KKXS (96.1 FM, "96 KTO") is a commercial radio station licensed in Shingletown, California, broadcasting to the Shasta & Tehama County areas. KKXS airs an oldies format and is an affiliate of The True Oldies Channel. Until 2024, it was the region's flagship station for San Francisco Giants, San Francisco 49ers and San Jose Sharks.
KKXS was once the home for Red 96.1 (KBHX) (now on 103.1 and 93.3) from 2001 until 2003, then it was the home of Kicks 96, a country station which was a more classic country alternative to Q-97 until 2005. The station was an affiliate of Broadcast Architecture's Smooth Jazz Network until March 1, 2010, when KKXS switched to ESPN Radio. [1] [2] The station also broadcast live video webstreams of Shasta College Knights football.
On February 13, 2024 (by coincidence, doing so just two days after the 49ers' loss in Super Bowl LVIII), the station abruptly dropped the sports talk format and flipped to oldies, joining The True Oldies Channel network, as "96 KTO, Redding's True Oldies", immediately applying to change callsigns to KYTO to match. KSJS (90.5 MHz) is a college radio station that broadcasts 24 hours a day from the campus of San Jose State University in San Jose, California, United States. The brainchild of Professor Clarence Flick, it went on the air on February 11, 1963, with only 85 watts of power. The studio is located in Hugh Gillis Hall, easily accessible to RTVF majors. Originally, its transmitting antenna was installed atop the Walquist Library Building on campus, but broadcasting range was adversely affected due to the nearby Bank of America Building's superior height. Today, however, its transmitter atop Coyote Peak broadcasts 1,500 watts, allowing the station to be heard by the entire Santa Clara Valley and much of the San Francisco Peninsula. Currently, the station features five musical formats: urban, electronic, alternative rock, rock en Español, and jazz. In addition, KSJS has student-produced broadcasts of San Jose State Spartans sports teams, including football, basketball, and baseball.
