The IKCO Samand is an Iranian sedan produced by IKCO. The Samand production project began in 2001 and the first car was sold the same year. The Samand replaces Iran's previous national automobile, the Paykan, which was sold by Iran Khodro from 1967 to 2005. [1]
The Iranian-designed Samand uses the Peugeot 405 platform, equipped with either IKCO-designed EF7 engines or PSA XU7JP/L3 engines, amongst others. IKCO manufactures 80% of Samand's parts domestically, including its Iranian-designed engine.
For export markets (and also the Iranian market), IKCO uses the Peugeot TU5JP4 engine. This is because the TU5 is a low-consumption and powerful engine, and because of the ease of finding its parts all over Europe, since the TU5 has been used for the Peugeot 206, Peugeot 307 and Peugeot 207. The TU5 version of Samand comes with three new options: driver airbag, pre-tensioner seatbelts, headlight height adjuster and active antenna. The car uses Peugeot 405 components.
Since early 2009, IKCO has used newly developed Iranian engines such as a dual-fuel national engine for its new models (EF7). In mid-2010, IKCO started to install petrol-only EF7 engines on Samand. The engine is not a petrol-based version of EF7 but the compressed natural gas (CNG) parts of the engine are removed and also the engine control unit (ECU) programme. However, the petrol-based version of the engine is currently under development.

In 2009, IKCO announced that they will produce Samand with their new engine EFD in 2010; however, due to the required tests for the engine, readying the car for installing the engine on it and also lack of distribution the Euro IV diesel fuel in the country postponed the production time to 2011. On November 30, 2010 IKCO announced the major changes made in Samand compared to dual-fuel or single fuel Samands for making it compatible for installing the EFD engine on. This main changes are: changing the radiator, installing the intercooler, water and hydraulic hoses, engine housings, exhaust system gearbox and the engine compartment insulations. [2]

The Samand was manufactured in Minsk, Belarus, by the Unison firm, alongside Lublin vans, from 2006 to 2013. Unison signed a new agreement with Iran Khodro in 2018 to produce other car models. [11]
The Samand is assembled by AzSamand in Şamaxı, Azerbaijan under the local name AzSamand Aziz.
Venirauto began assembling Samand sedans (badged Centauro) in Venezuela in 2006.
Siamco produced the Samand, as the (Siamco Sham), in Syria from 2006 to 2012. [12]
From 2008 to 2013, Arab American Vehicles produced the Peugeot Pars, a car similar to the Samand, in Cairo, Egypt.
The Peugeot 405 is a large family car manufactured by the French automaker Peugeot from 1987 to 1997. Its production continued under license from outside Europe in Iran by Iran Khodro Company until 2020. It was voted European Car of the Year for 1988 by the largest number of votes in the history of the contest. About 2.5 million vehicles have been sold worldwide, both in left and right drive versions, as a saloon and estate. In early 2020, the 33-year production run of the Peugeot 405 was counted as the twentieth most long-lived single generation car in history."
Iran Khodro, branded as IKCO, is an Iranian automaker headquartered in Tehran. IKCO was founded in 1962 as Iran National. The public company manufactures vehicles, including Samand, Peugeot and Renault cars, and trucks, minibuses and buses. As of 2009, it produced 688,000 passenger cars per year.
The Paykan is the first Iranian-made car produced by Iran Khodro, between 1967 and 2005. The car, formerly called "Iran National", is a licensed version of the British Rootes Arrow and was very popular in Iran from its introduction until its discontinuation.
The Peugeot 206 is a supermini car (B-segment) designed and produced by the French car manufacturer Peugeot since May 1998 as a replacement to the Peugeot 205. Compressed natural gas (CNG) is a fuel gas mainly composed of methane (CH4), compressed to less than 1% of the volume it occupies at standard atmospheric pressure. It is stored and distributed in hard containers at a pressure of 20–25 megapascals (2,900–3,600 psi; 200–250 atm), usually in cylindrical or spherical shapes.

The Peugeot Pars, also known as Peugeot Persia, is a passenger car produced by the Iranian carmaker Iran Khodro. After 10 years of manufacturing the Peugeot 405 in Iran, the company designed the Peugeot Persia as its facelift, with a front end similar to that of the Peugeot 406. The Peugeot Persia was soon renamed Peugeot Safir and eventually Peugeot Pars because of local copyright problems. The Peugeot Pars has been made in multiple variants. The 16V, ELX and LX models use more powerful PSA 16-valve engines and a few other improvements.

The TU family of small inline-four piston engines by PSA Peugeot Citroën were introduced in 1986 and used in the Peugeot and Citroën range of cars. The Runna is a passenger car made by the Iranian manufacturer IKCO. It is a sedan based on the Peugeot 206, and smaller than the IKCO Samand (X7).
IKCO EF Engines, also known as National Engines, are a family of four-cylinder engines produced by the Iranian car manufacturer Iran Khodro (IKCO). The first engines in this family, the EF7 series, were designed jointly by Iran Khodro Powertrain Company (IPCO) and F.E.V GmbH of Germany. The later models were designed by IPCO alone. IPCO is the powertrain design and production company of IKCO.
The IKCO Samand Soren is a large family car manufactured by Iran Khodro (IKCO). It is a facelift version of the IKCO Samand, first released in early 2007. It comes with a driver airbag, pretensioner seat-belts, headlight height adjuster, and active antenna. It is named after Surena, an ancient Parthian spahbed (general).
The IKCO Dena is a family car manufactured by the Iran Khodro (IKCO) auto company; it was unveiled in April 2011, but mass-production only began in 2015. Its price range will be between USD$12,000 and USD$13,000, depending on the specific model and accessories. Dena will replace the IKCO Samand in non-domestic markets after the manufacturer starts mass production.
AzSamand was an automobile factory belonging to Evsen Group Company located in Şamaxı, Azerbaijan.
IKCO Arisun and IKCO Arisun 2 are small coupé utilities (pickups) designed by Iran Khodro, based on the Peugeot 405. Production started in 2015, and it costs about $7,000. Production was temporarily halted in December 2016, but has since recommenced.
The Iran National Auto Loan was a short lived financial arrangement between the government of Hassan Rouhani Central Bank of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Iran Khodro, SAIPA and other Iranian car manufacturers who produced cars within the country.
IKAP is a joint venture company between Iran Khodro and Stellantis, based in Tehran; it was established in 2016. It produces some Peugeot models and imports other models in CBU for Iran market. The purposes of creating this company are manufacturing new Peugeot products in Iran and exports them to the Middle East and then the creation of Peugeot's production hub in West Asia. Products of this company in the first phase will be the Peugeot 2008, Peugeot 208, Peugeot 301 and Peugeot 508.
