Construction started on December 10, 2018.[8][9] The hall was expected to be completed and ready for occupancy by August 2020.[8] On Friday, September 6, 2019, the new Residence Hall's name was announced to be Johnson Family Hall.[1][9] Todd, Susan, Matthew and Hilary Johnson of Duluth, Minnesota, donated $20 million. The Johnson family members are members of Notre Dame’s Cavanaugh Council, Badin Guild and Boldly Notre Dame campaign cabinet. Matthew and Hilary are also Notre Dame alumni.[1]

In the spring of 2019, the university administration gave enrolled female students the option to move into Pangborn Hall, which at the time was functioning as a swing dorm for halls undergoing renovation, to gain a guaranteed spot in the new residence hall for the 2020-2021 year. The new community formed in the fall of 2019, led by rector Amanda Springstead, and was known as the Pangborn-Johnson Community (nicknamed PB&J).[10] On September 8 2019, after the announcement of the hall's new name, the community took group hall photos both outside of both Pangborn and the under construction Johnson Family Hall.[11]
Construction of the hall was completed in August 2020, in time for the students to move in for the fall semester, both those of the PB&J community and freshmen and new transfers.[11][12] The dorm was opened during the COVID-19 pandemic, during which campus life as subject to several restrictions and regulations.[7] The chapel, dedicated to St. Theresa of Calcutta, was dedicated on September 6, 2020 by bishop Kevin C. Rhodes.[13][14][12] For the hall's first holiday season, the Johnson family gave each resident of Pangborn a “Johnson Family Hall” quilt as a welcome gift and a way to foster community bonding.[10] These blankets have been gifted to new Johnson Family residents every year since.
In January 2022, the building received LEED gold certification due to its environmental friendly construction and design features..[15][16] The building uses geothermal energy through geothermal wells that were added during its construction.[17][18] The environmentally friendly processes and strategies used in its construction also gained it an honorable mention at the 2021 U.S. Green Building Council Indiana Leadership Awards in the Green Building of the Year New Construction category.[16][19]
In addition to the rector and the priest in residence, staples of the Notre Dame residential system, Johnson Family also houses resident assistants and assistant rectors.
Description
Johnson Family Hall is a four-story 68,000 square feet large and hosts 225 undergraduate women. Designed by Mackey Mitchell Architects, it is built in modern collegiate gothic architecture in the campus tradition, and is fashioned along the line of projects by Kervick and Fagan and Maginnis & Walsh.[20][4][5][21] Among the features it offers its residents are a community chapel, a formal reading room, study spaces, lounges, kitchens on every floor. The first floor is mostly dedicated to communal spaces while the basement hosts food options, a gym, laundry and storage areas. Rooms come in both singles, doubles, and quads. The space also houses apartments for the rector, priest-in-residence and faculty-in-residence and the rest of the hall staff.[8][22]
Notre Dame has an undergraduate hall system which blends the residential college system and the house system. All first-year students are placed in one of the 32 halls upon enrollment, and students rarely switch halls. Each hall has its own spirit, tradition, mascot, sport teams, events, dances and reputation.[23][24] Johnson Family Hall's mascot is the valkyrie, while its colors are navy and light blue.[25] Johnson Family Hall host two signature events.The first is the Johnson Family Feud-- a Notre Dame rendition of the hit show Family Feud where dorms compete for the Golden Valkyrie.[26] The second is "Ride of the Valks" a tradition of running through the Notre Dame Library Reflection Pool early in the morning of the first home game.

Alumni Hall is one of the 32 Residence Halls on the campus of the University of Notre Dame and one of the 16 male dorms. It is located on South Quad adjacent to "Main Circle", across from the law school building, and it hosts 234 undergraduates.
O'Neill Family Hall is one of the 32 residence halls on the campus of the University of Notre Dame and one of the 16 male dorms. Built in 1996, the dormitory was funded by the O'Neill family from Midland, Texas.
Sorin Hall, nicknamed Sorin College, is the oldest of the 32 residence halls on the campus of the University of Notre Dame and one of the 17 male dorms. It is named after Fr. Edward Sorin, C.S.C., the founder of Notre Dame. Sorin is located directly north of Walsh Hall and is directly south of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. Sorin houses 143 undergraduate students. Sorin Hall is, along with other buildings on the Main Quad of Notre Dame, on the National Register of Historic Places. Sorin Hall was the first Notre Dame residential hall established as such, although St. Edward's Hall is housed in an older building.
Walsh Hall is one of the 32 Residence Halls on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. Walsh is located on Main ("God") Quad, directly south of Sorin Hall and is directly north of the Knights of Columbus Building. It was built in 1909 and the architect was William J. Brinkmann. Among other buildings on the Main Quad of Notre Dame, Walsh Hall is on the National Register of Historic Places. The coat of arms is taken from the Walsh family.
Dillon Hall is one of the 32 Residence Halls on the campus of the University of Notre Dame and one of the 17 male dorms. It is located directly west of Alumni Hall, which it acquired in 1988, and is directly adjacent to South Dining Hall on the west. Dillon was built in 1931 and renovated for the 2020-2021 school year and many of the first floor rooms were converted to living and study areas. It is named after Patrick Dillon, CSC, the second president of the university. The coat of arms is taken from the Dillon family. Together with other historic structures of the university, it is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Badin Hall is one of the 32 Residence Halls on the campus of the University of Notre Dame and one of the 14 female dorms. The smallest residence hall on campus, it is located on South Quad, between Howard Hall and the Coleman-Morse center. It was built in 1897 and hosted the Manual Labor School until 1917 before being converted into a men's dorm. During World War II, it was part of the United States Naval Reserve Midshipmen's School, and in 1972 it became one of the first two residence halls at Notre Dame to host women.
Lyons Hall is one of the 32 Residence Halls on the campus of the University of Notre Dame and one of the 14 female dorms. It is located on South Quad, and constitutes the "Golden Coast" with Morrissey Hall and Howard Hall. Built in 1925-1927, it is dedicated to professor Joseph Lyons, and hosts 203 undergraduates. The coat of arms features a golden lion on a black field, representing an example of canting arms. Its arch overlooking St. Mary's lake is a campus landmark. Along with other buildings on Notre Dame's campus, it is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Howard Hall is one of the 32 Residence Halls on the campus of the University of Notre Dame and one of the 14 female dorms. It is located north of South Dining Hall on University of Notre Dame's South Quad, and is immediately surrounded by Badin Hall on the east, Morrissey Manor on the west, and Bond Hall on the north. Built in 1924–1925, it is dedicated to Timothy Edward Howard, and hosts 145 undergraduates. The coat of arms is based on that of the Howard family adapted to fit Howard Hall, changed to match those of the hall, and the lions were substituted with ducks.
There are currently 32 undergraduate residence halls at the University of Notre Dame, including 31 active residence halls and Zahm Hall, which serves as a transition dorm when residence halls undergo construction. Each residence hall is single-sex, with 17 all-male residence halls and 15 all-female residence halls. Morrissey Hall is one of the 32 Residence Halls on the campus of the University of Notre Dame and one of the 16 male dorms. Built in 1925-1926, its architects were Vincent Fagan and Francis Kervick. Along with other buildings on Notre Dame's campus, it is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is referred to as Morrissey Manor by its residents.
Zahm Hall, also known as Zahm House, is a University of Notre Dame residence hall. The building was constructed in 1937 and is located directly east of St. Edward's Hall and is directly west of North Quad. Starting with the 2021-2022 school year, Zahm Hall hosts communities of residents whose halls are being renovated, starting with Sorin Hall.

It is located on Mod Quad, between Knott Hall and McCourtney Hall. Built in 2016 together with its twin dorm Dunne Hall, it was the first dorm built since Ryan Hall in 2009. The coat of arms is taken form the Flaherty family, with the bears replacing the Flaherty dragons.
Dunne Hall is one of the newest of the 32 Residence Halls on the campus of the University of Notre Dame and one of the 16 male dorms. It is located on East Quad, between Pasquerilla East Hall and Johnson Family Hall. Built in 2016 together with its twin dorm Flaherty Hall, it was the first dorm built since Ryan Hall in 2009.
Baumer Hall is one of the 32 residence halls at the University of Notre Dame. It located on West Quad, south of Keough Hall and west of Ryan Hall, on the McGlinn fields. It is the newest men's residence hall, built in 2019, after a donation from John and Mollie Baumer.
Breen-Phillips hall is one of the 32 Residence Halls on the campus of the University of Notre Dame and one of the 14 female dorms. Breen-Phillips is on North Quad, between Farley Hall, Geddes Hall, and the Hesburgh Library. Established in 1939, it hosts 200 students.
Carroll Hall is one of the 33 Residence Halls on the campus of the University of Notre Dame and one of the 16 male dorms. Carroll is located on the shores of St. Mary's Lake, and is the smallest of the residence halls, housing around 100 undergraduates.
