La Mare de Carteret High School is a high school on the island of Guernsey in the Channel Islands, located in the Castel parish. This school is expected to close in 2025 [1] and stop accepting year 7 pupils from September 2023, [2] with them going to Les Varendes High School instead.

Contents

In February 2016, the school received a validation report from Education Scotland, where it was rated as "very good" in all but one quality indicator. [3]

History

When the new academic year started in September 2009, the last remaining students of St. Peter Port Secondary school started Key Stage 4 at La Mare de Carteret High School. Joining them was the previous Head Master of St. Peter Port Secondary School, who assumed the role of the former Head Master of La Mare de Carteret High School, Phillip White.

In February 2012, Ken Wheeler retired from his position as headteacher. Geoff Cowley, who was initially brought in as School Improvement Adviser, became Interim Headmaster. In April 2012, the headteacher of the school was Vicky Godley.

Pathways

Students from La Mare de Carteret can choose to continue learning at the Guernsey College of Further Education or the Sixth Form Centre when they leave school. [4] [1]

Education in the Bailiwick of Guernsey is the combined education systems of Guernsey, Alderney and Sark. In Guernsey, it is overseen by the Education Section of the Committee for Education, Sport and Culture, part of the States of Guernsey. The States manage a number of island schools, including three comprehensive secondary schools and one grammar school, as well as the island's higher education facility, the Guernsey Institute. Liberation Day is the national day of both Guernsey and Jersey, the two largest of the Channel Islands, which takes place on 9 May each year.
