Laws Special Provisions Act,2007 and challenges to the Master Plan 2021. [4] He represented Maharashtra state in the public interest litigation petition filed in the fake stamp paper scam. [5] He successfully defended the challenge to the reservation for OBCs in higher education. He appeared as amicus curiae in the MP Local Area Development Scheme and for Union of India/CBI in the matter relating to power of court to suo motu transfer investigation to the CBI without prior consent of the State government concerned. The International Cricket Council appointed him to hold an inquiry into the allegations of racism in Zimbabwe along with High Court Judge Steven Majied in September 2004. He was appointed Single Member Commission to inquire into allegations of racial abuse on South African cricketers during the South African tour of Australia in December 2005. [3]
In 2012 his term as Attorney General of India was extended by two years. [6]
In April 2013,Vahanvati's role in government came under scrutiny after allegations of impropriety and coercion emerged from his junior law officer,Harin P. Raval,who resigned from the post of Additional Solicitor General as a result. [7]
In January 2014,Government of India,along with others,his name was forwarded in the category of "eminent jurist" to the Lokpal selection panel. [8]
He died on 2 September 2014 in Mumbai due to cardiac arrest. [9] [10] On 11 September 2014,a full court reference,a commemorative event involving all judges of the court and lawyers,including the senior officer of the bar was held in the Chief Justice of India's court. [11]
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is the premier investigating agency of India. Operating under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Personnel,Public Grievances and Pensions,Government of India. Originally set up to investigate bribery and governmental corruption,in 1965 it received expanded jurisdiction to investigate breaches of central laws enforceable by the Government of India,multi-state organised crime,multi-agency or international cases. The agency has been known to investigate several economic crimes,special crimes,cases of corruption and other cases. CBI is exempted from the provisions of the Right to Information Act. CBI is India's officially designated single point of contact for liaison with the Interpol.
The Attorney General for India is the Indian government's chief legal advisor,and is its principal Advocate before the Supreme Court of India. They are appointed by the President of India on the advice of the Union Cabinet under Article 76(1) of the Constitution and hold office during the pleasure of the President. They must be a person qualified to be appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court. Hence,they must have been a judge of some high court for five years or an advocate of some high court for ten years,or an eminent jurist in the opinion of the President.

In 2015,he made several allegations against the party's leadership,its functioning and its deviation from the core ideology,values and commitments. He is one of the founders of Swaraj Abhiyan and Sambhaavnaa,an Institute of Public Policy and Politics.
Ashok H. Desai was an Indian lawyer,practising in the Supreme Court of India. He held office as the Attorney General of India from 9 July 1996 to 6 May 1998. Earlier,he was the Solicitor General of India from 18 December 1989 to 2 December 1990. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan award and the Law Luminary Award in 2001. He was given an honorary doctorate in "recognition of his contribution to the field of law and jurisprudence" by the North Orissa University in September 2009.
A Lokpal is an anti-corruption authority or body of ombudsman who represents the public interest in the Republic of India. The current Chairperson of Lokpal is Pinaki Chandra Ghose. The Lokpal has jurisdiction over central government to inquire into allegations of corruption against its public functionaries and for matters connected to corruption. The Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act was passed in 2013 with amendments in parliament,following the Jan Lokpal movement led by Anna Hazare in 2011. The Lokpal is responsible for enquiring into corruption charges at the national level while the Lokayukta performs the same function at the state level. The age of Lokpal on the date of assuming office as the chairperson or a member should not be less than 45 years.

The 2G Spectrum Case is an ongoing alleged scam case in which politicians and private officials of the United Progressive Alliance coalition government in India are accused of selling or allotting 122 2G spectrum licenses on conditions that provided benefit to specific telecom operators,A. Raja is being accused of selling 2G spectrum licenses at a very low cost which resulted in the loss of ₹176,000 crore. Raja is also being accused of not following rules and regulations and also not recognizing any advice from the Ministries of Finance and Law and Justice of India while allotting 2G spectrum licenses to telecom operators. Series of allegations are made on allotting 2G spectrum licenses including allegations from Central Bureau of Investigation after investigating the case alleging Raja for intentionally advancing the cut-off date to favour some specific firms,which were also ineligible for applying for telecom licenses,in return for bribes.
The Jan Lokpal Bill,also referred to as the Citizen's Ombudsman Bill,was a bill drawn up by civil society activists in India seeking the appointment of a Jan Lokpal,an independent body to investigate corruption cases and complete the investigation within a year for envisaging trial in the case getting completed within one year.
The Coal allocation scam is a major political scandal concerning the Indian government's allocation of the nation's coal deposits to public sector enterprise (PSEs) and private companies. In a draft report issued in March 2012,the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) office accused the Government of India of allocating coal blocks in an inefficient manner during the period 2004–2009. Kirit Raval was an Indian attorney who served as the Solicitor General of India from 2002 until 2004. Raval served as an Additional Solicitor General of India from 1998 to 2002,when he succeeded Harish Salve as the Solicitor General. He,in turn,was succeeded by G. E. Vahanvati beginning in 2004. He was the first Solicitor General of India to hail from the state of Gujarat. He studied management at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad. He died of cancer on April 26,2005.

Jadhav has been the judge in a number of notable cases concerning criminal offences,including the death of Sheena Bora,the Adarsh Housing Society scam,the trial of Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt in relation to the 1993 Bombay bombings,the case concerning the suicide of medical resident Payal Tadvi,and the case concerning the murder of writer Govind Pansare. Jadhav is also responsible for several legally significant interpretations of criminal law and procedure,concerning the right to appeal,and regarding penalties under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Act 1989.
