Jaswinder Bhalla (born 4 May 1960) is an Indian actor and comedian who works in Punjabi cinema. He started his professional career as a comedian in 1988 with Chhankata 88 and became an actor with film Dulla Bhatti. He is best known for his comedy series Chhankata and comedy roles in various Punjabi films. He is famous for always using taglines in his movies, and bringing a comic touch to movies through them. He also performs in stage acts and has done tours of Canada and Australia for his stage show Naughty Baba in Town. [1]
Bhalla was born on 4 May 1960 in the city of Ludhiana. [2] His father Master Bahadur Singh Bhalla was a primary school teacher in village Barmalipur. He got his basic education from Senior Secondary School Doraha.[ citation needed ]
He did his B.Sc. and M.Sc. from Punjab Agricultural University, [3] and his Ph.D. from Chaudhary Charan Singh Post Graduate College, Meerut. He began his career as an Assistant Professor in the PAU, and was serving as a Professor and Head, Department of Extension Education when he retired from active service on 31 May 2020 [4] [5]
Bhalla and two of his schoolmates got selected for All India Radio in 1975. As a student at Punjab Agricultural University, Bhalla had done comedy performances in university programmes. He started his professional career in 1988 along with co-performer Bal Mukund Sharma with audio cassette Chhankata 1988. [6] Bal Mukund Sharma and Bhalla were classmates in Punjab Agriculture University. [7] Word chhankata originated from the college level annual show performed by Bhalla and Sharma in PAU. They were noticed by Doordarshan Kendra, Jalandhar while performing in Professor Mohan Singh Mela (cultural festival) on the personal backing of Punjabi author Jagdev Singh Jassowal. He has released over 27 audio and video albums of the Chhankata series. Apart from Bal Mukund Sharma, Neelu Sharma has also been part of the Chhankata series. Starting with Chhankata 2002, the series was also released in the form of video cassettes. [8]
In his Chhankata series, he portrayed many characters carefully chosen from all walks of Punjabi society. One of the main characters is Chacha (Uncle) Chatar Singh, who is an old villager and talks about Punjab's politics, differences between rural and urban life, and tells jokes from all walks of life. Another character he portrays is Bhana, a youngster from Chatar Singh's village who has emigrated to the USA and appears in the Chhankata as NRI. JB, another character portrayed by Bhalla, is the son of Chatar Singh. Another notable character is Taya Fumhan Singh.
Bhalla has worked in Punjabi movies like Mahaul Theek Hai , Jija Ji, Jihne Mera Dil Luteya , Power cut , Kabaddi Once Again , Apan Phir Milange, Mel Kara De Rabba, Carry On Jatta , Jatt and Juliet , Jatt Airways. In some Punjabi films, he always speak with different Takia Klams (catchphrase) Such as Mein Taa Bhannduu Bullan Naal Akhrote, Je Chandigarh Dhaijoo Pinda Warga Taa Rehjooo or Dhillon Ne Kaalaa Cot Aiven Ni Payeya. He said through his art, he highlights social evils like female foeticide, drugs and unemployment.
In his album Chhankata 2003, he was alleged by certain ragi jathas of making mockery of them and raised strong objections to his album. An apology was issued by the artists and producer of the album. [9] His 2009 album Mithe Pochey also faced ire of Nambardaars of various villages in Punjab for his satire on them. [10] He was allegedly assaulted by Punjab government official due to his satire on government. [11] [12] [13]
He is married to Parmdeep Bhalla who is a Fine Arts teacher. He has a son named Pukhraj Bhalla, who is studying B.tech in Audio Visuals from Punjabi University, Patiala. Pukhraj has also appeared in some of the Chhankata cassettes since 2002 and has performed excellent roles in some Punjabi films as well. He has a daughter named Ashpreet Kaur who is married in Norway. [14] He is good friends with Balmukund Sharma, who appears as Bhateej in the Chhankata series.

Punjabi cinema refers to the Punjabi-language film industry centered around the Indian state of Punjab, and based in Amritsar, Ludhiana and Mohali.
Diljit Dosanjh is an Indian singer, songwriter, actor, film producer and television personality. He works in Punjabi Music and subsequently in Punjabi and Hindi cinema. Dosanjh entered Social 50 chart by Billboard in 2020. He is featured in various music charts including Canadian Albums Chart, UK Asian chart by Official Charts Company and New Zealand Hot Singles. His movies, including Jatt & Juliet 2, Punjab 1984, Sajjan Singh Rangroot and Honsla Rakh are among the highest grossing Punjabi films in history.
Lion of Punjab is an Indian Punjabi action film starring Diljit Dosanjh, making his debut as an actor. It is also the debut Punjabi movie of Bollywood director Guddu Dhanoa. Carry On Jatta is a 2012 Indian Punjabi comedy film directed by Smeep Kang and starring Gippy Grewal, and Mahie Gill. The film released on 27 July 2012. This film was remade in Odia in 2015 as Pilata Bigidigala, in Telugu in 2016 as Eedo Rakam Aado Rakam, in Bangladesh (Bengali) in 2017 as Dhat Teri Ki and in Bengali (India) in 2019 as Jamai Badal. The movie was reported to be loosely inspired by the 2004 Hindi movie Kuch Toh Gadbad Hain.
Jatt & Juliet is an Indian Punjabi-language romantic comedy film directed by Anurag Singh and produced by Darshan Singh Grewal and Gunbir Singh Sidhu. The film stars Diljit Dosanjh opposite Neeru Bajwa. It was released to theaters on 29 June 2012. Upon release, the film became a massive blockbuster at the box office and also won multiple awards at the PTC Punjabi Film Awards 2013 including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress. The film also spawned a sequel the following year, titled Jatt & Juliet 2 featuring most of the same cast and crew. The sequel also broke records at the box office, and ended up becoming the highest-grossing Punjabi film ever. It was remade in Bengali in 2014 as Bangali Babu English Mem.

Jatt & Juliet 2 is a 2013 Indian Punjabi romance comedy film directed by Anurag Singh. The film is a sequel to the 2012 blockbuster Jatt & Juliet, however not directly or story-wise. Actors Diljit Dosanjh and Neeru Bajwa reprise their roles from the previous film in the sequel amongst other characters. The film released on 28 June 2013, almost a year after the release of the prequel, and received a positive response at the box office. Jatt & Juliet 2 went on to become the highest-grossing Punjabi film ever, thus beating the record previously held by the first Jatt & Juliet film. Jatt and Juliet 2 is the first ever Punjabi movie to be released on Blu-ray. The movie was remade in Bengali in 2018 as Inspector Notty K.
Sardaarji is a 2015 Indian Punjabi fantasy horror film and comedy film directed by Rohit Jugraj, and starring Diljit Dosanjh, Mandy Takhar and Neeru Bajwa in lead roles. The trailer of the film was released on 18 May 2015. Sardaar Ji is one of the first fantasy films to be made in Punjabi cinema. It released on 26 June 2015, and had the biggest opening ever for a Punjabi film in Punjab.
Karamjit Anmol is an Indian actor, comedian, singer and film producer active in the Punjabi entertainment industry. He has worked in Punjabi movies including Laavaan Phere and Carry on Jatta 2. He has also acted in the comedy plays "OMG !! Oh My God" and "Naughty Baba In Town" which were staged in Canada, America, New Zealand and Australia. He received the "PTC Best Comedian Of The Year" award in 2017 for Main Teri Tu Mera. Karamjit Anmol is nephew of great punjabi folk singer Kuldeep Manak. Manak sahab is his maternal uncle.
Ranjit Singh Bajwa known professionally as Ranjit Bawa, is an Indian singer and actor associated with Punjabi language music and films. He rose to fame from his single "Jatt Di Akal" from his debut in the 2015 album, Mitti Da Bawa which was awarded the "Best World Album" award in the 2015 Brit Asia TV Music Awards. He has also received "PTC Best Folk oriented Song Award" in 2013 for his Song in 2013, Jatt Di Akal. His numorous songs including 'Yaari Chandigarh Waliye' and 'Impress' peaked on UK Asian Music Chart and UK Punjabi Music Charts. He made his film debut in playing the title role in Toofan Singh, a semi-biographical film about the 1980s Punjabi activist Shaheed Bhai Jugraj Singh Toofan.
