Internationale Bachakademie Stuttgart is a foundation in Stuttgart, founded by Helmuth Rilling in 1981 to foster international concerts and workshops, namely Musikfest Stuttgart, dedicated especially to the music of Johann Sebastian Bach in relation to present day composition. Its director has been Hans-Christoph Rademann from 1 June 2013. [1]

Musikfest Stuttgart

The foundation has organized several concert series including the annual "Musikfest Stuttgart" (until 2008 "Europäisches Musikfest Stuttgart").

Ensembles

It has supported the ensembles Gächinger Kantorei, Bach-Collegium Stuttgart and the annual Festivalensemble Stuttgart [2] and has conducted master classes and lecture recitals.

International collaboration

Bachakademie Stuttgart has collaborated with the Oregon Bach Festival and other Bach Academies in Caracas, Buenos Aires, Tokyo, Osaka, Sendai, Budapest, Cluj-Napoca, Kraków, Krasnoyarsk, Moscow, Prague, Riga, Tallinn, Athens, and also with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra.

In 1994 the Internationale Bachakademie Stuttgart received the "UNESCO Music Prize" of the International Music Council. [3]

Commissions

It has commissioned compositions such as the Requiem of Reconciliation in 1995, in 2000 works for the "Passion 2000" project by Sofia Gubaidulina (Johannes-Passion), Tan Dun (Water Passion After St. Matthew), Osvaldo Golijov ( La Pasión según San Marcos - The Passion according to St. Mark), and Wolfgang Rihm, or in 2009 Messiah by Sven-David Sandström, [4] premiered at the Oregon Bach Festival and also performed at the Rheingau Musik Festival and the Berliner Philharmonie. [5]

Recordings

In an "Edition Bachakademie“ all works of Bach were published for the Bach Year 2000 on 172 CDs in the Hänssler Classic label of Hänssler Verlag, then in 2010 for Rilling's 75th birthday as a Bach iPod.

The Rheingau Musik Festival (RMF) is an international summer music festival in Germany, founded in 1987. It is mostly for classical music, but includes other genres. Concerts take place at culturally important locations, such as Eberbach Abbey and Schloss Johannisberg, in the wine-growing Rheingau region between Wiesbaden and Lorch.

Gächinger Kantorei is an internationally known German mixed choir, founded by Helmuth Rilling in 1954 in Gächingen and conducted by him until 2013, succeeded by Hans-Christoph Rademann.

Bach-Collegium Stuttgart is an internationally known German instrumental ensemble, founded by Helmuth Rilling in 1965 to accompany the Gächinger Kantorei in choral music with orchestra. Its members are mostly orchestra musicians from Germany and Switzerland who get together for projects associated with the choir and also instrumental programs of their own.

Credo is a large-scale sacred composition for soloists, children's choir, mixed choir and orchestra by Krzysztof Penderecki, completed in 1998. It was commissioned by Helmuth Rilling for the Oregon Bach Festival, where it was first performed on 11 July 1998. Penderecki expanded the liturgical text by hymns and Bible verses in Latin, Polish and German. A recording won the 2000 Grammy Award for best choral performance.

Benedikt Kristjánsson is an Icelandic operatic and concert tenor who is based in Germany and has appeared internationally. He focuses on Baroque music, especially by Johann Sebastian Bach, but has also performed and recorded Romantic lieder and contemporary music. He has performed Bach's St John Passion in an arrangement for one singer, keyboard and percussion, notably in a live broadcast from Bach's resting place at the Thomaskirche on Good Friday 2020.
