Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (IMHANS) is an Indian autonomous institute in Kozhikode under the Government of Kerala. The permanent campus of the institute is situated adjacent to the Government Medical College, Kozhikode [1]

The institution was set up through a government order in 1983 [2] and was chosen to be a centre for excellence by the Government of India in 2009. The institution leads the Community mental health services in the state of Kerala with support from the Kerala State Mental Health Programme [3]

Education

IMHANS is a teaching hospital with postgraduate programmes in mental health. The academic programme is affiliated with the Kerala University of Health Sciences. [4] Additionally M.Phil. programmes in Clinical Psychology and Psychiatric Social work are offered. The institution also offers a specialized post-basic diploma programme in Psychiatric Nursing [5]

Research

The Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences has a state of art molecular laboratory with infrastructure for molecular assays including real-time polymerase chain reaction equipment, Capillary Sequencer, and other instruments required for bioinformatics, biochemical and neurophysiology studies. [6] A recent agreement with the Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology aimed at developing a laboratory for molecular genetics diagnosis and research is in the anvil. [7] This initiative aims to develop the Neuroscience Research laboratory at the institute into a centre of excellence in genetic diseases.

National Centre for Disease Control Indian medical health government agency

The National Centre for Disease Control is an institute under the Indian Directorate General of Health Services, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. It was established in July 1963 for research in epidemiology and control of communicable diseases and to reorganize the activities of the Malaria Institute of India. The State Highway 59 (SH-59) is the longest state highway in Kerala. The proposed highway extends from Nandarapadavu in Kasaragod district to Parassala in Thiruvananthapuram district, will have a length of 1332.16 km and will pass through 13 of the 14 districts, the exception being Alappuzha as that district is not part of the hilly ranges of Kerala. Dr. Vinod Scaria FRSB, FRSPH is an Indian biologist, medical researcher pioneering in Precision Medicine and Clinical Genomics in India. He is best known for sequencing the first Indian genome. He was also instrumental in the sequencing of The first Sri Lankan Genome, analysis of the first Malaysian Genome sequencing and analysis of the Wild-type strain of Zebrafish and the IndiGen programme on Genomics for Public Health in India

The Banyan

The Banyan is a non-governmental organization based in Chennai, India was founded in 1993 by Vandana Gopikumar and Vaishnavi Jayakumar to cater to the mentally ill and homeless women in the city.

The School of Life Sciences, Kannur University hosts two departments, Department of Biotechnology and Microbiology, which was established in 2000 for conducting master's degree (M.Sc) courses and research (Ph.D) in Biotechnology and Microbiology. An Inter University Centre for Bioscience was also established at the department by the Higher Education Department, Government of Kerala, to be a global center of excellence for research in biological sciences. Mental health in India Overview of mental health care system in India

Mental healthcare in India is a right secured to every person in the country by law. Indian mental health legislation, as per a 2017 study, meets 68% (119/175) of the World Health Organization (WHO) standards laid down in the WHO Checklist of Mental Health Legislation. However, human resources and expertise in the field of mental health in India is significantly low when compared to the population of the country. The allocation of the national healthcare budget to mental health is also low, standing at 0.16%. India's mental health policy was released in 2014.
