K. Gopal (born 10 November 1959) is an Indian doctor and politician. He obtained a M.B.B.S degree from Thanjavur Medical College. Gopal was a Member of the Legislative Assembly from Nannilam 1991 to 1996. In 2014 he was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Nagapattinam (Lok Sabha constituency) as an Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidate in the 2014 election. He won the seat with 46.06% and was elected Member of Parliament for Nagapattinam (Lok Sabha constituency) for 16th Lok Sabha. [2]
Gopal did his schooling from a government school in Nagapattinam district. He obtained an M.B.B.S degree from Thanjavur Medical College.He completed his post graduate diploma in diabetology from Rajah Muthiah Medical College in Chidambaram. [3]
He married Sangamithra,daughter of Indian National Congress veteran MLA V.Vedaiyan. [4]
Gopal was a Member of the Legislative Assembly from Nannilam 1991 to 1996. [5] He was defeated in the 1996 Assembly elections in the same constituency.The AIAMDK fielded him as its candidate in the Nagapattinam Lok Sabha constituency in 1998,when he again suffered defeat to M. Selvarasu of CPI. [6] He practised medicine and was involved in politics simultaneously for a few years. The Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam announced him as a candidate for Thiruthuraipoondi (state assembly constituency) in the 2011 Tamil Nadu legislative assembly elections but soon withdrew the candidacy before the elections in favor for then alliance party Communist Party of India. [7] [8] In 2014 he was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Nagapattinam (Lok Sabha constituency) as an Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidate in the 2014 election. He won the seat with 46.06% and was elected Member of Parliament for Nagapattinam (Lok Sabha constituency) for 16th Lok Sabha. [9]

Gopal has on multiple occasions brought up the crimes committed against SC/ST communities in the parliament and has discussed welfare of Backward Classes,Scheduled Castes,differently abled persons with the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.The government tabled the SC/ST amendment Bill in Lok Sabha,it was unanimously passed by the House. The Rajya Sabha passed the constitutional amendment Bill granting constitutional status to National Commission of Backward Classes. Gopal said "a comprehensive law on the lines of US and UK to declare caste panchayats unlawful." Gopal comes down heavily on cow vigilantism,so-called honour killing,especially Bhima Koregaon violence and Una flogging row. He said "It is unfortunate such incidents are happening when India will be celebrating her 72nd Independence Day," [12] [13] He has discussed with the Indian council of agricultural research regarding the welfare of women in agriculture in order to generate trained women in Agriculture field with the capability to carry out research in entrepreneur oriented areas.He had met and discussed with the then railway minister to re-route Chemmozhi express (Mannargudi-Coimbatore),(coimbatore-mannargudi),(mannargudi-manamadurai) to be operated from Tiruvarur. The Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam is an Indian regional political party in the state of Tamil Nadu. It is a Dravidian party founded by the former leader of the opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Vijayakant (Captain) at Madurai on 14 September 2005. The party was led by its founder until 14 December 2023 from its date of founding. From 14 December 2023,the DMDK is led by Vijayakant's wife Premallatha Vijayakant as general secretary of the party. The party served as the main opposition party in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from 27 May 2011 to 21 February 2016. R. Kamaraj is an Indian politician from the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) party. He has been a member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from Nannilam constituency since 2011 and is the Minister for Food of the Government of Tamil Nadu. Prior to his state assembly role,he represented Tamil Nadu as a member of Parliament of India in the Rajya Sabha,the upper house of the Indian Parliament.
Subburaman Thirunavukkarasar is an Indian politician. He was the State President of Tamil Nadu Congress Committee till 2 February 2019 and former secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) of the Indian National Congress (INC) party. His introduction to politics in 1977 was facilitated by former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu,M. G. Ramachandran. Ramachandran founded the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) in 1972 and was facing his first elections for the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election in 1977. He identified Thirunavukkarasar,a lawyer by profession,to contest the Aranthangi assembly constituency. Thirunavukkarasar won the seat,aged 27,and was elected as the Deputy Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. He continued in that capacity till 1980. Subsequently,he served as Tamil Nadu state minister from 1980 to 1987 in the MGR cabinet,holding portfolios that included Industries,Housing Board,Excise and Handlooms. Later,he became a member of the Lok Sabha –the lower house of the Parliament of India –when he won the erstwhile Pudukottai Lok Sabha constituency. He served as Union Minister of state for shipping and later for telecommunications and information technology.
Munisamy Thambidurai is an Indian politician who served as the Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha and leader of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) in the Lok Sabha,the lower house of the Indian Parliament. By-elections to nine state assembly constituencies were held in Tamil Nadu,in four separate phases. The election for Thirumangalam was held on 9 January and for Bargur,Thondamuthur,Ilaiyangudi,Cumbum,and Srivaikuntam constituencies on 18 August. Also,the election took place for Vandavasi and Tiruchendur constituency on 19 December 2009 and finally for Pennagaram constituency on 27 March 2010. Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) defeated All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) in Thirumangalam in the first phase and kept the winning momentum in the following general election.

On 17 June 1979 a by-election was held in for the Nagapattinam seat in the Lok Sabha. The by-election was called after the murder of the incumbent Communist Party of India parliamentarian S.G. Murugaiyan,one of three prominent communist leaders killed in the state of Tamil Nadu in 1979. The Nagapattinam constituency was reserved for Scheduled Castes.
Sithamalli Govindan Murugaiyan,usually called S.G. Murugaiyan,was a communist politician in Tamil Nadu,India. S.G. Murugaiyan was a prominent leader of struggles of the oppressed sections of people in Mannargudi taluk,and became the first person from the Scheduled Castes in the state to be elected as revenue block chairman. In 1977 he was elected Member of Parliament. Two years later he was assassinated.
