HMS Vestal was a 20-gun sixth-rate Sphinx-class post ship of the Royal Navy. Commissioned by Captain James Shirley, Vestal escorted a convoy to Newfoundland in August 1777 and began service on the Newfoundland station. On about 31 October the same year the ship disappeared off the coast. It was presumed that she had been lost with all hands in a gale.

Design and construction

Vestal was a 20-gun, 9-pounder Sphinx-class post ship. [1] The class was designed in 1773 by Surveyor of the Navy John Williams. A new class of post ship had not been implemented by the Royal Navy for almost twenty years, and Williams' changes were minor. The Sphinx-class ships were similar to those of the Gibraltar, Seaford, and Squirrel classes of the 1750s, but with finer lines. Ten vessels were ordered to the new design between 1773 and 1776. Following peacetime practice, the first six ships of the class were ordered to Royal Dockyards, but in late 1775 wartime strategy came into place for the American Revolutionary War, and three of the last four Sphinx-class ships were contracted out to civilian dockyards. Vestal, the sixth ship of the class, was ordered on 1 August 1775 to be built at Plymouth Dockyard by the shipwright John Henslow. Vestal was laid down in February the following year, and launched on 23 May 1777 with the following dimensions: 108 feet (32.9 m) along the upper deck, 89 feet 8 inches (27.3 m) at the keel, with a beam of 30 feet 1 inch (9.2 m) and a depth in the hold of 9 feet 8 inches (2.9 m). The ship measured 4316094 tons burthen. [1] She was named after the Vestal Virgin priestesses of the goddess Vesta, being the second Royal Navy vessel to hold the name. [3]

The fitting out process for Vestal was completed on 9 July, with the ship having cost a total of £11,991 to construct. With a crew complement of 140, the post ship held twenty 9-pounder long guns on her upper deck. [1] With the carronade subsequently introduced to British warships, in 1794 Sphinx-class post ships received four 12-pounder carronades on their quarterdeck, and another two on their forecastle. Vestal did not survive long enough in service to receive these updates. [4]

Service

Vestal was commissioned under the command of Captain James Shirley about the time of her launching, before the ship had been coppered. [1] [5] The post ship sailed to join the Newfoundland station in about July the same year, departing Plymouth as escort to a large convoy on 18 July. [6] The ship arrived at St Johns with her convoy on 26 August and was then sent out by Vice-Admiral John Montagu on a cruise. [7] While subsequently sailing off the coast of Newfoundland Vestal disappeared. It was presumed that she had foundered with all hands in a gale on about 31 October. [1] [8] The 14-gun ship sloop HMS Pegasus also disappeared off Newfoundland in October, and was similarly thought to have been lost in a storm as she attempted to make shore. [9] [10]

HMS St Lawrence was a 102-gun first-rate wooden warship of the Royal Navy that served on Lake Ontario during the War of 1812. Built on the lake at the Royal Navy dockyard in Kingston, Ontario, she was the only Royal Navy ship of the line ever to be launched and operated entirely in fresh water. HMS <i>Ariadne</i> (1816)

HMS Ariadne was a 20-gun Hermes-class sixth-rate post ship built for the Royal Navy during the 1810s. The vessel was completed in 1816, modified in the early 1820s and only entered service in 1823. Ariadne was assigned to the Cape of Good Hope Station, followed by a stint in the Mediterranean Sea. The ship served on the North America and West Indies Station from 1829 to 1835. She was paid off in 1835, turned into a coal hulk the following year and sold for scrap in 1841.

HMS Valorous was a 20-gun Hermes-class post ship sixth-rate post ship built for the Royal Navy during the 1810s. She was placed in commission in 1821 for service abroad in the Caribbean and Newfoundland. Two of her captains were forced to resign their commands during this time and the ship was placed in reserve in 1826 until she was broken up in 1829.

HMS Arethusa was a 46-gun Leda-class fifth-rate frigate built for the Royal Navy during the 1810s. The ship was never commissioned and was converted into a lazarette in 1836. She was renamed HMS Bacchus in 1844 and was further converted into a coal hulk in 1851–52. The ship was sold for scrap in 1883.

HMS <i>Melampus</i> (1820) Fifth-rate frigate of the Royal Navy

HMS Melampus was a 46-gun modified Leda-class fifth-rate frigate built for the Royal Navy during the 1810s. Completed in 1820, she was not commissioned until 1845 for the South America Station and was converted into a store and receiving ship in 1855. The ship was briefly assigned as a coast guard ship before being paid off in 1858. Melampus was converted into a Roman Catholic chapel ship in 1866 and then became a store ship twenty years later. The ship was sold for scrap in 1906.

HMS Thisbe was a 46-gun modified Leda-class fifth-rate frigate built for the Royal Navy during the 1820s. The ship was never commissioned and spent her entire career in reserve or on third-line duties. She was converted into a depot ship in 1850 and then into a floating church in 1863. Thisbe was replaced by a shore-based establishment, All Souls Chapel, in 1891 and sold for scrap the following year.

HMS <i>Jason</i> (1800) Royal Navy fifth-rate frigate

HMS Jason was a 36-gun fifth-rate Penelope-class frigate, launched in 1800. She served the entirety of her career in the English Channel, mostly in the frigate squadron of Commodore Charles Cunningham. Serving off the coast of France, especially around Le Havre and Cherbourg, she captured several French privateers and recaptured a British merchant ship in a cutting out expedition. Having only been in commission for around fifteen months, Jason was wrecked off the coast of St Malo on 21 July 1801. Her crew were saved and later exchanged, and in August her wreck was burned to prevent the French from rescuing it.

HMS <i>Stag</i> (1812) Royal Navy fifth-rate frigate

HMS Stag was a 36-gun fifth-rate Apollo-class frigate of the Royal Navy. Commanded by Captain Phipps Hornby for almost her entire career, Stag began her service in the English Channel, capturing two ships in 1813. Mid-way through the year the frigate was sent to join the Cape of Good Hope Station, where she stayed until November 1814. At the Cape Stag formed part of the search for the wreck of the merchant ship William Pitt in Algoa Bay, and then spent time surveying the Bird Islands, of which one was subsequently named after the ship. After returning from the Cape, Stag was laid up at Plymouth Dockyard. She was moved to Sheerness Dockyard in 1821, where after an aborted refit the frigate was broken up.
