Kottayam Central Diocese is one of the 30 dioceses of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. The diocese was created in 1982. This diocese is in the direct control of Catholicos of the East (Malankara Metropolitan). The head office is located in Devalokam Aramana, Kottayam.

History

Kottayam Central Diocese was created in 1982. This diocese was created by the partition of Kottayam Diocese in 1982. The diocese always under the control of Catholicos of the East (Malankara Metropolitan). [1] During the time of Baselios Mar Thoma Mathews I Kottayam diocese was divided and created this diocese in 1982 April 21. [1] The diocese was formed with parishes situated in Kottayam diocese but controlled directly by Malankara Metropolitan. Malankara Metropolitan is the Metropolitan of this diocese. The head office of this diocese is in Devalokam Aramana, head office of Malankara Orthodox Church. [1] [2]

In 1912 Malankara Church split into the Malankara Orthodox Church and the Jacobite Syrian Church on the question of the supreme head.Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church consider the Catholicos of the East residing in Kottayam as head while Jacobite Syrian Christian Church consider Patriarch of Antioch (head of Syriac Orthodox Church of the entire East) as the supreme head of the Church.

The Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church (MOSC) also known as the Indian Orthodox Church, is an autocephalous Oriental Orthodox church based in Kerala, India. The church serves India's Saint Thomas Christian population. According to tradition, the church originated in the missions of Thomas the Apostle in the 1st century.

Catholicos, plural Catholicoi, is a title used for the head of certain churches in some Eastern Christian traditions. The title implies autocephaly and in some cases it is the title of the head of an autonomous church. The word comes from ancient Greek καθολικός, pl. καθολικοί, derived from καθ' ὅλου from κατά and ὅλος, meaning "concerning the whole, universal, general"; it originally designated a financial or civil office in the Roman Empire. The name of the Catholic Church comes from the same word—however, the title "Catholicos" does not exist in its hierarchy.

Baselios Marthoma Mathews II was the primate of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. He was the 6th Catholicos of Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church and 19th Malankara Metropolitan.

Malankara Metropolitan A title in Indian Christianity

Malankara Metropolitan is an ecclesiastical title given to the head of the East Syriac Church of Hendo(India), previously by the Government of Travancore and Cochin in South India. This title was awarded by a proclamation from the King of Travancore and the King of Cochin. The Prime jurisdiction regarding the temporal, ecclesiastical and spiritual administration of the Malankara Church is vested in the Malankara Metropolitan. The Malankara Metropolitan is the legal custodian of the Kottayam Old Seminary, interest of vattipanam and Other Common Community properties of Malankara Church.

Baselios Marthoma Didymos I 20th Malankara Metropolitan and 7th Catholicos of the Malankara Church

Baselios Marthoma Didymus I born C. T. Thomas was the primate of the Malankara Orthodox Church from 2005 to 2010. He was the 7th Catholicos of the East since the Catholicate of the East was established India and the 20th Malankara Metropolitan. He was the 7th Catholicos of East.

Baselios Thomas I

Baselios Thomas I is a Syriac Orthodox Catholicos of India (Maphrian) and regional head of the Jacobite Syrian Christian Church, the Syriac Orthodox Church in India. He was enthroned on 26 July 2002 by Syriac Orthodox Patriarch Ignatius Zakka I Iwas, Patriarch of Antioch and All the East in a ceremony held in Damascus, Syria. The office of the Maphrian had been vacant from 1996 to 2002.

Jacobite Syrian Christian Church Oriental Orthodox Church based in Kerala

The Jacobite Syrian Christian Church (JSCC), also known as the Malankara Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church, the Jacobite Syrian Church, and the Syriac Orthodox Church in India, is an autonomous Oriental Orthodox church based in Kerala, India, and is an integral branch of the Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch. It recognizes the Syriac Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch and All the East as supreme head of the church. It functions as a largely autonomous unit within the church, under the authority of the Catholicos of India, Baselios Thomas I. It is currently the only church in Malankara that has a direct relationship with the Syriac Christians of Antioch, which has continued since the schism of 1665 and employs the West Syriac Liturgy of Saint James.

Mor Themotheos Thomas is the Metropolitan of Kottayam Diocese and Secretary to the Holy Episcopal Synod of the Jacobite Syrian Christian Church. Mor Themotheos Thomas was ordained as the Metropolitan of the Outside Kerala Diocese on 3 January 1991 by Mor Baselios Paulose II Catholicos of the East .

Baselios Paulose I or Murimattathil Bava was the first Catholicos of the East after its reinstatement in India. The First Catholicos of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church was in power only for seven months and eighteen days. He was 76 years old when he became the Catholiocs and died the following year.

The Catholicos of India, officially the Catholicos of the East and Metropolitan of Malankara based on the Syrian Orthodox Church Constitution, is an ecclesiastical office in the Syriac Orthodox Church, the head of the Jacobite Syrian Christian Church in Kerala, India. He is the Catholicos/ Maphrian of the Jacobite Syrian Christian Church an autonomous body with in the Syriac Orthodox Church, and functions at an ecclesiastical rank second only to the Syriac Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch. The jurisdiction of the Syriac Orthodox Catholicos of India and Indian diaspora based upon the regional (Indian) constitution of the church, Officially known as Catholicos of the East based on the Syrian Orthodox Church Constitution. The regional (Indian) constitution of the church renamed it as ‘Catholicos of India’ in accordance with its actual jurisdiction. The current Catholicos of the East and Metropolitan of Malankara is Catholicos Baselios Thomas I, who was consecrated in 2002.

Baselios Marthoma Mathews III Malankara Metropolitan (born 1949)

Baselios Marthoma Mathews III is the present Catholicos of the East and Malankara Metropolitan and the Metropolitan of the Diocese of Kandanad West and the Diocese of Idukki of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. He was enthroned as the 9th Catholicos of the Malankara Church and the 22nd Malankara Metropolitan on 15 October 2021 at Parumala Seminary, succeeding Baselios Marthoma Paulose II.

Idukki Diocese is a diocese of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. The diocese was formed in 1982 with the parishes in Idukki district in Kerala. The Idukki Diocese metropolitan's bishop house named Gathsemon Aramana is situated at Chakkupallam. H.H. Baselios Marthoma Mathews III, the present Catholicos of the East and Malankara Metropolitan is also serving as the Metropolitan of Idukki Diocese since 2019.

Angamali Diocese is the largest of the 12 dioceses of Syrian Orthodox Church in Kerala. Angamali Diocese was formed in the historic synod of Mulanthuruthy in 1876 and has been the major center of Jacobites through the ages. Metropolitan of the Diocese is HB Baselios Thomas I Catholicose.

Nilakal Orthodox Diocese

Nilakal Diocese is one of the 30 dioceses of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. The diocese was created on 15 August 2010. Now, H.G. Joshua Mar Nichodemos is the Metropoliton of the diocese.
