The Spice Girls are an English girl group formed in 1994, consisting of Melanie Brown ; Melanie Chisholm ; Emma Bunton ; Geri Halliwell ; and Victoria Beckham. With their "girl power" mantra, they redefined the girl-group concept by targeting a young female fanbase. "2 Become 1" is an R&B-influenced pop ballad that features instrumentation from a guitar, an electronic keyboard and string instruments. The lyrics focus on the bonding of two lovers, and also address the importance of contraception. Its Big TV!-directed music video, which features the group performing against time-lapse footage of Times Square in New York City, was completely shot against a blue screen at a studio in London. The backdrop was later superimposed.

It was written by the band members, with additional writing by Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins, LaShawn Daniels, Fred Jerkins III and Harvey Mason Jr., while production was handled by Darkchild and Mason Jr. The track was released as a double A-side single with "Holler" on 23 October 2000 in the United Kingdom by Virgin Records, and served as the lead single from Forever. "Let Love Lead the Way" is an R&B ballad which lyrically finds the group singing words of encouragement for the future to a girl, which some critics believed was directed to Geri Halliwell, former member of the group. Group member Melanie C described the track's lyrics as being "just about love conquering all".

Music of the Sun is the debut studio album by Barbadian singer Rihanna. It was released on August 29, 2005, by Def Jam Recordings. Prior to signing with Def Jam, Rihanna was discovered by record producer Evan Rogers in Barbados, who helped Rihanna record demo tapes to send out to several record labels. Jay-Z, the former chief executive officer (CEO) and president of Def Jam, was given Rihanna's demo by Jay Brown, his A&R at Def Jam, and invited her to audition for the label after hearing the song that would become her first single, "Pon de Replay". She auditioned for Jay-Z and L.A. Reid, the former CEO and president of record label group The Island Def Jam Music Group, and was signed on the spot to prevent her from signing with another record label.

It received a physical release worldwide throughout November 2007, except for the United States where it received a limited release on 6 November 2007 through Victoria's Secret and a full release on 15 January 2008. It was their first album to be released in seven years and was supported by an accompanying world tour. The album sold 1.7 million copies by the end of 2007 and was the world's best selling girl group album of that year. In August 2012, after the Spice Girls' performance at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, the album re-charted in the top ten, twenty and thirty of most major charts worldwide including the United Kingdom, United States, New Zealand and Australia.
Jhené Aiko Efuru Chilombo is an American R&B singer-songwriter. Aiko embarked on her musical career in 2002, as a backing vocalist and music video performer for R&B group B2K. To promote and cultivate her own following, she was marketed by their record label, The Ultimate Group as a "cousin" of group member Lil' Fizz, despite them not being related. Her debut album, slated for a 2003 release through Epic Records, was ultimately shelved due to Aiko instead further pursuing her education.
Melanie Fiona Hallim is a Canadian singer and songwriter. She was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario. She began her career in 2002 as part of a Canadian R&B trio X-Quisite, of whom were nominated for a Juno Award for R&B/Soul Recording of the Year for their self-titled album (2004). She went on to form the duo The Renaissance with hometown native Drake, although they released no albums.

It was first released digitally in selected countries on June 2, 2008, by Def Jam Recordings and SRP Records. Launched to mark the first anniversary of the original album, Good Girl Gone Bad: Reloaded features three newly recorded songs and a DVD showing exclusive behind-the-scenes footage of Rihanna's worldwide tour, the Good Girl Gone Bad Tour (2007–2009). For the new material, she worked with past collaborators Ne-Yo, Stargate, and C. "Tricky" Stewart, as well as Brian Kennedy, Mark Endert, Mike Elizondo, Mark "Spike" Stent and Maroon 5.
X-Quisite was an R&B Canadian girl group. The trio made up of Nicole Holness, Melanie Fiona Hallim, Andreena Mill and later in 2003 new member, Nirvana Savoury was signed to Linus Entertainment soon after the group was established in 2002. The group released their self-titled debut studio album X-Quisite in 2003. In 2004, the album earned the group a Juno Award nomination for "R&B/Soul Recording of the Year". The group had a number of singles from their debut album, most notably "Bad Girl", "No Regrets" and "Sassy Thang". The group disbanded in 2005, with all three members moving on to pursue solo music careers.
