Many sports in Iran are both traditional and modern. Tehran, for example, was the first city in West Asia to host the Asian Games in 1974, and continues to host and participate in major international sporting events to this day. Freestyle wrestling has been traditionally regarded as Iran's national sport, however today, football is the most popular sport in Iran. Because of economic sanctions, the annual government's budget for sport was about $80 million in 2010 or about $1 per person.
Julio Velasco is an Argentine former professional volleyball player and coach. He obtained Italian citizenship in 1992. Velasco was inducted into the Volleyball Hall of Fame in 2005. He is the head coach of the Italy women's national volleyball team, which he led to the Gold medal in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The Iranian Volleyball Super League (IVSL) is a professional volleyball league in Iran at the top of the Iranian volleyball league system. It was founded in 1975 as the Pasargad Cup, but after the Iranian Revolution it was renamed to the first Division. In 1997 the league system was revamped, and the Iranian Super League was established.

The IRIVF is responsible for organizing the Iran men's national volleyball team and Iran women's national volleyball team.

The initial gap between championships was four years, but since 1987 they have been awarded every two years. The top three teams qualified for the FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship. The current champion is Japan, which won its tenth title at the 2023 tournament.

The current champion is Iran, which won its seventh title at the 2024 tournament.
The Asian Men's Club Volleyball Championship, previously the AVC Cup Men's Club Tournament, is an annual continental club volleyball competition organised by the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC), the sport's continental governing body. The competition was first contested in 1999 in China. It was not held in 2003 and 2020 due to 2002–2004 SARS outbreak and COVID-19 pandemic respectively.

Negin Shirtari Foumani is a volleyball player from Iran, who plays as a play cards for the Women's National Team and CD Aves team. She participated in the championship in Korea in 2019 with the women's volleyball team.
Mahsa Saberi ; She is a player of the Iran women's national volleyball team. In 2018, she joined to the Turkish club Balıkesir DSİ with Mona Ashofteh and she is currently a player of this club. She also has a history of playing for Sarmayeh Bank Tehran VC and winning the Iranian Super League. She plays as an Outside Hitter.
Mahsa Kadkhoda is an Iranian volleyball player who plays for the Iran women's national volleyball team. She has played for Bank Sarmayeh and Peykan Tehran and is also a runner-up in the Iranian Premier League. She is the first player from South Khorasan to play in the national women's volleyball team. Kadkhoda is a graduate of Physical Education and Master of Physiology who became a member of the national team in 2007 and was sent to world competitions in 2010 as the captain of the Iranian national youth team. Together with Persepolis Club, she has won the third place in the Asian Volleyball Championship. She was runner-up with the national team of the Hungarian international tournament Szeles Peter and Mahsa Kadkhoda was selected as the best spiker of the tournament.
Shekoufeh Safari is an Iranian volleyball player from Iran women's national volleyball team who plays for the Women's National Team and Zob Ahan Cultural and Sport Club. She is in the position of middle blocker.
