Jerry Montgomery (born September 19, 1979) is an American football coach and former player. He is currently the defensive line coach for the New England Patriots.
Montgomery played his high school football at Virgin Valley High School in Mesquite, Nevada, where he was a Street & Smith All-American and the Nevada State Player of the Year in 1997. [1] Montgomery was also a member of the state basketball championship team as a junior. [2]
Montgomery was a four-year starter for the Iowa Hawkeyes football team from 1998-2002 under head coaches Hayden Fry and Kirk Ferentz. He concluded his college career in the Hula Bowl All-Star Game at the completion of his senior season. Montgomery graduated from Iowa with a bachelor's degree in African American Studies in 2002. [1]
Following his college playing career, he went to training camp with the New Orleans Saints in 2002, but was released before the season. Montgomery later played in the Arena Football League with the Chicago Rush, Colorado Crush, and Las Vegas Gladiators from 2003-2005. [1]
Montgomery began a career in coaching while he was playing in the Arena League, working as an assistant at Iowa City West High School and North Iowa Area Community College. He later served as a graduate assistant at Northern Iowa in 2006, before being promoted to full-time defensive line coach for the 2007 and 2008 seasons.
In 2009, Montgomery moved west to serve as defensive line coach at Wyoming on the first staff of Dave Christensen, staying through the 2010 season.
In January 2011, Montgomery briefly served as defensive tackles coach at Indiana under head coach Kevin Wilson. [3] However, he was soon hired away by Michigan and new head coach Brady Hoke in February 2011. Montgomery served as defensive line coach for the Wolverines for the 2011 and 2012 seasons. With the Wolverines, Montgomery served as the chief recruiter for 5-star commitments Derrick Green and Ondre Pipkins [4]
From 2013-2014, Montgomery served as the defensive line coach at Oklahoma under head coach Bob Stoops, earning a salary of $325,000 in 2013 and $380,000 in 2014. He was promoted after two seasons with Oklahoma to co-defensive coordinator on January 6, 2015, where he was expected to lead the defense alongside Mike Stoops. [5]
His tenure as co-defensive coordinator with the Sooners was brief. [6] On February 12, 2015, the Green Bay Packers of the NFL confirmed that they hired Montgomery, giving him the title of "defensive front assistant". [7] Montgomery stated that the Packers "offered an unbelievable opportunity" to pursue his dream of coaching in the National Football League. [8]
In January 2018, Montgomery was hired as the assistant head coach and defensive line coach on Jimbo Fisher's staff at Texas A&M. [9] Later in January 2018, Montgomery instead opted to remain with the Packers as the defensive line coach on the reorganized staff of head coach Mike McCarthy. Montgomery had spent 2 weeks recruiting on behalf of Texas A&M [10] On March 17, 2022, Montgomery was promoted to defensive line/running game coordinator.
On February 3, 2024, it was announced that Montgomery would not remain with the Green Bay Packers. On February 5, 2024, it was reported that Montgomery was hired by the New England Patriots as their defensive line coach. [11]
Ernest Dominic Capers is an American football coach who is a senior defensive assistant for the Carolina Panthers of the National Football League (NFL). He was previously the inaugural head coach of the Panthers and the Houston Texans for four seasons each. Capers is the only head coach to lead two different NFL expansion teams during their first seasons.
Robert Anthony Stoops is an American football coach who is the head coach for the Arlington Renegades of the United Football League (UFL). He was the head football coach at the University of Oklahoma from 1999 through the 2016 season, and on an interim basis during the 2021 Alamo Bowl. He led the Oklahoma Sooners to a record of 191–48 over his career. His 2000 Oklahoma Sooners football team won the 2001 Orange Bowl, which served as the BCS National Championship Game, and earned a consensus national championship. Since 2020, Stoops has been a head coach with the XFL, coaching the Renegades in 2020 and has been re-signed for 2023. Stoops' Renegades won the XFL Championship in 2023.
Jerome Monahan Burns was an American college and professional football coach. He played in college for the Michigan Wolverines before becoming a coach. He was the head coach for the Iowa Hawkeyes from 1961 to 1965, compiling a record of 16–27–2, and for the Minnesota Vikings of the National Football League (NFL) from 1986 to 1991, tallying a mark of 52–43 in the regular season, and 3–3 in the postseason. Between his head coaching stints Burns was a defensive assistant (1965–1967) for the Green Bay Packers, helping the team win Super Bowls I and II, and Offensive Coordinator (1968–1985) for the Minnesota Vikings, where he coached the team to four Super Bowl appearances.
Michael Joseph Stoops is an American football coach and former player, who is the inside linebackers coach at the University of Kentucky. Stoops also served as the head football coach at the University of Arizona from 2003 until his firing during the 2011 season. He previously served as an assistant football coach at the University of Iowa, Kansas State University, and University of Oklahoma. He is the younger brother of Bob Stoops, the former head coach of the Oklahoma Sooners football program, and the older brother of Mark Stoops, head coach of the Kentucky Wildcats football program. He returned to Oklahoma as the defensive coordinator in 2012. He served in the position until he was fired on October 7, 2018. After spending time at the University of Alabama as an analyst, he spent one season as the defensive coordinator of the Florida Atlantic Owls in 2021.
Jim Bates is a former American football coach in the National Football League (NFL), most recently serving as defensive coordinator of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He primarily ran a 4–3 scheme, using fast, undersized linebackers. Bates served as interim head coach for the Miami Dolphins during the 2004 NFL season.
Adrian William Klemm is an American football coach and former offensive tackle who was most recently the offensive line coach for the New England Patriots of the National Football League (NFL). He previously served as the offensive line coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2021.
Jeff Jagodzinski is an American football coach and former player. He was previously the offensive coordinator at Georgia State University. Jagodzinski served as he head football coach at Boston College in 2007 and 2008, leading the Eagles to a record of 20–8 and consecutive appearances in the ACC Championship Game. In 2010, he was the head coach of the United Football League's Omaha Nighthawks.
James Caldwell is an American football coach who is a senior assistant for the Carolina Panthers of the National Football League (NFL). He previously served as the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts from 2009 to 2011 and Detroit Lions from 2014 to 2017. As an assistant coach, Caldwell was the assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach for the Colts team that won Super Bowl XLI and the offensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens team that won Super Bowl XLVII.
Roy Lee Manning Jr., is an American football coach and former player who most recently served as the outside linebackers coach, nickel coach, and assistant defensive head coach for the USC Trojans football. Coach Manning played high school football at Saginaw High School in Saginaw, Michigan. He was a part of a state championship team that featured 3 other professional football players including Charles Rogers.Coach Manning last served as cornerbacks coach at the University of Oklahoma. He played linebacker in the National Football League for three seasons. Manning was originally signed by the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted free agent in 2005. He also played for the Houston Texans, Buffalo Bills, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Cincinnati Bengals during his NFL career. Manning played college football at Michigan. He won the 2004 Roger Zatkoff Award as the University of Michigan's football team's top linebacker.
Michael John Trgovac is an American football coach and a former player. He previously served as the defensive line coach for the Green Bay Packers, Carolina Panthers, Washington Redskins, and Philadelphia Eagles and Las Vegas Raiders. Trgovac was a member of the Packers' coaching staff that led the team to the NFL championship in Super Bowl XLV in 2011. Born in Youngstown, Ohio, Trgovac played college football as a middle guard for the University of Michigan from 1977 to 1980. He received All-Big Ten Conference honors in both 1979 and 1980. After graduating from Michigan, Trgovac held various college coaching positions from 1984 to 1994.
Joseph Anthony Philbin is a senior offensive assistant for the Las Vegas Raiders. He served as the offensive line coach for the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League (NFL). He was the head coach of the Miami Dolphins, a position he held from 2012 to 2015. Philbin was also the offensive coordinator of the Green Bay Packers from 2007 to 2011, helping them win Super Bowl XLV over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Most recently, Philbin served as interim head coach of the Packers for the final four games of the 2018 season after serving as the offensive coordinator for the first part of the season.

He played college football as a linebacker at Oklahoma State University.
Ed Donatell is an American football coach. He was a defensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers, Atlanta Falcons, Washington Huskies, Denver Broncos, and Minnesota Vikings. His son Tom Donatell is also an NFL coach.
Benjamin Lee McAdoo is an American football coach, currently serving as a senior offensive assistant of the New England Patriots in the National Football League (NFL). McAdoo was most notably the head coach of the New York Giants from 2016 to 2017, after serving as their offensive coordinator the previous two years under former head coach Tom Coughlin. He was fired from that position on December 4, 2017 following a 2–10 start, along with benching longtime starting quarterback Eli Manning. At the time of his termination, his 28 regular season games were the fewest by a Giants coach since 1930. Prior to working for the Patriots, McAdoo had also served as an assistant coach for several college football teams, as well as for the New Orleans Saints, the San Francisco 49ers, Green Bay Packers, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Carolina Panthers.
