The Guyana Amazon Warriors are a women's cricket team that compete in the Women's Caribbean Premier League and The 6ixty, representing Guyana. The formation of the team was announced in March 2022, aligned with the equivalent men's team, playing their first match in August 2022. The team is captained by Stafanie Taylor.

History

On 14 March 2022, Cricket West Indies announced their intention to hold the first Women's Caribbean Premier League, to run alongside the men's tournament, which began in 2013. Guyana Amazon Warriors were one of three teams announced to be taking part in the tournament, aligned with one of the men's teams. [1] The team's squad was announced on 16 June 2022, with Stafanie Taylor announced as captain of the team. The inaugural Women's Caribbean Premier League is scheduled to begin on 31 August 2022. [2]

On 22 June 2022, it was announced that a T10 tournament would precede the Women's CPL, taking place from 24 to 28 August, known as The 6ixty and involving the three teams competing in the main tournament. [3] The side finished bottom of the group in the inaugural edition of The 6ixty. [4] They also finished bottom of the group in the inaugural Women's Caribbean Premier League. [5] They reached the final of the 2023 Women's Caribbean Premier League, but lost to Barbados Royals. [6]

The Caribbean Premier League is an annual Twenty20 cricket tournament held in the Caribbean. It was founded by Cricket West Indies in 2013 to replace the Caribbean Twenty20 as the premier Twenty20 competition in the Caribbean. It is currently sponsored by Republic Bank Limited and consequently officially named the Republic Bank CPL. The 2018 Caribbean Premier League (CPLT20) or for sponsorship reasons, Hero CPL 2018 was the sixth season of the Caribbean Premier League, the domestic Twenty20 cricket league in the West Indies. Matches were played in seven countries – Trinidad and Tobago, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Guyana, Barbados, Jamaica, Saint Lucia, with three of the matches were played at Lauderhill, Florida, United States. The tournament started on 8 August 2018.

T10 cricket or Ten10 cricket is a short form of cricket. Two teams play a single innings, which is restricted to a maximum of ten overs per side, with the game lasting approximately 90 minutes. The first competition using this format took place in December 2017, the opening season of the T10 League in the United Arab Emirates. The International Cricket Council (ICC) officially sanctioned the league. In May 2020, Eoin Morgan, the captain of the England cricket team, supported the idea of using the format at the Olympics, with former international cricketers Virender Sehwag and Shahid Afridi also supporting the idea. In June 2022, Cricket West Indies became the first full-member cricket board to start a T10 competition, which is called The 6ixty. Later that year, Sri Lanka Cricket and Zimbabwe Cricket announced plans to start their own T10 competitions in 2023.

The 2020 Caribbean Premier League (CPLT20) or for sponsorship reasons, Hero CPL 2020 was the eighth season of the Caribbean Premier League, the domestic Twenty20 cricket league played in the West Indies. All matches were played in Trinidad and Tobago. The tournament started on 18 August and ended on 10 September 2020. On 10 July 2020, the local government gave its approval for the tournament to go ahead, with all the matches taking place at two venues behind closed doors. The full schedule for the tournament was confirmed on 27 July 2020. On 6 August 2020, an official press release stated that all players, officials and administrators involved in the league had tested negative on arrival ahead of a two weeks quarantine period.

The 2022 Caribbean Premier League (CPLT20) or CPL 10 or for sponsorship reasons, Hero CPL 2022 was the tenth season of the Caribbean Premier League, the domestic Twenty20 cricket league that was played in the West Indies. The tournament was held from 31 August, with the final played on 30 September 2022. A women's tournament was also held concurrent with the men's tournament. Saint Kitts and Nevis was named as one of the hosts, with Guyana hosting the playoffs. St Kitts & Nevis Patriots were the defending champions. In June 2022, A modified T10 tournament, called The 6ixty, between the six teams were announced to be scheduled to place between 24 and 28 August 2022 right before the actual tournament.

The 2022 season of The 6ixty, also known as Sky Exch The 6ixty, for sponsorship reasons, was a T10 cricket tournament organized by Cricket West Indies (CWI) and the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) which was played in St. Kitts and Nevis in its inaugural edition, which took place in August 2022 in the lead-up to the CPL. There were both a men's and women's edition of the tournament running at the same time, with the teams and their player rosters being mostly the same as in the CPL and Women's CPL. Several changes were made to the usual rules of T10 cricket in the competition.

Ramon Romario Simmonds is a Barbadian cricketer, who is a left-arm fast medium bowler. He plays for Barbados cricket team in West Indian domestic cricket, having previously represented the West Indies under-19 cricket team.

The tournament took place from 31 August to 10 September 2023, with matches played in Barbados and Trinidad. Trinbago Knight Riders were the holders.

Matthew Nandu is a Canada born Guyanese cricketer who also plays for the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the Caribbean Premier League. His father Arjune Nandu is also a first-class cricketer who went onto appear in four first-class matches for the Guyana team. His playing style is often compared with former Guyanese batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul.
