The Mediterranean Games is a multi-sport event organised by the International Committee of Mediterranean Games (CIJM). It is held every four years among athletes from countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea in Africa, Asia and Europe. The first Mediterranean Games were held in 1951 in Alexandria, Egypt, while the most recent games were held in 2022 in Oran, Algeria.

The 1975 Mediterranean Games, officially known as the VII Mediterranean Games, and commonly known as Algiers 1975, were the 7th Mediterranean Games. The Games were held in Algiers, Algeria, from 23 August to 6 September 1975, where 2,444 athletes from 15 countries participated. There were a total of 160 medal events from 19 different sports.
The 1987 Mediterranean Games, officially known as the X Mediterranean Games, and commonly known as Latakia 1987, were the 10th Mediterranean Games. The Games were held in Latakia, Syria, from 11 to 25 September 1987, where 1,996 athletes from 18 countries participated. There were a total of 162 medal events from 19 different sports.
The 1991 Mediterranean Games, officially known as the XI Mediterranean Games, and commonly known as Athens 1991, were the 11th Mediterranean Games. The Games were held in Athens, Greece, from 28 June to 12 July 1991, where 2,762 athletes from 18 countries participated. There were a total of 214 medal events from 24 different sports.
At the 1993 Mediterranean Games, the athletics events were held in Narbonne, Languedoc-Roussillon, France from 17–24 June 1993. A total of 36 events were contested, of which 20 by male and 16 by female athletes.
The 2022 Mediterranean Games, officially known as the XIX Mediterranean Games and commonly known as Oran 2022, was an international multi-sport event held from 25 June to 6 July 2022 in Oran, Algeria. Oran was announced as the host city at the ICMG General Assembly in Pescara, Italy, on 15 August 2015. 3,390 athletes took part in the games.
Gymnastics is one of the sports at the quadrennial Mediterranean Games competition. It has been a sport in the program of the Mediterranean Games since its inception in 1951. Two disciplines have been contested: Men's and Women's Artistic Gymnastics and Rhythmic Gymnastics, exclusively for women.

Sailing is one of the sports at the quadrennial Mediterranean Games competition. It has been a sport in the program of the Mediterranean Games since the event's second edition in 1955.
Algeria is scheduled to compete at the 2022 Mediterranean Games in Oran, Algeria over 10 days from 25 June to 5 July 2022 with delegation of 522 persons, including 193 men and 136 women. The country finished the Games with 53 medals amongst all nations: 20 gold, 17 silver, and 16 bronze. This is the best participation in the history of Algeria breaking the number of the 2001 Mediterranean Games, The sports with the most medals were Athletics, Karate and Boxing, The first medals were in Karate where Algeria won six medals including four golds by Cylia Ouikene, Louiza Abouriche and Chaima Midi for women's and Oussama Zaid for men's. In Boxing Algeria participated with fifteen men's and women's boxers 13 of whom won medals including five golds through Jugurtha Ait Bekka, Roumaysa Boualam, Hadjila Khelif, Imane Khelif and Yahia Abdelli. The third specialty in terms of medals is strong Athletics with a total of 13 medals including five golds, by Bilal Tabti in 3000 m steeplechase, Yasser Triki in Triple jump, Bilel Afer in high jump, Djamel Sedjati in 800 m and finally the Men's 4×400 m relay team. In other sports participation was different and in Badminton duo Koceila Mammeri and Youcef Sabri Medel won a historic gold and the only one in this specialty by defeating the Spanish duo Luis Enrique Penalver Pereira and Pablo Abian Vicen. In the fencing Algeria won its first gold medal in history with Saoussen Boudiaf winning against Italian Rebecca Gargano. In Judo from which a lot was expected where did they suffice with four medals one of which was gold by Messaoud Redouane Dris in 73 kg, defeating Moroccan Hassan Doukkali by Ippon. In wrestling, swimming and weightlifting, he won one gold medal in each discipline: Bachir Sid Azara in men's Greco-Roman as for Ishak Ghaiou and Abdelkrim Ouakali get the silver medal. Jaouad Syoud in 200 m individual medley and Walid Bidani in snatch +102 kg and was satisfied with silver in Clean & Jerk.
