Biedermann attended the storming of the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021. [13] He refused to release emails from his official government account from the dates surrounding his trip to Washington, D.C. despite the email being in the public record per the Texas Public Information Act. [13]

Criticism

During the primary campaign, a photo surfaced of Biedermann dressed up as Gay Hitler, a recurring Saturday Night Live character portrayed by Chris Kattan, for a charity event in 2008. [14] He was criticized by the Anti-Defamation League. [15]

In January 2017, Biedermann sent a survey to Muslim leaders asking them questions about their interpretations of Islam in preparation for a "Homeland Security Summit". The surveys were distributed as part of a campaign designed to expose "radical Islamic terrorism in Texas", and preceded a forum Mr. Biedermann held at the State Capitol, scheduled to coincide with Texas Muslim Capitol Day, an educational event. [16] [17] [18] [19] The episode attracted critical media coverage and condemnation by civil rights advocates. [16] [20] [21]

A six-week abortion ban, also called a "fetal heartbeat bill" by proponents, is a law in the United States which makes abortion illegal as early as six weeks gestational age, which is when proponents falsely claim that a "fetal heartbeat" can be detected. Medical and reproductive health experts, including the American Medical Association and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, say that the reference to a fetal heartbeat is medically inaccurate and intentionally misleading because a conceptus is not called a fetus until eight weeks after fertilization, as well as that at four weeks after fertilization, the embryo has no heart, only a group of cells which will become a heart. Medical professionals advise that a true fetal heartbeat cannot be detected until around 17 to 20 weeks of gestation when the chambers of the heart have become sufficiently developed.
