The Cambrian Hardyston Formation or Hardyston Quartzite is a mapped bedrock unit in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Contents

It was originally described by Wolff and Brooks in 1898, [1] where two outcrops in Hardyston Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, were described. They originally named it the Hardistonville quartzite, but the name was later changed by Kummel and Weller in 1901 to Hardiston quartzite, [2] and changed again by the same authors a year later to Hardyston quartzite. [3]

Description

Richard Dalton described the Hardyston Formation in 1989 [4] as having a varying lithology. It is composed of a vitreous, light pink, steel gray or brown, locally arkosic, fine to coarse-grained, resistant quartzite. Pebble conglomerate is common at the base of the formation. Locally, where the unit is less than 10 ft thick, it is a fine- to medium-grained, gray, pyritic quartzite, grading into a dark-gray dolomitic sandstone.

Stratigraphy

The Hardyston unconformably overlies Precambrian crystalline basement rocks where it was deposited on an irregular surface and fills only the troughs or depressions. It gradationally underlies the Leithsville Formation of the Kittatinny Supergroup. [4]

The Hardyston occurs in New Jersey only in the highly folded and faulted New Jersey Highlands, northeast of the much younger Mesozoic Newark Basin. [5]

Miller and Myers extended the formation into Pennsylvania in 1939, [6] where it underlies the Tomstown Dolomite.

Relative age dating places the Hardyston in the Early Cambrian.

Fossil content

Trilobites have been found in the calcareous sandstone beds of the formation. [2] One genus is Olenellus . [1]

The Silurian Shawangunk Formation is a mapped bedrock unit in eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. It is named for the Shawangunk Ridge for which it is the dominant rock type. Hamilton Group

The Hamilton Group is a Devonian-age geological group in the Appalachian region of the United States. It is present in New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Ohio, West Virginia, northwestern Virginia and Ontario, Canada. It is mainly composed of marine shale with some sandstone. There are two main formations encompassed by the group: the Mahantango Formation and the Marcellus Shale. In southwestern Virginia, where the two sub-units are not easily distinguishable, the Hamilton Group is broadly equivalent to the Millboro Shale or Millboro Formation. The group is named for the village of Hamilton, New York. These rocks are the oldest strata of the Devonian gas shale sequence.

The Devonian Mahantango Formation is a mapped bedrock unit in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Maryland. It is named for the North branch of the Mahantango Creek in Perry and Juniata counties in Pennsylvania. It is a member of the Hamilton Group, along with the underlying the Marcellus Formation Shale. South of Tuscarora Mountain in south central Pennsylvania, the lower members of this unit were also mapped as the Montebello Formation. Marcellus Formation Middle Devonian age unit of sedimentary rock

The Marcellus Formation or the Marcellus Shale is a Middle Devonian age unit of sedimentary rock found in eastern North America. Named for a distinctive outcrop near the village of Marcellus, New York, in the United States, it extends throughout much of the Appalachian Basin.

The Ordovician Kittatinny Formation or Kittatinny Limestone is a dolomitic limestone formation in New Jersey. The Kittatinny Limestones are located primarily in the Kittatinny Valley where it lies above the Ordovician Martinsburg Formation within the long valley running from Picatinny Arsenal in Rockaway Township, southwest toward Chester Township. It overlies the Cambrian Hardyston Quartzite.

Old Port Formation

The Devonian Old Port Formation is a mapped bedrock unit in Pennsylvania, USA. Details of the type section and of stratigraphic nomenclature for this unit as used by the U.S. Geological Survey are available on-line at the National Geologic Map Database. Current nomenclature usage by U.S. Geological Survey restricts the name Old Port Formation to Pennsylvania, but correlative units are present in adjacent states.

Kittatinny Valley

The Kittatinny Valley is a section of the Great Appalachian Valley in Sussex and Warren counties in northwestern New Jersey that is bounded on the west by Kittatinny Mountain, and in the east by the Highlands region. The valley is roughly 39 miles (63 km) long, with an average breadth of 10 miles (16 km) through the center of Sussex and Warren Counties.

The Late Silurian Tonoloway Formation is a mapped limestone bedrock unit in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.

Mineral Fork Formation Geologic formation

The Mineral Fork Formation is a mapped Proterozoic bedrock unit in Utah.

The geology of Wisconsin includes Precambrian crystalline basement rock over three billion years old. A widespread marine environment during the Paleozoic flooded the region, depositing sedimentary rocks which cover most of the center and south of the state.
