The Mediterranean Games is a multi-sport event organised by the International Committee of Mediterranean Games (CIJM). It is held every four years among athletes from countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea in Africa, Asia and Europe. The first Mediterranean Games were held in 1951 in Alexandria, Egypt, while the most recent games were held in 2022 in Oran, Algeria.
The 1951 Mediterranean Games, officially known as the I Mediterranean Games, and commonly known as Alexandria 1951, were the 1st Mediterranean Games. The Games were held for 15 days from 5 to 20 October 1951 in Alexandria, Egypt, where 734 athletes from 10 countries participated. There were a total of 13 different sports.
Egypt first participated at the Olympic Games in 1912, and has sent athletes to compete in most editions of the Summer Olympic since then. Along with Cambodia, Iraq and Lebanon, Egypt boycotted the 1956 Summer Olympics in protest of the tripartite Israeli, British, and French invasion of Egypt in the Suez War. However, the equestrian events for the 1956 Games were held in Stockholm, Sweden five months earlier, and three Egyptian riders competed there. Egypt withdrew from the 1976 Summer Olympics after three days of competition to join the broad African boycott in response to the participation of New Zealand, who still had sporting links with apartheid South Africa. Egypt also participated in the American-led boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics. Egypt's lone participation at the Winter Olympic Games was a single alpine skier in 1984.
Seif Eissa is an Egyptian Taekwondo practitioner & a Bronze medalist at the 2020 Summer Olympics. He won a bronze medal at the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China. He also earned a gold medal at the 2015 African Games in Gaborone.
Ahmed Abdelwahed is an Italian steeplechase runner of Egyptian origin who won a bronze medal at the 2018 Mediterranean Games. He competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics, in 3000 m steeplechase. His parents are from Egypt.
Silvia Semeraro is an Italian karateka. She won the gold medal in the women's kumite 68 kg event at the 2022 World Games held in Birmingham, United States. Semeraro also won the gold medal in the same event at the 2019 European Games held in Minsk, Belarus. She won the silver medal in the women's 68 kg event at the 2021 World Karate Championships held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Ghofrane Belkhir is a Tunisian weightlifter. She won the gold medal in the women's 55 kg event at the 2021 World Weightlifting Championships held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. She also won the gold medal in the 58 kg event at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics held in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Belkhir broke the world record for the snatch, clean and jerk, and total in the women's 59-kilogram class weightlifting event at the 5th International Solidarity Weightlifting Championship in Cairo, Egypt in December 2018. As of May 2020, she holds the African junior records for these events in the women's 59 kg weight class.
Neama Said Fahmi Said is an Egyptian weightlifter. She won the gold medal in the women's 64 kg event at the 2021 World Weightlifting Championships held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. In 2018, she won the silver medal in the girls' 58 kg event at the Summer Youth Olympics held in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Giana Mohamed Farouk Lotfy is an Egyptian karateka. She won one of the bronze medals in the women's 61 kg event at the 2020 Summer Olympics held in Tokyo, Japan. She is a two-time gold medalist in the women's kumite 61 kg event at the World Karate Championships. She is also a gold medalist in her event at the African Games, the Islamic Solidarity Games and the Mediterranean Games.
Amr Reda Ramadan Hussen is an Egyptian freestyle wrestler. He is a gold medalist at the 2023 African Games and a four-time medalist, including two gold medals, at the African Wrestling Championships. He also won the gold medal in his event at the 2022 Mediterranean Games.
Zeina Ibrahim Sharaf is an Egyptian artistic gymnast. She is the 2019 African Games team and uneven bars champion and the 2021 African all-around champion. She is also the 2022 African team and balance beam champion. She represented Egypt at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games and the 2020 Olympic Games.
Feryal Ashraf Abdelaziz is an Egyptian karateka and the first female Egyptian to have won a gold medal at the Olympic Games. She won the gold medal in the women's +61 kg event at the 2020 Summer Olympics held in Tokyo, Japan.
Menna Shaaban Okila is an Egyptian karateka. She won the silver medal in the women's +68 kg event at the 2021 World Karate Championships held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. She also won the gold medal in the women's team kumite event.
Ahlam Youssef is an Egyptian karateka. She won the gold medal in the women's 55 kg event at the 2021 World Karate Championships held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. She also won the gold medal in her event at the 2021 African Karate Championships held in Cairo, Egypt.
Anđelo Kvesić is a Croatian karateka. He is a two-time gold medalist in the men's +84 kg event at the European Karate Championships. He is a two-time bronze medalist in his event at the World Karate Championships and a two-time medalist, including gold, at the European Games.
The wrestling competition at the 2022 Mediterranean Games was held from 26 to 29 June at the EMEC Hall in Oran. The men's greco-Roman style 97 kg events were removed from the program because there was not enough participation. Albania, Algeria and San Marino won their first gold medals in the Wrestling at the Mediterranean Games.
