The iHeartRadio Much Music Video Awards (commonly abbreviated as the MMVAs) are annual awards presented by the Canadian television channel Much to honour the year's best music videos. [1]

Much (TV channel) Canadian English language music television channel

Much is a Canadian English language Category A specialty channel currently owned by Bell Media. The channel primarily airs comedy programming oriented towards young adults.

A music video is a short film that integrates a song with imagery, and is produced for promotional or artistic purposes. Modern music videos are primarily made and used as a marketing device intended to promote the sale of music recordings. There are also cases where songs are used in tie-in marketing campaigns that allow them to become more than just a song. Tie-ins and merchandising can be used for toys or for food or other products. Although the origins of the music video date back to musical short films that first appeared in the 1920s, they again came into prominence in the 1980s when the channel MTV based their format around the medium. Prior to the 1980s, these kinds of videos were described by various terms including "illustrated song", "filmed insert", "promotional (promo) film", "promotional clip", "promotional video", "song video", "song clip" or "film clip".

Originally debuting in 1990 as the Canadian Music Video Awards, [2] the awards were renamed in 1995 to its now-former and commonly known name as simply the MuchMusic Video Awards. [3] In 2016, the awards were rebranded with the iHeartRadio banner after Much's parent company Bell Media reached a licensing agreement with iHeartMedia. [4]

iHeartRadio is a free broadcast and internet radio platform owned by iHeartMedia, Inc. It was founded in April 2008 as the website iheartmusic.com. In addition, the service includes thousands of podcasts and now also offers on demand functionality and is the only service that allows listeners to save and replay songs right from live broadcast radio to their digital playlists. The on demand features require a subscription fee. iHeartRadio is available across more than 90 device platforms including online, via mobile devices, and on some video-game consoles.

Bell Media Inc. is the mass media subsidiary of BCE Inc.. Its operations include television broadcasting and production, radio broadcasting, digital media and Internet properties including Sympatico.ca.

iHeartMedia, Inc., formerly CC Media Holdings, Inc., is an American mass media corporation headquartered in San Antonio, Texas. It is the holding company of iHeartCommunications, Inc., a company founded by Lowry Mays and B. J. "Red" McCombs in 1972, and later taken private by Bain Capital, LLC and Thomas H. Lee Partners through a leveraged buyout in 2008. As a result of this buyout, Clear Channel Communications, Inc. began to operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of CC Media Holdings, Inc. On September 16, 2014, CC Media Holdings, Inc. was rebranded iHeartMedia, Inc.; and Clear Channel Communications, Inc., became iHeartCommunications, Inc. On March 14, 2018, the company filed to operate under Chapter 11 bankruptcy, dealing with a debt load in excess of $20 billion.

History

1990–1995: As the Canadian Music Video Awards

The very first Canadian Music Video Awards took place in 1990 on a three-week trip aboard a Canadian National Railway train across Canada. It was sponsored by Diet Pepsi and the train was dubbed "The Pepsi Train". [5] Awards were handed out during its journey, [6] which included 10 Canadian cities. [7]

Diet Pepsi diet cola

Diet Pepsi is a no-calorie carbonated cola soft drink produced by PepsiCo, introduced in 1964 as a variant of Pepsi with no sugar. First test marketed in 1963 under the name Patio Diet Cola, it was re-branded as Diet Pepsi the following year, becoming the first diet cola to be distributed on a national scale in the United States. In the 1960s and 1970s its competition consisted of Tab, produced by The Coca-Cola Company, and Diet Rite soda, produced by Royal Crown. Diet Coke was a later entrant to the diet cola market; though shortly after entering production in 1982 it became the primary competing diet cola to Diet Pepsi.

1996–present: MMVAs

In their modern form, the MMVAs are held as a large street party around 299 Queen Street West—the main downtown Toronto studios of Much and other properties owned by its parent company Bell Media. Much VJs introduce and interview presenters and winners throughout the show. Winners of a Much Music Video Award receive a statue made by New York firm, Society Awards. Viewers can vote for the Fan Fave category which includes Video, Artist or Group, and International Artist or Group.

In 2001, a show was not held due to the September 11 attacks occurring two weeks prior. [8] However, awards were still handed out. [7] All MMVA shows were subsequently held in June until 2017.

September 11 attacks Attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001
