Konongo Odumase Senior High School is a coeducational second-cycle institution at Konongo-Odumase in the Asante Akim Central District of the Ashanti Region of Ghana. [1] [2]
The school was started as Konongo Odumasi Secondary School but was renamed Konongo Odumase Senior High School around 2005 when the Kufuor government decided to redesignate all Senior Secondary Schools in the country as Senior High School. [3] [4] with twenty-one boys and five girls. This was as part of the "Accelerated Development Plan for Education" started after Kwame Nkrumah's Convention People's Party won the 1951 Gold Coast legislative election. [5] Two important teachers at the inception of the school were D. A. Agyei and B. Spio-Garbrah. The school moved to its current permanent site in 1963. The original school site was nicknamed Biafra, after the secessionist state of Biafra associated with the Nigerian Civil War. [5]
The school expanded to include a Sixth form, running Advanced level courses in the 1965 / 1966 academic year.[ citation needed ]
The school crest was designed by B. Spio Garbrah, the first headmaster and also an artist. The first head boy of the school was S. K Obeng [5]
In November 2016, there were riots among the students which led to the temporary closure of the school. This was because the students wanted the headmistress of the school to be removed. [6]
The crest of Konongo Odumase Senior High School (Great KOSS) features a rich combination of symbols representing the school’s heritage and values.
THE COLOURS: The yellow background symbolises the wealth of gold that Ghana possesses, reflecting prosperity and excellence. The green elements represent agriculture, highlighting the importance of farming in the nation’s development.
THE THREE CIRCLES: These interconnected circles signify unity, emphasising the collective strength and cooperation among students, staff, and the broader school community.
THE LION: Positioned at the base of the crest, the lion symbolises courage, strength, and leadership. It represents the fearless spirit of students and their resilience in academic and personal pursuits.
THE FARMING TOOLS (Akofena Symbol): This traditional symbol, which resembles crossed machetes, represents hard work, perseverance, and the agricultural foundation of the community. It also signifies readiness for challenges and the ability to overcome obstacles.
THE SCHOOL’S MOTTO: “Baanu YԐ”, meaning “Two are better than one,” underscores the values of teamwork, unity, and cooperation in achieving success. [7]
