Route description

KY 335 begins near the local Dairy Queen at a junction with U.S. Route 31W (US 31W) on the north side of Cave City in Barren County around a half of a mile (0.8 km) south of the Caverna High School. KY 335 enters Hart County to run concurrently with KY 218 on the west side of Horse Cave. KY 335 departs KY 218 at a turn just short of Interstate 65 (I-65). It does not cross I-65, but it closely follows the freeway for a couple of miles. KY 335 passes by Kentucky Down Under and Kentucky Caverns, and then reaches its northern end at US 31W at Rowletts, just south of Munfordville.

U.S. Route 31W is the westernmost of two parallel routes for U.S. Route 31 from Nashville, Tennessee to Louisville, Kentucky. At one time, it split with U.S. Route 31E at Sellersburg, Indiana, crossing into nearby Louisville via the Kentucky & Indiana Terminal Bridge. Tennessee State Route 41 is its unsigned companion route in Tennessee.

Barren County, Kentucky County in the United States

Barren County is a county located in the U.S. state of Kentucky. As of the 2010 census, the population was 42,173. Its county seat is Glasgow. The county was founded on December 20, 1798, from parts of Warren and Green Counties. It was named for the Barrens, meadow lands that cover the northern third, though actually the soil is fertile.

Caverna High School is a small public high school located in Horse Cave, Kentucky. Built in 1950, the school is operated by the Caverna Independent Schools, one of only two school districts in Kentucky that are known to operate across county lines. In 1950, Horse Cave, located in Hart County; Cave City, in Barren County; and the Kentucky Board of Education held a meeting that approved the union of the two districts because of the low student numbers in both school systems. The actual construction of the new school did not start until 1951. Originally the school was going to be named, "Caberma." However, it was decided to stay with the name "Caverna."

History

KY 335 was the original alignment of the Dixie Highway (later US 31W) between Munfordville and Cave City until the 1930s.[ citation needed ]

The Dixie Highway was a United States automobile highway, first planned in 1914 to connect the US Midwest with the Southern United States. It was part of the National Auto Trail system, and grew out of an earlier Miami to Montreal highway. The final result is better understood as a network of connected paved roads, rather than one single highway. It was constructed and expanded from 1915 to 1929.
