Guntur Kaaram is the soundtrack to the 2024 film of the same name, composed by Thaman S, with the soundtrack consisting of six songs written by Ramajogayya Sastry, Gongura, and Trivikram. Five of the songs were released as singles before the soundtrack's official release through the Aditya Music on 26 January 2024.

Contents

Background

In August 2021, the producers revealed the film's prelimnary cast and crew with Thaman being confirmed to be the music director. [1] The film marked Thaman's fifth collaboration with Babu after Dookudu (2011), Businessman (2012), Aagadu (2014), and Sarkaru Vaari Paata (2022); third collaboration with Trivikram after Aravinda Sametha Veera Raghava (2018) and Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo (2020). [2] Compositions for the film's music began in June 2022. [3]

Production

"Dum Masala" is the first song from the album which was performed by Sanjith Hegde, with additional vocals by Jyoti Nooran. The song is the introductory number for Ramana, that sings praises of his glory and charm. [4] The second track "Oh My Baby" is a romantic number sung by Shilpa Rao. [5]

"Kurchi Madathapetti" is the third song from the album; [6] a dance number picturized on the lead pair, it was earlier reported to be an item number, contrary to Trivikram's earlier films where the director refrained the use of item numbers, [7] [8] before revealed to be a dance number. [9] [10] Performed by Sri Krishna and Sahiti Chaganti, the song also featured Poorna in a special appearance as Ramola. "Kurchi Madathapetti" is based on the viral catchphrase "Aa kurchini madathapetti" (transl. breaking that chair) by Kala Pasha who was referred to as "Kurchi Thatha" after the viral dialogue. [11] This was sampled in the song. [12]

The fourth song "Mawaa Enthaina" is a dance number picturized on Ramana, which was performed by Krishna, Komanduri Ramachari and Rahul Sipligunj. [13] The song was performed at the film's pre-release event held on 9 January 2024. [14] The fifth song "Ramana Aei" was showcased on a fight sequence. [15] The song is performed by Gotte Kanakavva. [16] The sixth song "Amma Song" is a montage number performed by Vishal Mishra. [17]

Release

"Dum Masala" was released as the first single from the album on 7 November 2023, coinciding Trivikram's birthday. [18] [19] The second single "Oh My Baby" was released on 13 December 2023. [20] [21] The third single "Kurchi Madathapetti" was released on the occasion of New Year's Eve (31 December 2023). [22] The fourth single "Mawaa Enthaina" was released on 10 January 2024. [13] Post the film's release, the fifth song "Ramana Aei" was released as a single on 16 January, [15] and the sixth song "Amma Song" was released along with the soundtrack on 26 January 2024. [23]

In late-January, Thaman announced that apart from the six songs, an additional seventh song is set to be released with a promotional lyric video by the following month. [24]

Reception

Sangeetha Devi Dundoo of The Hindu wrote "Thaman's score livens up things occasionally." [26] Anandu Suresh of The Indian Express described the songs being a "delight" and the background score, "while powerful, seems somewhat disconnected from the visuals and narrative, particularly in the more intense moments". [27] Paul Nicodemus of The Times of India described that Thaman's music "mirrors the film's inconsistency". [28] Swaroop Kodur of The Federal was more critical of the music as excluding the title track, the music "fails to strike the chord" and felt that Thaman "misses the mark this time around". [29] Film Companion -based critic Ram Venkat Srikar and Firstpost -based Priyanka Sundar criticised the background score being "flat" and "did not even gain miniscule attention". [30] [31]

Controversy

With speculations regarding the replacement of the film's crew arising during production, Thaman was reported to be ousted from the film with Babu being disappointed with the former's music, after a series of tweets posted on X (formerly Twitter) from the composer. [32] [33] Anirudh Ravichander and Hesham Abdul Wahab were intended to replace him as the composer. [34] [35] However, the production team confirmed that Thaman is still on board for the film. [36]

The song "Oh My Baby" was criticised for its lyrics post release. [37] Ramajogayya Sastry, the song's lyricist, posted a series of tweets replying the trolls online and eventually deactivated his X account as a result of the backlash. [38]

Khaleja (transl. Courage) is a 2010 Indian Telugu-language action comedy film written and directed by Trivikram Srinivas. The film stars Mahesh Babu, Anushka and Prakash Raj, while Shafi, Sunil, Sameer Hasan, Amit Tiwari, Subbaraju, Tanikella Bharani, Brahmanandam and Ali play supporting roles. The plot follows Raju, a cab driver who gets hailed as God in a remote village and ends up facing GK, a powerful industrialist, to save the village. The film deals with illegal-mining in India, and related environmental damage. It marks Babu's return as an actor after a three-year hiatus in his second collaboration with Trivikram after Athadu.

P. S. Vinod is Indian cinematographer who works in Telugu and Hindi films. He debuted as an independent cinematographer with the 2000 Tamil film Rhythm and then went to work for several Hindi and Telugu projects.

<i>Businessman</i> (film) 2012 film directed by Puri Jagannadh

Businessman is a 2012 Indian Telugu-language action crime film directed and written by Puri Jagannadh and produced by R. R. Venkat under the banner R. R. Movie Makers. It is based from a concept by Ram Gopal Varma and stars an ensemble cast featuring Mahesh Babu, Kajal Aggarwal, Prakash Raj, Nassar, Sayaji Shinde, Raza Murad, Subbaraju and Brahmaji. In the film, Vijay Surya arrives at Mumbai with aspirations to rule the city due to his grudge against the corrupt system in the country, but begins to face violent challenges from the cops and his enemies. The film was remade in Bengali as Boss in 2013.

Mahesh Babu is an Indian actor, producer, media personality, and philanthropist who works in Telugu cinema. He is one of the highest-paid actors in Indian cinema. He first appeared in the 1979 film Needa when he was four years old. He continued to perform as a child actor in several films, most of which featured his father Krishna. Following his role as the titular protagonist in Balachandrudu (1990) while still a child, his career went on hiatus so he could concentrate on his education until taking on his first lead role as an adult in the 1999 film Rajakumarudu, for which he won the Nandi Award for Best Male Debut. Spyder is a 2017 Indian psychological action thriller film written and directed by A. R. Murugadoss and produced by N. V. Prasad. The film was simultaneously shot in Telugu and Tamil languages, and stars Mahesh Babu, S. J. Suryah and Rakul Preet Singh in the lead roles. Murugadoss wrote the Tamil dialogue while the Paruchuri Brothers wrote the Telugu version. The film was edited by A. Sreekar Prasad, with cinematography by Santosh Sivan and music by Harris Jayaraj.

It was produced by Allu Aravind and S. Radha Krishna under their banners Geetha Arts and Haarika & Hassine Creations, respectively. The film starring Mahesh Babu was directed by Srinu Vaitla. The six-song album was released by Aditya Music on 19 August 2011. The album was met with mixed response from critics, but fetched Thaman his maiden Filmfare Award for Best Music Director – Telugu.

"Kurchi Madathapetti" is an Indian Telugu-language song composed by Thaman S, with lyrics by Ramajogayya Sastry, and recorded by Sahiti Chaganti and Sri Krishna, for the soundtarck album of the 2024 film Guntur Kaaram. It was released on 30 December 2023 as the third single from the album, through Aditya Music. The full video song, featuring scenes directly from the film, was released on 1 February 2024 on YouTube.

<i>Naayak</i> (soundtrack) 2012 soundtrack album by S. Thaman

Naayak is the soundtrack album to the 2013 film of the same name directed by V. V. Vinayak starring Ram Charan. The film's musical score is composed by S. Thaman and featured six songs under the lyrics of Chandrabose, Veturi Sundararama Murthy, Bhaskarabhatla Ravi Kumar and Sahithi. The soundtrack was released under the Aditya Music label on 17 December 2012.
