The Innisfail Advocate was a newspaper published in Innisfail, Queensland, Australia. [1]
Patrick James Leahy launched the Johnstone River Advocate on 6 December 1906. [2] On Leahy's death in 1927 the newspaper was purchased by William Henry George Groom. [3] [4]
It was originally published as a weekly newspaper; Groom moved to a bi-weekly schedule in January 1929. [4] From November 1940, the newspaper was published daily and in May 1941 was renamed the Evening Advocate. [4]
In 1973 a massive increase in the cost of telex messages used to circulate syndicated news made the newspaper financially unviable and Groom threatened to close the newspaper in September 1973. However he was persuaded to continue to publish the newspaper and from October 1973 it was published only three times a week without telexed news content. Groom retired in January 1978, selling the newspaper. [4]
In 2015, the newspaper continues to be published bi-weekly as the Innisfail Advocate by Newscorp. [5]
Along with a number of other regional Australian newspapers owned by NewsCorp, the newspaper ceased publication in June 2020. [6] It was deemed "unprofitable" by Newscorp.[ citation needed ]

Father Michael Martin Clancy OSA (1868–1931) was an Irish-Australian Roman Catholic priest. He was the first resident Parish Priest in Geraldton, a town and parish in North Queensland, Australia. He was an inspirational parish priest who developed the Parish, established Catholic education in the Johnstone River district and built Innisfail's present Mother of Good Counsel Church. He played an important part in the development in the town and the district. Father Clancy was enthusiastically involved in the life of the town, local committees and governing bodies. He was instrumental in the changing of Geraldton's name to Innisfail in 1910. He also advocated for forging a link to the Atherton Tableland and the use of Mourilyan Harbour by shipping. Mount Father Clancy Garreth McGonnell near the Beatrice River was named in his honour.
