Kwame Nkrumah University (KNU) is a public university in Zambia. [1]
The university's main campus is in the central business district of the city of Kabwe, approximately 155 kilometres (96 mi) by road north of Lusaka, the capital and largest city in Zambia. [2] The geographical coordinates of Kwame Nkrumah University are:14°26'41.0"S, 28°28'02.0"E (Latitude:-14.444722; Longitude:28.467222). [3]
The institution was opened in 1967, as Kabwe Teachers Training College. It trained junior secondary school teachers at its inception. Four years later, the president of Zambia at the time, Kenneth Kaunda, renamed the college Nkrumah Teachers College, in honor of Kwame Nkrumah, the first Prime Minister and first President of Ghana. During the period when Levy Mwanawasa was president (2002 to 2008), the college began transforming into a university, a process that concluded while Michael Sata was in office (2011 to 2014). [1]
Kwame Nkrumah University was established by Part IV, Section 14 of the Higher Education Act No. 4 of 2013. At its inception, the university could only accommodate 600 students, a number that has since increased to 6,000. As of August 2016, it employed 74 full-time academic staff. At that time, the university was undergoing a major infrastructure expansion, including four student hostels; each capable of accommodating 600 students. Hua Jiang Investment Limited, a Chinese construction firm, is carrying out the construction works, on which the government of Zambia had spent in excess of ZMW:57,518,410 (approx. US$5.68 million). The university held its first graduation ceremony under its own university letterheads in August 2015. [4]
Nkrumah University has three campus locations. The main campus — Munkoyo Street Campus — is about 3 km from the Kabwe city center. Nkrumah University has recently acquired the PAID-ESA campus along the same street (Previously the Pan African Institute for Development - East/Southern Africa); this campus will help expand the capacity of the university. The newest campus is the West Campus. It lies immediately to the left of Main Campus. Kwame Nkrumah University has a new state of the art Library which is located at the west Library. The new campus also houses the new lecture theatre. Other infrastructure are still under construction within the same vicinity.

The University Senate runs the university under the supervision of the University Council. There are four schools namely; the school of Natural Science, the school of Business Studies, the school of Humanities and Social Sciences, and the school of Education. There are two institutes; Institute of Open and Distance Learning, and the Centre for Information and Communication Technology. [6]

Kabwe is the capital of the Zambian Central Province and the Kabwe District, with a population estimated at 202,914 at the 2010 census. Named Broken Hill until 1966, it was founded when lead and zinc deposits were discovered in 1902. Kabwe also has a claim to being the birthplace of Zambian politics as it was an important political centre during the colonial period.
Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) is a public university in Ghana that focuses on science and technology. It is popularly known in the country as "TECH". The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology is the first public university established in the country, as well as the largest university in the Kumasi Metropolis and in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. KNUST has its roots in the plans of Agyeman Prempeh I, a ruler of the Ashanti Kingdom, to establish a university in Kumasi as part of his drive towards modernization of his Ashanti kingdom. This plan never came to fruition due to the clash between British empire expansion and the desire of King Prempeh I to preserve his Ashanti kingdom's independence.
Lower education in Zambia is divided into three levels and these are namely: primary, junior secondary and upper secondary. Higher education in Zambia has improved in the recent years due to the increase of private universities and colleges. The biggest university is the public University of Zambia which is located in the capital city of Lusaka along the great east road and hosts a number of local and international students. The Copperbelt University is the second largest public university and is located in the Copperbelt province of Zambia in Kitwe, and the youngest public university is Mulungushi University, with its main campus 26 km north of Kabwe. The Central University is a Private university in Ghana, founded by the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC). It was founded as a pastoral training institute by Mensah Otabil in 1988. In June 1991, it was known as the Central Bible College. It later became the Central Christian College in 1993 and eventually became the Central University College in 1998. In 2016, Central University College attained the status of a fully-fledged University thus now Central University. The stated aims of the university is to provide an "integrated and biblically-based tertiary education with particular reference to the needs of the African continent". It is currently the biggest private university in Ghana.
The Presbyterian University, Ghana is a partially private & public university with multi- campuses and its headquarters located at Abetifi-Kwahu in the Eastern Region of Ghana. It is one of the new universities in Ghana granted accreditation by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission – GTEC. It was established by the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG) on 23 November 2003 and inaugurated on 27 March 2004 by the president of Ghana in that republic, John Agyekum Kufuor.
Wisconsin International University College, Ghana is one of the earliest established private universities in Ghana. It is located at Agbogba Junction near Kwabenya in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. It was established in January 2000 and is accredited by the National Accreditation Board as a university college and affiliated to the University of Ghana, University of Cape Coast, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and University for Development Studies.
Mulungushi University is one of the public universities of Zambia. Previously known as the National College of Management and Development Studies, it was turned into a university by the Zambian Government in a public-private partnership with Konkola Copper Mines in 2008. The university consists of three campuses: the Main Campus, or Great North Road Campus, located 26 kilometers North of Kabwe on the banks of the Mulungushi River; the Town Campus, located along Mubanga Road, off Munkoyo Street, near the center of Kabwe town; and the Livingstone Campus, located in Livingstone, which is home to the medical school. The university provides bachelor's degrees and master's degrees for full-time and distance education. In 2009, more than 500 distance education students enrolled. They were mainly former diploma students of the National College for Management and Development Studies.

Zambian Open University (ZAOU) is a private university, founded in 2002. It is one of the oldest private universities in Zambia. It is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities. The University boasts of a top academic record for its Law students in 2017 admitted to the bar followed by the University of Zambia. The University has a vibrant Students Union that addresses student needs in a more professional and mature manner though this is “CAP”. In 2018, the Students Union launched what is called the Student Revolving Fund to support vulnerable students.
Cavendish University Zambia (CUZ) is a private university located in Lusaka, Zambia. It was opened in 2004 and is the first private university to operate in Zambia. The university is registered with the Higher Education Authority which is a grant aided institution established under the Higher Education Act No. 4 of 2013. Cavendish is also affiliated with the Association of African Universities (AAU).
DMI–St. Eugene university is a multi-campus private university in Zambia, that is affiliated with the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Lusaka. The university is administered by the Daughters of Mary Immaculate.

Chreso University (CU) is a non-profit private higher-education institution located in the urban setting of the metropolis of Lusaka, Zambia. Established in 2010, this institution also has a branch campus in Ndola. Officially recognized by the Ministry of Higher Education of Zambia, Chreso University (CU) is a small coeducational Zambian higher education institution. Chreso University offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as pre-bachelor's degrees, bachelor's degrees, master's degrees, doctorate degrees in several areas of study. This institution has a selective admission policy based on students' past academic records. The admission rate range is 50-60% making this Zambian higher education organization a averagely selective institution. International applicants are eligible to apply for enrollment. CU also provides several academic and non-academic facilities and services to students including a library, housing, sports facilities, financial aids and/or scholarships, study abroad and exchange programs, online courses and distance learning opportunities, as well as administrative services.
