The Hilandar Research Library (HRL), located in the Thompson Library on the campus of Ohio State University, has the largest collection of medieval Slavic manuscripts on microform in the world.

Hilandar Research Library Collection

The collection is composed of microform material from more than 100 different private, museum, and library collections in dozens of countries. It includes many Cyrillic manuscripts on microform, the majority from various monasteries on Mount Athos, Greece, including the entire Slavic collection of the Hilandar Monastery. The library also contains a 100,000 volume reference collection. The entire collection can be viewed in the Jack and Jan Creighton Special Collections Reading Room (Thompson Library). [1] The HRL shares its space with the Resource Center for Medieval Slavic Studies (RCMSS). Both the Hilandar Library and the Resource Center for Medieval Slavic Studies were developed as an outgrowth of the original Hilandar Research Project, which ran from 1969 to 1982. [2]

Resource Center for Medieval Slavic Studies

Founded in 1984, the Resource Center for Medieval Slavic Studies (RCMSS) [3] is an independent center of the Ohio State University College of Humanities and is dedicated to the promotion of medieval Slavic Studies. The Resource Center for Medieval Slavic Studies fosters and supports research and collaboration in medieval Slavic languages, linguistics, history, and culture. [4]

The Glagolitic script is the oldest known Slavic alphabet. It is generally agreed to have been created in the 9th century by Saint Cyril, a monk from Thessalonica. He and his brother Saint Methodius were sent by the Byzantine Emperor Michael III in 863 to Great Moravia to spread Christianity among the West Slavs in the area. The brothers decided to translate liturgical books into the contemporary Slavic language understandable to the general population. As the words of that language could not be easily written by using either the Greek or Latin alphabets, Cyril decided to invent a new script, Glagolitic, which he based on the local dialect of the Slavic tribes from the Byzantine theme of Thessalonica.

The Hilandar Monastery is one of the twenty Eastern Orthodox monasteries in Mount Athos in Greece and the only Serbian monastery there. It was founded in 1198 by Stefan Nemanja and his son Saint Sava. St. Symeon was the former Grand Prince of Serbia (1166-1196) who upon relinquishing his throne took monastic vows and became an ordinary monk. He joined his son Saint Sava who was already in Mount Athos and who later became the first Archbishop of Serbia. Upon its foundation, the monastery became a focal point of the Serbian religious and cultural life, as well as assumed the role of "the first Serbian university". It is ranked fourth in the Athonite hierarchy of 20 sovereign monasteries. The Mother of God through her Icon of the Three Hands (Trojeručica) is considered the monastery's abbess.

The Preslav Literary School, also known as the '''Pliska Literary School''' or '''Pliska-Preslav Literary school''' was the first literary school in the medieval Bulgarian Empire. It was established by Boris I in 886 in Bulgaria's capital, Pliska. In 893, Simeon I moved the seat of the school from the First Bulgarian capital Pliska to the new capital, Veliki Preslav. Preslav was captured and burnt by the Byzantine Emperor John I Tzimisces in 972 in the aftermath of Sviatoslav's invasion of Bulgaria.

Mile V. Pajić is a Serbian visual artist, cultural activist, and researcher, known as the author of monographs on cultural and ecclesiastical heritage. He is also publisher and administrator at several Serbian cultural institutions.
