Imran Garda (born 7 August 1982) is a South African journalist, presenter, and award-winning novelist. [1] The long-running host of The Newsmakers [2] from 2015 to 2020, Garda returned to TRT World in 2022 with the one-on-one interview program The InnerView. [3] He was formerly the host of Third Rail [4] on Al Jazeera America [5] based in New York City. Garda was also a senior presenter [6] and producer for AJ+, Al Jazeera Media Network's all digital video news channel based in San Francisco. Previously, he worked for Al Jazeera English in Doha, [7] Qatar and Washington, [8] DC. He also hosted [9] the award-winning [10] show The Stream .

Early career

Garda's media career [11] began as a sports presenter and reporter for SuperSport in South Africa in 2002. He covered mostly cricket and football. While at Supersport he was published as a freelance writer on politics—which included a series on Bosnia-Herzegovina ten years after the Yugoslav Wars ended.

With Al Jazeera

Garda worked in two different stints at Al Jazeera.

First stint

Garda joined Al Jazeera English in 2006 initially as a sports presenter, but was moved to news during the piloting phase. He anchored the news and Inside Story from Doha, Kuala Lumpur and Washington DC. He also hosted the award-winning (RTS) The Stream until he left the network in 2012. He reported from the US, Sudan, Turkey, Egypt, Namibia, Bahrain, Lesotho, India, South Africa and the Hajj in Saudi Arabia. Garda hosted a 13-part series on the aftermath of the War in Gaza - Focus on Gaza [12] and presented the long-form documentaries The Father of the Turks, [13] A Voyage of Life and Death [14] and India's Silent War. [15] He also contributed feature articles and blog posts to Aljazeera.com and The Huffington Post. [16] On 7 June 2012, Al Jazeera English announced that Garda would be returning to South Africa. [17]

Second stint

In 2013, Garda returned [18] to the network for the network's digital channel AJ+ based in San Francisco, California where he specialized in short documentaries, including a special [19] on Black Lives Matter protesters in Ferguson, Missouri. Beginning in 2015, Garda also anchored the news at Al Jazeera America in New York City. On 16 April 2015 it was announced that Garda would host a show on Al Jazeera America called Third Rail, an hour-long, guest-driven debate program focused on under-reported stories and hot-button topics. TRT World

In October 2015, Garda joined TRT World, Turkish Radio and Television Corporation's English-language channel [21] as host of The Newsmakers, [22] an interview and debate program with "in-depth reports and strong, unfiltered debates - examining the people and the stories that are shaping our lives." [23]

In April 2016 Garda and his colleague Jerome Evans were given rare access to make a documentary in North Korea during the Pyongyang Marathon. [24] Garda documented the challenges of doing journalism in the country. [25]

In their documentary The Invisible Empire: the KKK and Hate in America, [26] Garda and Evans got up close with the Ku Klux Klan in a show that highlighted the resurgence of white supremacism in the United States.

The Newsmakers also did a special show from London on the occasion of the historic Brexit referendum. [27]

Imran's final episode on the program aired in July 2020. During his time hosting The Newsmakers he also hosted the documentary series "Crossing the Line [28] ," featuring guests such as Imran Khan, Yanis Varoufakis, Julius Malema and Juan Manuel Santos.

In 2022, Garda launched The InnerView, [29] a one-on-one interview program for which he also serves as executive producer. The show features half-hour in-depth interviews with some of the world's most fascinating people, including prominent historians such as British historian Bettany Hughes, actors such as Adrian Grenier, politicians such as Ehud Olmert, John Bolton, Kersti Kaljulaid and Miguna Miguna, as well as figures from sport, music and the arts.

Novel: The Thunder That Roars

In June 2014 Umuzi, an imprint of Penguin Random House published [30] Garda's debut novel The Thunder That Roars. [31] The book was awarded the 2015 Olive Schreiner Prize for prose and optioned for a feature film. A tale of a journalist who embarks on a journey to find a missing family friend and uncovers long-held family secrets and undergoes an inward journey of his own, the book was described by adjudicators as, "South African literature [that] soars above the tortuous apartheid history and redefines globalisation." [32] Reviewer Eric Garland called it, "[A] breathtakingly strong debut novel about the self-discovery and strained relationships of human beings in an era that defies understanding." [33] It was also long-listed for The Etisalat Prize for Literature. [34] Garda is represented by The Lennon-Ritchie Agency. [35]

Garda has interviewed many influential people throughout his career. They include former President of Afghanistan Hamid Karzai, President of East Timor Jose Ramos-Horta, [36] former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, [37] former UK Prime Ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown,  former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, NASA Administrator Charles Bolden, Australian philosopher Peter Singer, former President of Estonia Kersti Kajulaid, [38] South African politician and President of the Economic Freedom Fighters Julius Malema, [39] former President of Georgia and Governor of Odesa Oblast Mikheil Saakashvili, ICC Chief prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo, former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan, [40] British historians Bettany Hughes [41] and Antony Beevor, Tibetan PM in exile Lobsang Sangay, football star Frederic Kanoute, [42] Jordan's Prince El Hassan bin Talal, [43] British singer Yusuf / Cat Stevens, UNAIDS Executive Director Winnie Byanyima [44] and former Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu. [45]

Garda has interviewed spokespersons and ministers from governments across the world. He has also had the opportunity to interview non-state actors from groups such as Hamas, Somali rebel groups, Chechen rebels, Uganda's LRA, and other designated terror groups. He has chaired panels for the World Humanitarian Summit, United Nations Human Rights Council, UN Migration (IOM), TRT World Forum, Antalya Diplomacy Forum and Advertising Week.

Frost Over the World was a television interview and news talk show, with Sir David Frost as host. The show was broadcast on Al Jazeera English. Frost, a famed English television presenter, interviewed well-known politicians, diplomats, writers, thinkers, academics, entertainers, business leaders, scientists, humanitarians, and other newsmakers. The editor of the programme was the journalist Charlie Courtauld and producers include Richard Brock, Kate Newman, Alex Nunes and Portia Walker.

Ayman Mohyeldin is an Egyptian-born political commentator based in New York for NBC News and MSNBC. Previously the anchor of an MSNBC weekday afternoon show, Ayman Mohyeldin Reports, he currently hosts Ayman on weekend evenings on MSNBC, and Fridays on Peacock. He previously worked for Al Jazeera and CNN. He was one of the first Western journalists allowed to enter and report on the handing over and trial of the deposed President of Iraq Saddam Hussein by the Iraqi Interim Government for crimes against humanity. Mohyeldin has also covered the 2008–09 Gaza War as well as the Arab Spring.

George Azar is a Lebanese-American photojournalist and documentary filmmaker. His photographs have appeared on the front pages of The New York Times, the International Herald Tribune, The Economist, Saudi Aramco World and other leading publications. Since 2006 he and Mariam Shahin, have produced over 50 films for the international satellite news network, Al Jazeera. Azar has also produced several documentaries for the internet news channel Vice News, including "Crime and Punishment in Gaza", "Renegade Jewish Settlers" and 'The Islamic State vs Lebanon". Azar has covered the Middle East and Arab/Islamic culture since 1981 and is the subject of the CBS Emmy Award-winning news feature, Beirut Photographer. He was also profiled in the BBC's Firing Line. He was nominated for the 2007 Rory Peck Award for his film Gaza Fixer. It was Al Jazeera's second entry into the U.S. television market, after the launch of beIN Sports in 2012. The channel, which had persistently low ratings, announced in January 2016 that it would close on 12 April 2016, citing the "economic landscape".

Al Jazeera Arabic is a Qatari state-owned Arabic-language news television network. It is based in Doha and operated by the Al Jazeera Media Network, which also operates Al Jazeera English. It is the largest news network in the Middle East and North Africa region. It was founded in 1996 by the then Emir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.

TRT World is a Turkish public broadcaster which broadcasts in English 24 hours a day and is operated by the TRT and based in the Ulus quarter of Ankara. It provides worldwide news and current affairs focusing on Turkey, Europe, Africa, and Western and Southern Asia. In addition to its headquarters based in Ankara, TRT World has broadcasting centres and studios in Washington, D.C. and London. It is a member of the Association for International Broadcasting.
