The Huntington Beach Fire Department provides fire protection and emergency medical services for the city of Huntington Beach, California. [5] In addition to fire services, the HBFD also provides medical transport via a fleet of five ambulances. [4] Each ambulance is staffed by two three-year limited term EMTs and the department transports over 10,000 patients annually. [6]
The Huntington Beach Fire Department was formed as an organization in 1909 with 20 volunteers. John Tinsley, became the first fire chief. The first fire engine was a 1923 Seagrave purchased in 1922. [7]
The Marine Safety Division of the HBFD is responsible for patrolling the 3.5 miles (5.6 km) of shoreline along Huntington Beach and Sunset Beach. [8] The staffing levels vary from just five Marine Safety Officers during the offseason (October to March) to as many as 65 during the summer. The division staffs 30 lifeguard towers along the beach as well as Tower Zero on the Huntington Beach Pier. [9] Members of the Marine Safety division have a wide array of equipment available for their use including 10 Toyota Tacoma patrol trucks, 3 Toyota Tundra patrol trucks, search and rescue SCUBA gear, 3 29-foot Crystaliner twin-engine rescue vessels, 3 Yamaha Waverunners, rigid-hulled inflatable boats and all-terrain vehicles. The Marine Safety Division is primarily responsible for ensuring the safety of swimmers and mariners within the city's jurisdictional beaches. All full-time Marine Safety Officers and most seasonal lifeguards are certified as EMT's and provide BLS emergency medical care to beachgoers. Marine Safety Officers are also deputized peace officers, tasked with enforcing city ordinances on the beach.
In 2019, lifeguards perform 3960 rescues and 159,583 preventative actions. A rescue is defined as the act of physically assisting a person out of the water, who may not have been able to otherwise remove themselves from a hazardous situation. Preventative actions are warnings issued to beachgoers in hazardous areas, with the intent of preventing rescues and drownings.
The Huntington Beach Fire Department staffs 4-person engines and trucks. All engines are ALS-level staffing with a Fire Captain, Fire Engineer, and two Firefighter Paramedics. Trucks are BLS-level with a Fire Captain, Fire Engineer, and two Firefighter EMT's. USAR 42 is cross-staffed with Truck 42 personnel. HazMat 46 is cross-staffed with Engine 46 personnel. ET41, ET42, ET45, and ET46 are 24-hour ambulances. ET241 and ET245 are 12-hour ambulances, that only operate during the daytime hours.

The department is composed of volunteers from 33 fire companies throughout the county, that are represented by the Prince George's County Volunteer Fire & Rescue Association, as well as career firefighters affiliated with the Prince George's County Professional Firefighters and Paramedics Association, IAFF Local 1619. According to the Firehouse Magazine 2010 Combination Fire Department Run Survey, the Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department covers a response area of approximately 580 miles, protects approximately 900,000 people, and has an annual operating budget of $132 million. Prince Georges County Fire/EMS Department responded to 148,506 calls in 2016 according to the 2016 National Run Survey. 29,702 of those calls were fire related and 118,804 that were EMS calls, making Prince Georges County Fire/EMS Department the busiest combination fire department in the United States to submit statistics.
The Albany Fire Department provides fire protection and emergency medical services to the city of Albany, New York. The Department is split up into four different shifts, with each shift made up of 16 companies, which are staffed by 60 members on each shift.
The Loudoun County Combined Fire-Rescue System (LC-CFRS) is made up of the career Loudoun County Fire and Rescue (LCFR) and 16 volunteer companies. LC-CFRS has the responsibility of protecting the citizens and property of the towns, villages, and suburbs of Loudoun County, Virginia, United States, from fires and fire hazards, providing emergency medical services, and technical rescue, including Hazardous Materials, Mass Casualty Incidents, environmental dangers and more. Calvert County, Maryland is the only jurisdiction in the U.S. state of Maryland that still has a 100% all-volunteer Fire, Rescue, and EMS service. Currently none of the firefighters, EMTs, or paramedics in Calvert County are paid. They are all 100% volunteers, who provide countless hours for extensive training and provide emergency services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. However, on January 20, 2018, the Calvert County Board of County Commissioners approved a phased-in approach of hiring paramedics, starting in FY 2019.
The Baltimore City Fire Department (BCFD) provides fire protection and emergency medical services to the city of Baltimore, Maryland. Founded in 1797 and established in 1859, the Baltimore City Fire Department covers an area of 81 square miles (210 km2) of land and 11 square miles (28 km2) of water, with a resident population of over 640,000 and a daytime population of over 1,000,000. The BCFD responds to approximately 235,000 emergency calls annually. There are two International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) locals; IAFF 734 for firefighters and IAFF 964 for officers.
The New York City Fire Department Bureau of Emergency Medical Services, also known as the FDNY EMS Command, or FDNY EMS, was established on March 17, 1996, following the merger of the New York City Fire Department and New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation's EMS division. The Virginia Beach Department of Emergency Medical Services is the largest volunteer based EMS system in the United States and provides emergency medical services to the residents and visitors of Virginia Beach, Virginia. Since the 1940s Virginia Beach has offered free pre-hospital emergency services through 10 volunteer rescue squads supported by 1,100+ volunteers throughout the city. Virginia beach EMS has also been a leader in a variety of pre-hospital technologies including 12-lead transmission, EZ-IO technology and therapeutic hypothermia, rapid sequence induction, video laryngoscope, end tidal CO2 monitoring, STEMI and Stroke programs and community CPR, among others.
