Jan Boyen (born 22 April 1970) is a former Paralympian sportsman from Belgium. He competed in powerlifting, motorcycle sport, para-cycling and equestrianism. [1] [2]
Boyen was born in Belgium in 1970. A farmer's son, having performed his military service as a paratrooper, he became a professional soldier. It was on his way to the army barracks on his motorcycle that he was hit by a car and that his left leg had to be amputated. [1] In 2006 he suffered more serious injury when he was kicked by a horse and lost a kidney, ruptured his spleen and liver, and suffered from a collapsed lung. [1]
During his rehabilitation after his motorcycle crash, Boyen spent a lot of time in the gym, so much so, that he became a four times champion powerlifting in Belgium. [1]
Switching to cycling, he became UCI world champion in 2007 on the track in the Individual Pursuit LC2 [3] and on the road in the road time trial LC2. [4]
In 2007, although an amputee, he became a professional cyclist in the able-bodied peloton with the Jartazi - Promo Fashion Continental Cycling Team team. [5] In 2008 while still on the team, he took part in the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing, China. He competed in the LC1–2/CP 4 men's road race and the LC2 road time trial ending just outside the medal positions in both races. On the track, he competed in the LC2 1 km time trial finishing 7th and the Individual pursuit where he finished 3rd and won the only medal of his Paralympic career and the only Paralympic medal for Belgium in Beijing. He was the flag bearer for Belgium at the closing ceremony of the Olympics. [2] And he was awarded the 2008 Trophy Victor Boin in Belgium. [6] Boyen however was himself disappointed with his results in Beijing and gave up cycling. Beijing turned out to be his last cycling competition, with hindsight an all too rash decision he regrets to this day. [1]
As Boyen had for years owned and traded horses, he now turned his attention to show jumping and quickly amassed a quite remarkable record as one-legged equestrian. In 2023 he stood 19 times on an international podium, 13 of which as a winner. [7]
The 2008 Summer Paralympic Games, the 13th Summer Paralympic Games, took place in Beijing, China from September 6 to 17, 2008. As with the 2008 Summer Olympics, equestrian events were held in Hong Kong and sailing events in Qingdao. It was first time the new Paralympic logo featured in the Summer Paralympics since its rebranding after the 2004 Summer Paralympics.
William Speed Lane Fox-Pitt is an English equestrian who competes in eventing. His career highlights include winning three Olympic medals in the team event, with silver in 2004 and 2012, and bronze in 2008. At the World Equestrian Games, he won team gold and individual silver in 2010, and team silver and individual bronze in 2014. He also won World team medals in 2002 and 2006. At the European Championships, he has won six team gold medals, as well as Individual silver in 1997 and 2005, and Individual bronze in 2013. He is the recordman CCI*****'s winner with 14 grand slam titles. In 2011, he became the first rider to win five different five-star events, having won the Burghley Horse Trials a record six times, Rolex Kentucky three times, Stars of Pau twice, the Badminton Horse Trials twice, and the Luhmühlen Horse Trials once (2008). A serious fall in 2015 left him in a coma for two weeks, but he came back to make the British eventing team and attend the 2016 Summer Olympics. He was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2018 Birthday Honours.

Benjamin Richard Maher MBE is a British show jumper. He represented Britain at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, 2009 European Championships in Windsor, 2012 London Olympics, 2016 Rio Olympics, the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the 2024 Paris Olympics. He won the team jumping gold at the London Olympics with Team GB, their first team jumping gold medal for 60 years, an individual gold for Great Britain at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and team jumping gold again at the 2024 Paris Summer Games. That win tied him with three-day eventer Richard Meade and dressage rider Charlotte Dujardin as the most successful British Olympic equestrians in gold medals won.

Myron Simpson is a semi-professional New Zealand road and track cyclist. Following a successful track cycling career which includes a silver medal in the Omnium at the UCI Junior Track World Championships in Mexico (2007) and a fourth placing in the 1000m time trial at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India, Simpson's focus has switched somewhat to road cycling. In November, 2012 he was signed by Luxembourg-based UCI Continental cycling team Differdange–Losch for the 2013 European summer but was forced to return home early after injuring his shoulder.

Alistair Donohoe is an Australian cyclist, who currently rides for Australian club team Blackburn CC. Following a right arm impairment in 2009, Donohoe became a multiple medallist at the UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships and UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships. He won two silver medals at the 2016 Rio Paralympics, a silver and bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics and a silver and bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Paralympics.
