Isu, Nigeria

Isu is a local government area in Imo State of Nigeria. Its headquarters are in the town of Umundugba. Other communities are Amandugba, Ekwe, Uburu Ekwe, Isunjaba, Amurie Omanze, Ebenator Ekwe and Oboro Amurie. [1] The name comes from the Isu people, a subgroup of the Igbo people. [2]

Amandugba and neighboring Umundugba were originally one town. [3] Both communities have suffered from a horrid water supply from streams and brooks that often evaporate at an alarming speed. The mentioned bodies of water also serve as breeding grounds for malaria-borne mosquitoes and are sources of diseases such as cholera, diarrhea, dysentery, and parasites such as the guinea worm and the tape worm. A recent project by Africa We Care, a charity, has started to develop a supply based on a bore-hole. [4]

A local school in the area is known as the Missionary Institute of God's Image (MIGI) German Language School. This school is located in Amurie Omanze in Isu Local Government Area. The MIGI German Language School has the recognition of the Imo State Ministry of Tertiary Education. German language is being taught there for students who wish to study in Germany. Married couples that would like to join certain relatives also attend several lessons. [5]

Population

The estimated population of Isu LGA is 111,213, with the vast majority being members of the Igbo ethnic group. The Igbo language is extensively spoken in the LGA while Christianity is the widely practiced religion in the area. A number of colourful festivals are held in Isu LGA and these include the Igba nta festival.

Geography

Isu LGA covers a total area of 40 km squared and has an average temperature of 26 °C. The LGA is forested with average wind speed in the area put at 11 km/h. The average humidity level of Isu LGA is 71 percent while the area has a number of rivers and streams flowing through its territory.

Climate

In Isu, the dry season is hot, muggy, and partly cloudy whereas the wet season is warm, oppressive, and overcast. The average annual temperature ranges from 65°F to 88°F, with lows of 59°F and highs of 91°F being rare.

The best time of year to visit Isu for hot-weather activities, according to the beach/pool score, is from late November to early February. [6]

Economy

Farming is an important aspect of the economy of Isu LGA with the area known for the cultivation of a number of crops such as yam, cassava, and oil palm. Trade also flourishes in the LGA with a number of markets where a plethora of commodities are bought and sold found in the area. Other economic activities engaged in by the dwellers of Isu LGA include lumbering and blacksmithing. [7]

Umunoha is a town in southeastern Nigeria near the city of Owerri. It is a typical Igbo town. It is bounded on the north by Eziama Obiato and Afara communities; on the south and southwest by Ogbaku, Azara Obiato and Ejemekwuru communities; and on the south and southeast by Ifakala and Afara communities. It is served by the great east-west road, the Port-Harcourt-Lagos Highway. Umunoha is about thirteen kilometers from Owerri, the Imo State capital. Njaba is a Local Government Area of Imo State, Nigeria. Its headquarters is located in the town of Nnenasa. It has an area of 84 km2 and a population of 143,485 at the 2006 census. The 2011 density projection is 2,004.5 inhabitants/km2. The postal code of the area is 474.

Igalamela-Odolu is a Local Government Area in Kogi State, Nigeria. It is bordered by the Niger River in the west and Enugu State in the east. Its headquarters are in the town of Ajaka in the north of the area at7°10′16″N6°49′35″E.

Historical origin of Ekwe is based on oral myth and legend of tradition of common ancestors passed from generation to generation. According to this oral tradition -"Nnamike Onuoma", the founder of the Ekwe community had two sons -Ekwe and Okwudor. Okwudor later separated from his brother and settled at the other side of the Njaba River and founded the Okwudor community. Ekwe stayed put in the area, which is now known as Ekwe.[1]

Amauju is an autonomous community of Imo State in southeastern Nigeria. The town is part of Imo State's Isu Local Government Area, zoned to Orlu Senatorial Zone.

The Isu people are a subgroup of the Igbo people of southeast Nigeria. In the pre-colonial era, the Igbo people were protected from external invasion by the dense forests of the region, which also had the effect of encouraging diversity. Thus as warriors the neighboring Owerri people looked down on the Isu people, who were traders.
