Hymnsongs is the title of a 2003 instrumental album by guitarist Phil Keaggy.
An instrumental is a musical composition or recording without lyrics, or singing, although it might include some inarticulate vocals, such as shouted backup vocals in a Big Band setting. Through semantic widening, a broader sense of the word song may refer to instrumentals. The music is primarily or exclusively produced using musical instruments. An instrumental can exist in music notation, after it is written by a composer; in the mind of the composer ; as a piece that is performed live by a single instrumentalist or a musical ensemble, which could range in components from a duo or trio to a large Big Band, concert band or orchestra.
Philip Tyler "Phil" Keaggy is an American acoustic and electric guitarist and vocalist who has released more than 50 albums and contributed to many more recordings in both the contemporary Christian music and mainstream markets. He is a seven-time recipient of the GMA Dove Award for Instrumental Album of the Year, and was twice nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Gospel Album. He has frequently been listed as one of the world's top-three "finger-style", as well as "finger-picking", guitarists by Guitar Player Magazine readers' polls.
Production notes
Julian Keith Getty is a Northern Irish composer, best known for pioneering "modern hymns". Many of his songs are co-written with his wife, Kristyn Getty, and veteran English songwriter and worship leader Stuart Townend. In re-inventing the traditional hymn form, Getty has created a distinguished catalog of songs teaching Christian doctrine and crossing genres by connecting the world of traditional and classical composition with contemporary and globally-accessible melodies. The repertoire of Getty hymns includes "In Christ Alone", "The Power of the Cross", "Christ Is Risen, He Is Risen Indeed", "By Faith", and others. Getty's hymns top CCLI rankings, national "most-loved" and "most-sung" lists, and are estimated to be sung by 100 million people in churches around the world each year. In addition to their presence in mainline hymn books and choral repertoires, the songs have been recorded by a breadth of artists including Alison Krauss, Ricky Skaggs, Owl City, Newsboys, MercyMe, Natalie Grant, Passion/Kristian Stanfill, Heather Headley, Jim Brickman, Máire Brennan, and the Canterbury Cathedral Choir. Getty has appeared with his wife Kristyn on national television, most notably on Public Television in 2015 with their Christmas Music special, Joy—An Irish Christmas. He has appeared at numerous prestigious events, and tours internationally with the recurring Hymns for the Christian Life and Irish Christmas tours. Getty has performed at venues as diverse as London's Royal Albert Hall, Ryman Auditorium, Carnegie Hall, and The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
