Swansea is a coastal city and county, officially known as the City and County of Swansea in Wales. Swansea lies within the historic county boundaries of Glamorgan and the ancient Welsh commote of Gŵyr on the southwest coast. The county area includes Swansea Bay and the Gower Peninsula. Swansea is the second largest city in Wales and the twenty-fifth largest city in the United Kingdom. According to its local council, the City and County of Swansea had a population of 241,300 in 2014, the second most populous local authority area in Wales after Cardiff. Together with Neath and Port Talbot, Swansea formed a wider Urban Area of 300,352 in 2011.

It was a small village until the late 19th century when it grew around the coal mining and tinplate industries. It is situated in the north west of Swansea City Centre, around 6 miles (10 km) north west of the city centre. Gorseinon is a local government community with an elected town council.

Prior to local government re-organisation in 1996, the town of Gorseinon was administered as part of the Lliw Valley district. Since 1996, Gorseinon has been governed by the City and County of Swansea council.

Lliw Valley

The Borough of Lliw Valley was one of the four local government districts of West Glamorgan, Wales from 1974 to 1996. It was formed by the merger of the Llwchwr urban district and Pontardawe Rural District, under the Local Government Act 1972.

The ward is bounded by Penyrheol to the north west, Penllergaer to the east and Kingsbridge to the south.

It lies some 9 km west-north-west of Swansea city centre and is bounded by the communities of Gorseinon to the north, Penllergaer to the east, and Gowerton to the south, as well as by the estuary of the River Loughor to the west, on the far side of which lies Bynea in Carmarthenshire, connected to Llwchwr by road and rail bridges.
