Janne Juhani Salmi (born 17 April 1969) [1] [2] is a Finnish orienteering competitor and world champion. He won the short distance at the 1997 World Orienteering Championships, and a gold medal in the relay at the 2001 World Orienteering Championships. He won a total of three individual world championship medals and four relay medals, and won the Jukola relay three times with the club Turun Suunnistajat.
After his active career Salmi coached the Finnish national orienteering team between 2005 and 2010, and since 2020 he has been head coach for the Norwegian national team.
Salmi won a silver medal in the classic distance at the 1995 World Orienteering Championships, behind winner Jörgen Mårtensson. He was part of the Finnish relay team which won silver medals, and placed eleventh in the short distance. [3] He won a gold medal in the short distance at the 1997 World Orienteering Championships in Grimstad, as well as a second WOC silver medal in the relay. [4] He had one race victory, winning the short distance in Slovakia, and placed ninth overall in the 1998 Orienteering World Cup. [5] At the 1999 World Orienteering Championships he won a bronze medal in the short distance, and his third WOC silver medal in the relay. [6] At the 2001 World Orienteering Championships in Tampere he placed sixth in the long distance, and won a gold medal with the Finnish relay team. [7] He won a bronze medal in the long distance at the 2001 Open Nordic Orieneering Championships (NOC) in Finland. He also won a bronze medal in the middle distance at the 2003 NOC in Sweden. [5] He placed ninth in the middle distance at the 2003 World Orienteering Championships. [8] Married to Swiss orienteer Vroni König-Salmi. Salmi won the Jukola relay in 1994, 1996 and 2001 with his club Turun Suunnistajat. [9]
Salmi coached the Finnish national team from 2005 to 2010. He also worked some years as sports and development manager at a sports academy in Åbo. He was assigned head coach for the Norwegian national orienteering team in 2020, succeeding Jørgen Rostrup. [10] In 2023 he extended his coaching engagement for three more years, until 2026. [11]
Simone Niggli-Luder is a Swiss orienteering athlete who has twice won all four women's competitions at the world championships. She is widely seen as one of the greatest orienteers of all time.
The World Orienteering Championships is an international orienteering competition which has been organized by the International Orienteering Federation (IOF) since 1966. The World Orienteering Championships is considered to be the most prestigious competition in competitive orienteering. The races are contested between members of the IOF, which are each aligned to a National Olympic Committee.
Thierry Gueorgiou is a French orienteer who holds the record for gold medals won at the World Orienteering Championships for a male athlete, with 14 gold medals between 2003 and 2017. Gueorgiou has won more than 20 gold medals in international competitions, including the World Orienteering Championships (WOC) middle distance event a record eight times: 2003–2005, 2007–2009, 2011 and 2017.
Allan Mogensen is a Danish orienteering competitor, winner of the 1993 World Orienteering Championship, the first male Danish orienteer to win an individual World Championship. He was also a member of the Danish gold-winning team in 1997, and finished 3rd in World Cup 2000. Mogensen won the Jukola relay in 1991.
Øyvin Thon is a Norwegian orienteering competitor, and has seven gold medals at the World Orienteering Championships.
Pasi Ikonen was a Finnish orienteering competitor, winner of the middle distance at the 2001 World Orienteering Championships. His other achievements include two individual silver medals at the world championships, and medals at the World Games and the European championships.
Minna Kauppi is a Finnish orienteer, who was born in Asikkala and lives in Lahti. Kauppi is a nine-time World Champion, including five golds from relays. Kauppi is the most successful Finnish orienteer of all time when ranked by number of gold medals at the World Orienteering Championships. Kauppi was named Finnish Sports Personality of the Year in 2010.
Vroni König-Salmi is a Swiss orienteering competitor. She won the 2001 Sprint distance World Orienteering Championships, and is two times Relay World Champion, from 2003 and 2005, as member of the Swiss winning teams. Also an individual bronze medal from 2005, and Relay bronze medals from 1997 and 2006. Married to Finnish orienteer Janne Salmi.
Bernt Bjørnsgaard is a Norwegian orienteering competitor and World champion.
Chris Terkelsen is a Danish orienteering competitor and World champion. He won a gold medal in the 1997 World Orienteering Championships in Grimstad with the Danish Relay team. He received a silver medal in the 2005 World Orienteering Championships in Aichi. He won the overall World Cup in 1998, and received a silver medal in the 2004 European Championships with the Danish relay team. Terkelsen won the 1997, 1998 and 2000 editions of the Jukola relay.
Marianne Andersen is a Norwegian orienteering competitor. She has won twelve individual medals in the world and European championships, as well as winning nine national championships. In 2017 she won a silver medal in the middle distance after seven years without a medal.
Anders Nordberg is a Norwegian orienteering competitor. He received a bronze medal at the 2004 World Orienteering Championship, and again a bronze medal in 2007. He finished second in the overall World Cup 2007.
The Finnish Orienteering Federation is the governing body for the sport of orienteering in Finland. The federation was founded in 1945 and has approximately 60,000 members.
Michal Smola is a Czech orienteering competitor, silver medalist from the world championships, and junior world champion. He became Junior World Champion in the short distance in Nove Mesto na Morave in 2000, and with the Czech team in relay in 2000 and in 2001. His best achievement by September 2009 is silver medal in the middle distance at the 2008 World Orienteering Championship in Olomouc.
Ruslan Gritsan is a Russian competitor and multiple world champion in both ski-orienteering and mountain bike orienteering.
Troy de Haas is an Australian tower running, mountain running and orienteering competitor.
Eskil Kinneberg is a Norwegian orienteer. In addition to winning individual gold medal at the Orienteering World Championships and individual silver medal at the European championships, he has won eight medals with Norwegian teams in the relays at the world and European championships, including several victories.
Emil Svensk is a Swedish orienteering competitor. His achievements include winning gold medals both in the World Orienteering Championships and the European Orienteering Championships.
